OT: Soccer journalist Grant Wahl dies covering World Cup

Noted soccer writer Grant Wahl died today after collapsing at the Argentina Netherlands game. This was a couple of days after he was detained by stadium security for wearing a rainbow shirt to a game. His brother feels there was foul play by the Qatari government.
I heard him talking about being detained and having his phone taken after taking a selfie while in custody. He was 48 years old.

The risk of not bringing in a portal qb is creating an apathetic hopeless fanbase

Id like to believe im one of the more patient optimistic fans of the football program but im starting to get close to the hopeless phase so I can only imagine others are feeling the same.

When you finish the final 5 games looking as you looked on offense and in particular at qb and then you take the position that everything is just fine and you dont need to change a thing, you really just totally lack any awareness of optics.

For the sake of selling tickets and bringing some hope to the fan base you HAVE TO bring in a transfer qb. Even if its just some guy like Tony Muskett from Monmouth and you simply let him compete for the job. The unknown is enough to give fans hope and optimism. Without hope, without optimism, all youre doing is creating an apathetic fan base who is going to stop caring and stop coming to games.

For the sake of selling hope to fans and more importantly recruits, you gotta shake things up. And if the fear is gavin will transfer because hes not willing to compete, then he never was the guy to begin with. You cannot risk another season of abysmal offensive production in year 4.

Fordham Head Coach, Joe Conlin Should be Named OC This Week

The more I dig, the more this guy seems like the no brainer home run hire.

- he has head coaching experience and can take total control of the offensive side of the ball
- he current makes $300K/yr, we can give him nearly a $1,000,000 raise per year with a 4 year/$5,000,000 contract
- he has run one of the most prolific offenses in college football history at fordham. This year they were the #1 offense in all of fcs football averaging 611 yards per game and 7.74 yards per play.
- his qb this year Tim Demorat threw for 4600 yards, 53TD/8 INT
- fordham played MAC 1st place team Ohio this year and lost 59-52 a game in which his offense threw for 503 yards 6TD and 0 INT. His offense put up 640 yards vs an opponent with superior talent.
- old friend trey sneed rushed for 1,000+ yards for Fordham this year and their #2 back had 854 yards on the ground as well

If this guy isnt at the very least offered the job I will have to seriously question all things schiano going forward. Lastly, this isnt the reason to get him but he does have 3 of the top wr’s in fcs all whom had 1,000+ yard years with one year of eligibility left on his roster he can bring with him as well.

OT: Fusion reaction generates more energy than put into the reaction (but still a long way to go)

Cool science nerd alert...

Scientists at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory's National Ignition Facility (part of the Dept. of Energy) have, for the first time, conducted a thermonuclear hydrogen fusion experiment in which the energy generated from a fusion reaction exceeded the energy put into the reaction, as per the two links below. This is a huge advance in hydrogen fusion science, something I've been following closely since doing a term paper on it as a senior in HS way back in 1980, lol, but we're still likely decades away from any practical use of fusion for producing clean (non-radioactive with no greenhouse gases produced, starting from simple seawater as the H2 source) energy at commercial scale for power plants for several reasons. Still, it's really impressive work and a huge milestone towards truly clean, unlimited energy someday.

https://www.sciencenews.org/.../nuclear-fusion...

So, let's get to the caveats. First, the large amount of energy required to create the large amount of energy put into the reaction is not "counted" in the comparison, so even more energy needs to be created by the fusion reaction at any commercial scale. Second, this reaction requires football field sized laser array to bombard the pellets of hydrogen "fuel" to heat them to millions of degrees F to initiate the fusion reaction, which is highly impractical for any commercial facility. And third, this fusion reaction lasted far less than one second, so obviously, scientists and engineers will need to find a way to sustain such fusion reactions in a controlled, safe manner to extract the energy liberated from the reactions in order to convert that energy (heat) for use in power plants, which could provide limitless clean power for all.

As an aside, for those curious, thermonuclear fusion mimicks the sun, where hydrogen atoms fuse together to form helium atoms, liberating incredible heat/light/energy, given that the mass of the helium products are slightly less than the mass of the hydrogen reactants, such that, as per Einstein's E=mc2, mass is being converted into energy - the one big difference is that the sun uses its immense gravity to drive fusion (which cannot be duplicated on Earth), while fusion experiments use immense amounts of energy to drive the fusion reaction (lasers in this case vs. other facilities, which use heat combined with magnetic capture of charged particles in tokamak reactors).

OT: former QB prospect to Transfer from LSU

people were high on him at one point here

LSU QB Lindsey Scott plans to transfer

After being named Gatorade Louisiana Football Player of the Year in 2015, many Tiger fans hoped Lindsey Scott could solve LSU’s issues at the quarterback position. After sitting out the 2016 season with a redshirt, Scott has decided against living up to those expectations heading into 2017.

Rated as a three-star recruit in the 2016 recruiting cycle, Scott saw the competition under center in Baton Rouge heat up last spring following the early enrollee of Lowell Narcisse and the fall addition of true freshman Myles Brennan. LSU coach Ed Orgeron has been very vocal regarding his praise of Brennan during fall camp, which suggests the freshman may have been moving up the depth chart in Baton Rouge.

Monday morning Scott announced his decision to transfer from LSU via Twitter:

Things we will see in the 2020s

1. Rutgers going 6-6? Yes..He better
2. Rutgers going 8-4? I think he can pull off one of these
3. Upset of PSU? I hope so.
4. Upset of Michigan? Would be great
5. Upset of Ohio State? Would be best Rutgers win since Louisville
6. Making it to the B10 championship game? Doubt it but if Schiano pulls this off even once that is a great accomplishment
7. Winning the B10 championship game? Doubt it but if Schiano did it, build a statue for him
8. Schiano coaching at RU for 8 years? I think he will
9. RU having a 1st round draft pick? Yes

Any others?

FB Recruiting Arizona transfer DL Paris Shand talks Rutgers visit

Some of you may remember the name as Paris Shand was one of the top recruits that Schiano was pushing for immediately after he returned to the banks in December 2019. Shand took official visits to both Arizona and Rutgers in late January right before the second signing period and chose the Wildcats in the end.

Now he's back on the market and Rutgers hosted him this past weekend. He was sitting front of the roped off part of the student section along with Marquise Watson, Greg Schiano and fellow Canada native Wesley Bailey.

So far Shand has earned offers from the likes of Ole Miss, Syracuse and Rutgers so far.
