Biggest bust?: Tyson Stay-Puff

Charmin soft. He’s healthy. He can shoot.
But he’s slow and soft.

Crazy!
The issue i have is we have 3 POINT guards

Dylan
Jwill
Jmike

And we have two guys in aciff and Derkack that really are point guards on offense because they can’t operate from the wing …and need to be coming off high ball screens on top .

We don’t have a real 2 guard on the team …and it’s really hurting us on BOTH ends

General Thoughts: Roster Continuity, NIL Allocation

I'm not blaming anyone here, but I wanted to share some thoughts. And see what you all think on the topic.

For the last few off season’s there have been rumblings that players were given “a talk” about transferring so we can bring in other transfers through the portal (Simpson, Wolf, ETC). I don't think these guys would necessarily magically make us a top-tier team (nor am I making this about their stats at their new schools). But part of me feels like not having those three-year veterans who have been around this system for three years is a huge misjudgment from a continuity standpoint.

For football, Schiano’s strategy with a small NIL budget has been to focus on retaining players and making sure they are developed in his system. And that has led them to have veterans that understand the system and are able to pass it on.. I believe he refers to this strategy as “the pipeline”

Maybe this strategy dosent work in CBB? I know the roster turnover is crazy nationwide but it feels like everyone we play in conference has a staple guy or two whose name I've heard on broadcasts for years.
Keep me Grant, Lathan and Dortch!!!

Basketball GAMEDAY THREAD: Rutgers Basketball versus Maryland

It’s rare that one team’s best offensive player matches up against the other team’s worst defensive player.

Sommerville’s shadow would score on him.

To his credit, he did manage to score today despite having a no inch vertical.
He is a freshman bigs unless you are Queen who don’t grow on trees take time to develop… I just don’t get folks shitting on Somerville. Someone posted his fr pt average per game was in the ball park of Zack Eddy’s fr average per game. Have you even scored 12 points at the 5 in a rec game?

OT: Minor to Moderate Snow/Mix Likely Sat Evening (2/8) through Sun am

Was just reading a Post article about how good the skiing has been in NY this season. It was a little overdramatic, with feigned shock about East Coast powder existing at all, but sounds like one of the best seasons in quite a while.

Been awful in the Rockies. I was expecting it, so not a total gut punch, but still bad.

Glad somewhere is having a good one!
Sorry to hear that. My buds in our SLC office have not really been discussing skiing this year, so your comments kind of explain why.

Due to the very cold temps/stretches this year the snow making has been great in NY and VT. Areas like Gore and Whiteface ( as well as in Vermont) have been getting natural snow consistently. Not big storms but most of VT is over 100” on top of blowing most days. Even when we have received rain, it got very cold again to immediately blow snow. The conditions/grooming has been the best in years. Hell even at Hunter I have never seen the trails so perfect since the beginning of January. We really have been lucky this year

I am off to Stowe at the end of this month. Should be great. Always hit Killington/Okemo on the way back as well.

The EO injury was a bigger problem than most people thought. His presence today would have been valuable.
I said this earlier and I’ll say it again. The issue wasn’t the EO injury. The issue was EO and Martini being your starting 5 and 4 with Martini being the emergency center. Laughable miscalculation by coach. I think Pike has done a decent shop making some adjustments. But make no mistake, this roster was very poorly constructed.

RAPID REACTION - Maryland

1. One Queen is better than no Ace. Queen absolutely abused us in all facets of a game. For a post player, he is extremely skilled dribbling, driving, passing, and shooting. Kid just glides around and makes it look effortless. 29 points, 15 rebounds, 5 assists. Fifty scouts showed up to watch these freshmen, and Queen was the best player on the floor.

2. This was yet another example of “Rutgers can’t win unless both Ace and Dylan have good games.” Dylan had a “good” game — but didn’t hit an outside shot — while Ace was invisible because of the flu that seems to have impacted every team in the country.

3. The team showed fight in the second half, kudos to that. But you can’t win games only hitting 2 threes during the meat of the game, especially when the other team hits 10 threes.

4. In Ace’s absence, Dylan Grant really showed out with 19 points and 8 rebounds (6 offensive). Solid game from Sommerville too with 12 points and 9 rebounds, hitting several buckets to keep things close in the first half. But we just can’t win without Ace and Dylan scoring 35-40 points combined. They had 24 today.

5. Maryland plays really good defense, constantly putting on ball pressure and getting into passing lanes. They got 7 steals and caused a total of 13 turnovers. Every time we would cut into the lead, the Terps would get stops to keep us at arms length.

6. The game was basically played evenly, and the difference was Maryland hitting 10 threes to our 3 threes. That’s a 21-point difference.

7. Kevin Willard won the portal this year. Gillespie, Rice, and Miguel is a really good troika of guards who can ball and shoot. What a difference compared to Martini, Derkack, Acuff, and Hayes.

8. I would stack up Maryland’s starting five against any other team in the Big Ten, and the bench guys can all defend. Pike has to be green with envy with the roster Willard assembled, guys that can score and defend.

9. For what it’s worth, our foul shooting was really good again today, 26-31 for 84%.

10. I predicted a loss today, and the game went down about as I expected with a 9-point loss. But I can’t help but wonder if things might’ve been different had Ace Bailey been healthy. This season has been just a series of misfortunes, and our progress has been like fits and starts. So goddamn frustrating, thinking we were on the way back but then hit with yet another setback. The basketball gods are not Rutgers fans.

11. Our modified goal is still the same despite this loss. Win enough games to finish 9th to get a single bye in the BTT and then go on a magical run.
If ace was healthy we certainly may have won this game.

Pike 17 wins vs top 25

Sorry thought you were making excuses like some others.

Overall agree except I think you’re putting too much emphasis on ranking.

I’m not gonna look up the stats but I would bet tons of teams in the 40-60 range have beaten ranked teams.

So I wouldn’t say “you aren’t beating ranked teams” or discount this as a possibility (albeit on a low %).
Right I didn’t mean to say never. It’s rare which means it’s not really a meaningful metric.

Dylan Grant about to get PAID

He is the second best all-around player on the team after Dylan. Yes I said that
Not true. Bailey and Harper are the best players because they are the only players opponents fear.Grant played a terrific game but he needs to make open 3 point shots and so does Derkack.Harper had a very quiet 20 points.Maryland won because they had four players with high double figures. You don't score 90 points without making lots of 3 point shots while Rutgers shot bricks.Bailey illness in second half made it easier for the Maryland defense.

Stony Brook Game Thread

With a young team it’s not just about seeing the field. It’s also about prep. It’s a lot to take in.

No excuses for the loss. The best thing is they learn from it and apply that to another victory.

Actually I was thinking about not being fatigued from 3 games in 8 days. With a young team, I wonder if 4 lightning fast goals to open the game had an effect.
