The Midlands

The Midlands don't appear as competitive compared to past years. The best teams appear to be ASU, Northwestern, Pitt, Rutgers, Penn, Illinois, Princeton, Virginia, West Virginia, and Indiana. The bottom teams are Bloomsbury, F&M, Brown, Southern Illinois, Buffalo, George Mason, Central Michigan, Cleveland State, Northern Illinois, and Harvard. I wish the tournament was more competitive so the team can be really tested.

According to Wrestlestat our guys are projected as follows: 125 Peterson/Shaver 6th, 133 Heilmann 5th, 141 Sammy 2nd, 149 White 5th, 157 Clark 10th, 165 O'Neil 12th, 174 Turley 13th, 184 Soldano 1st, 197 Janzer 12th, Heavyweight Boone 7th

Clark, Turley, Janzer, and Boone should do better than projected.

Once the seeds are posted, let's project where each individual wrestler and the overall team will finish.

2023 Recruiting Class- There are only 2 possible answers

Yes I know its another thread on the recruiting class, because I am curious on where people stand in this issue. If you break it down to its simplest form, there are only two possible scenarios as to what we are looking at in regards to this class.

1)Schiano and staff did a terrible job recruiting. Now there could be a few reasons for this-never adding a stud recruiter when we lost Fran (I actually posted that the day he left), Schiano can't overcome our deficit in NIL, having a bad season on the field. Or it could be that he wasn't the recruiter that we thought. Either way the numbers speak for themselves-With the exception for the years that we changed coaches, this class is worse than any Flood class, any Ash class. Its a class that took this program a massive step backwards and as a result its lack of major B1G talent in this class could be the downfall of the Schiano regime.

2)Rivals did a piss poor job rating players this year. I am usually not a fan of how Rivals rates our players, but this year could be particularly bad. Players that have the measurables, and the offers, of high three and even four stars are low three stars or even two stars in this class. Its so bad its almost as if they did it on purpose they can't be that inept at rating players this year. And whats worse not a single player was readjusted as a result of their play in their senior season. If you believe that this class is even halfway decent then you believe that Rivals got everything wrong and should be questioned.

I actually believe its both. I do think that this class is not good, and I do believe that it is a result of losing Fran at a bad time. But I do think the class is close. It needed just one sure fire four star and it would have been a class that pushes us forward instead of taking a step back. But if its close, then it also means that Rivals stunk this year. We basically stole Wright he should be in the SEC his measurables are that good. Lott had a monster senior season that included shutting down a Rivals top 250 player thats going to Georgia. And if you believe in Lenny, Braithwaite is terribly low as well (although its hard to bump up a kid who lost their senior season, but I still think his speed dictates a mid to high three star). And Ian Strong? I am screen shooting the rating this year because I wouldn't put past Rivals to up Strong's rating later on when it doesn't matter once they hear word he's probably playing his freshman year-a two star good enough to play in their freshman year in the B1G is laughable. I think this class should have landed in the high 40's, maybe even #50 or #51. Not good, but close. You don't believe me? Compare this class to the 2019 class. According to Rivals 2019 is much much better.

So where to you stand? Is it Schiano thats bad or is it Rivals? I could be a little of both like I think, but it can't be neither.

Indiana tied with Kennesaw St at halftime

At assembly hall, the #18 Hoosiers are tied 27-27 with Kennesaw State. KSU led almost the entire half, and was up at one point by 7.

IU in fairness is missing Trace Jackson Davis, undisclosed injury, however they got Hood Schifino back their PG. Still, they are #18.

Would be a bad loss for the Big Ten and sadly RU. But it is somewhat enjoyable watching them struggle and seeing the Assembly Hall fans in agony

Xavier Johnson injury

Xavier Johnson, this board's "favorite" non-Rutgers basketball player, had foot surgery yesterday and will be out a long stretch. Indiana hopes he can return this season. Someone on the Indiana board said maybe February. I didn't want to see him injured, but if he is still out when we play at Indiana on February 7, that'd be a boost for our chances of winning there again.

This is the QB RU Should Get from the Portal- Will Be 30 years old in September

The one who told Ben Mauk to hold my prune juice!

He has NY connections. They type of player Greg likes- older, can mentor the younger QBs.

Bucknell game

Rutgers should beat Bucknell on Friday but it is nevertheless a game that needs to be taken seriously. They are 7-4 and have been competitive in every game, including a 4-point loss on the road at Georgia. What will hopefully help RU most is that Bucknell has to play a road game on Wednesday at Richmond and then head up to Jersey less than 48 hours later. Hopefully RU can wear them down in the 2nd half and win by a comfortable margin.

OT: Important Change to 529 plans - excess savings

Heads-up. The SECURE 2.0 act is part of the massive spending bill. It includes a new option for excess 529 money:

Section 126
Special rules for certain distributions from long-term qualified tuition programs to Roth IRAs. Section 126 amends the Internal Revenue Code to allow for tax and penalty free rollovers from 529 accounts to Roth IRAs, under certain conditions. Beneficiaries of 529 college savings accounts would be permitted to rollover up to $35,000 over the course of their lifetime from any 529 account in their name to their Roth IRA. These rollovers are also subject to Roth IRA annual contribution limits, and the 529 account must have been open for more than 15 years.

Families and students have concerns about leftover funds being trapped in 529 accounts unless they take a non-qualified withdrawal and assume a penalty. This has led to hesitating, delaying, or declining to fund 529s to levels needed to pay for the rising costs of education. Section 126 eliminates this concern by providing families and students with the option to avoid the penalty, resulting in families putting more into their 529 account. Families who sacrifice and save in 529 accounts should not be punished with tax and penalty years later if the beneficiary has found an alternative way to pay for their education. They should be able to retain their savings and begin their retirement account on a positive note. Section 126 is effective with respect to distributions after December 31, 2023.
