On December 13, 1890 at 8:00pm, Rutgers and UPenn kicked off in front of 3,500 at the rebuilt Madison Square Garden. Football was part of a weekend, mid-winter carnival-of-events program.

An event program had a listing of "Heisman" at tackle for UPenn. The future coach and namesake of the Heisman Trophy played center and tackle at Brown (1887-1889) and Pennsyvlania (1890-1891). The night before, Yale played the YMCA Training School with Amos Alonzo Stagg as its coach. One of his players (who scored a touchdown in the game) was James Naismith, about one year before he invented the sport of Basketball.
