Football Robb Smith set to return as Co-DC / Play Caller

Sorry that response regarding podcast was meant for spanky. Podcast said the staff was at max capacity and that there would need to be attrition or retitling to analyst by someone.

The numbers of coaches is unlimited now (previously 10 then 11).
You can still only have 11 coaches "recruiting off campus".

So they may have to swap in and out who is "off campus recruiting" at any given moment.

But the number of coaches is fine.
I'll start a separate thread but we now have:
defensive HC
6 defensive coaches (Co-DC, Co-DC/LB,DE, DL, CB, S)
only 5 offensive coaches (OC/QB, RB, OL, TE, WR).

Improving in years to come

Some of us have been sounding the alarm for a couple years. Some are just now starting to realize. Some are still in denial. Speaking to the first two, we all want to see RU back in the ncaas. But our program has a lot of flaws. We obviously can’t fix them overnight. Of the following what are your top 3 things, in order, to fix asap:
(These are in no order from me)
Plays out of timeouts
Player development
Player retention
Using the portal
Offensive sets and schemes
Changing the assistants
Accountability
Recruiting
Strength and conditioning
Scheduling
Player rotations
Tightening the rotation
Three point shooting
FT shooting
Getting a GM
Getting an AD
Getting a president
Fundraising
Other (if you choose this list a specific item)

Please let’s try to have a constructive, insult free discussion. Thanks.
1. New Head Coach

You provided 19 legitimate items that need to be addressed all of which have been a problem for multiple years.

If we are taking the time to list the top 5 of the 19 things that are wrong isn’t simply the head coach?

I agree with whay PSAL said: "Reading between the lines - we probably wanted Sparber as the linebackers coach. Sparber and Smith have the relationship from Duke and this arrangement was constructed. It allows Greg to roll the dice with an up and comer while retaining steady stability at the same time in bringing Rob back. I’m not why anyone should be upset."
I also think despite the firing Greg and Robb are friends and loyal to one another.
This gives Sparber a mentor as he learns the DC position at P-4 level and Smith can benefit from a good season this year when programs start hiring DCs for the 2026 season.
Seeing Smith spent the last 2 years as an analyst , he might not have been in demand as a DC and now
he might get back in the DC hunt if the RU D looks good in 2025

It seems like the guys on the podcast just had a vision for something else and are disappointed. It’s a major exaggeration to say that there was lots of noise calling for Smith to be fired here in 2021. The D started off pretty well that season until the OL was depleted to a point where we couldn’t compete at all. It was 3 and outs over and over again leaving the D out there all the time after that Michigan game. The podcast guys point to averages but outside of a handful of bad games the D was pretty good that season all things considered. I don’t know that he necessarily deserved a raise and a new contract at the time, but I also don’t think his performance was awful. Gleeson deserved to be canned when he was far more than Smith not being renewed.

OT: Wintry Mix Thursday (2/6) after 1 am: some snow/sleet through 6-8 am, then a bit of freezing rain (esp NW of 95) then rain likely until ~12 pm

I says 1 inch..with 1.3 for somerville..it also has a 10% chance of higher than 1 inch on probability maps

The sleet signal is strong
Learn to read the maps. The map color for most of CNJ denotes 1-2" of snow, therefore my statement in that post that up to 2" is possible for much of CNJ is reasonable: "All of these locations are forecast to get maybe an inch or so (up to 2" is possible for much of CNJ and everywhere N of 78) of snow/sleet late Wednesday evening through early Thursday..."

Also, they appear to have stopped using decimal places on their maps, so 1" is apparently 0.5-1.5", roughly, which combined with the 1-2" swath means places showing 1" could be 1"-1.5", which is exactly what we see if one looks at the point and click hourly graphic forecasts. As you said, Somerville is 1.3", Basking Ridge is 1.5", Edison is 1.2" and Hopewell is 1.1". As I said before in agreement with you, I think there will be more sleet than modeled and I'm not confident in places in CNJ reaching 2", but it is certainly possible.

In addition, below is a page from the NWS briefing, which proves my point that up to 2" is possible.

I just listened to the podcast. I don’t remember Smith being that bad when he was here in 2021. He started right after Covid. From ground zero. Maybe he didn’t do enough to warrant a raise per a new contract and he had an opportunity to go work for Elko. So he leaves. The podcast conveniently fails to mention the success Duke had while he was there. The team was better in 2022 than 2023. Maybe Elko is entirely responsible for the success and not Smith but if anything his performance would’ve been a neutral nothing at worst - not “bad”. The team went from 3-9 to 9-4. There’s nothing bad that could be said about that.

Greg is good at coaching D. He likes to be involved and isn’t one who can easily take a back seat when it comes to areas he is knowledgable. He’s not the kind of head coach a flashy hire everyone had in mind is a good fit with. Hafley could well have been plan A.
Yea again I have no issue with the hire. Kind of what I expected. Don’t understand why it took 2 months to get a retread and slap the retread with a co title. I wish him well. We know what to expect at least.

One Year Players

Those two losses would mean Rutgers at best would be a bubble NCAA team and more likely not selected.Rutgers didn't have great won/loss records with the players mentioned.
For sure. Between ‘19-‘20-‘22-‘23 Rutgers went 20-11, 15-11, 18-13 and 19-14. I would absolutely take that over 22-9, 17-9, 20-11 and 21-12 with a bunch of one-year guys.

The NCAA Tournament is the ultimate goal, but its also just one game. Watching the other 30 with a team I've grown attached to, hearing the RAC hum (I think there is a difference when the crowd resonates with the guys) and enjoying the development of four-year players is way more valuable to me.

Goes against what was said on the podcast. The coaching staff was at max capacity prior to Smiths hiring and that there would need to be attrition.

From the day Ace committed until the 2024-2025 portal opened pike had 400+ days to build the NIL war chest

Still clearly you can have success being a developmental program. Not just in the big ten. Obviously you need to be good.
If a developmental program doesn't work in the B1G, what type of programs should Rutgers run? A Coach Prime football program and a Jerry Tarkanian basketball program?

Would be entertaining. Rutgers would sell more tickets at higher prices. Not sure Schiano and Pike could run programs with the pizzazz of Prime and Tarkanian though.
