Follow Jon Rothstein on twitter and you will see that 2020 teams are being announced this week for most tournaments. Once again looks like RU will not be participating in any of these feast week tournaments that are so good for scheduling. Disappointing considering our team next year will be mostly upperclassman, and I’m sure they’d like the travel. Guess we will stick with our garden state showcase and hope to win 12 Conference games for a possible tourney bid.

I was putting together a list of big ten teams in those, can't remember if I posted it or not. But yeah it's looking like just about everyone else will be in one but us.

Really frustrating that we are afraid to play good teams. Very disappointing. Next year might be the best team we’ve had or will have in a long time. These tournament teams are getting so much exposure right now too.
Playing good teams on the road is the stumbling block because its been so difficult to achieve a winning season at Rutgers..

ouch this really sucks and there is no excuse for it. It will be year 5 of Pike with upperclassmen and we need a schedule to build a tourney resume. Its very disheartening watching these tourneys around the country and seeing the ones in Brooklyn and NYC year after year after year after year with no RU...and no playing a Fordham at empty MSG in a one game Holiday festival does not cut it

Yup watching Penn State look better and improving playing quality teams and we are playing NJIT to clear a few grand yipee

Thanks. I am hoping for Jimmy V Tourney. We played there many years ago and Florida killed us if I recall

I ll be upset if we don’t play in a tourney next year. No excuse for us not to. . If so, Pike will have 1 similarity with Schiano in terms of OOC scheduling - though they may disagree on Hobbs..:)

do they still have the Rainbow Classic, the Cable Car Classic, the Sugar Bowl Classic or was it Orange Bowl, the Great Alaskan Shootout,

Rainbow Classic still exists but it's all low and mid majors. Ditto for the Cable Car Classic.

Orange Bowl Classic is a one-day thing like what we just played in Toronto.

The Great Alaska Shootout has sadly been retired.

Cayman Islands Classic field announced, no Big Ten teams.

Jimmy V next year. Gives us a chance to play at msg which we should do every year. This is my wishful hope.

Is this where "Fire Hobbs" is appropriate? :)

But, based on our less than great history, he probably figures we need cupcakes more than getting killed.

I know the great alaskan shootout ended after 2017. they could not get good teams to play in it. the last 7 winners of it murray state, charlotte, colorado state, central michigan, iona, middle tennessee, harvard

that’s actually kind of scary if true. We’re a huge state school in the B1G , in a populous state, in the largest market in the US and it seems like we’re a community college.
I clearly have no idea what minimum revenue number the RU MBB program must hit each season but it is plausible that giving up three home games could factor into things.

Football and MBB are typically the only revenue generating programs. RU football attendance is down so basketball might be shouldering a bigger burden.

I could be completely wrong but I do know some coaches who told me that they passed on tournaments in order to play more home games due to revenue or keeping season tix holders happy.

Because if you playing one of those tournaments you only have 8 non-conference games left. One is the B1G/ACC Challenge. If that or the Gavitt Game is a road game, now you're down to 7 possible home games.

Right now there are 4 Big 10 teams in the Top 15 and then Seton Hall is #16 and some of these teams we play twice. I think we need to finish above .500 and get to post season before we can start taking some risks. We have a very difficult conference schedule and we have not played well on the road. I know we all want to go to nice places to play. I'll be the first one there and even went to Toronto to see us lose to Bonnie. Be patient. Pikell is a smart guy. Winning brings better recruits and post season invites. It's been a looooong drought!

Updated my other post too. Louisville is in the MGM Main Event and Wake Forest is in the Jamaica Classic.

Maryland would be a good choice for the MGM as they're in a similar "weight class" (pun intended) as Louisville. (Arkansas is also there, but their coach is Eric Musselman who used to coach at Nevada so he probably had some connections to get in there)

Jamaica Classic would be a good spot for us.

I don't think these classics are really that attractive once you get outside of the Tristate area of MSG or Barclay center.

I don't know what the impact is to the seasons for this year so far but we are at Seton Hall next year and play MSU and MSG next year....who we host in the ACC will help.

What road game would be more attractive for fans.....at Duke....at Kentucky.....at Louisville.....at Syracuse....at Virginia.....at North Carolina State......at UNC.....??

These are 1 offs we can schedule that matter....or schedule Duke at MSG and call it a day....not a road game, big venue, tickets sold and no downside.

That is certainly a possibility given that we have the smallest arena in the Big 10.

At the same time, not giving up home games to play in a tournament is one more reason not to schedule Caldwell and to maybe get a Quad two opponent in a home-and-home instead. I'm guessing season tix holders are not too pleased with Caldwell being part of their package.

As expected, no Big Ten teams in Diamond Head 2020:

Arizona State (Pac-12), Hawaii (Big West), Oklahoma (Big 12), Saint Mary's (WCC), San Diego State (Mountain West), Seattle University (WAC), Temple (AAC) and Western Michigan (MAC)

for these tournaments do they look at a school's ability to bring fans?

Some of the locations will not attract many RU fans. Montreal may bring a few hundred as it is drive-able but Jamaica or Bahamas may bring just the player's families.

The Caribbean tournaments are usually put on by the government's tourism bureau or the resort itself. The goal of those tournaments is not to get fans there for the games (they play in a ballroom with temporary bleachers). Instead the idea is to have this product that people will watch on TV, and then they bombard the commercial breaks with "come to Atlantis!"

Update:

Paradise Jam is all mid-majors for 2020.

Las Vegas Invitational has DePaul, New Mexico, and Santa Clara committed with one spot left. This would be a decent spot for us but not sure about the organizers wanting a team from so far east. If I had to guess, I'd say a Pac-12 team fills this spot.

Jamaica Classic still only has Wake Forest announced.

The Montreal tournament that was announced has had basically no further details. We'll see if it even happens.

Rutgers, Maryland, and Iowa still are uncommitted from the Big Ten. I still believe the MGM Main Event is a logical spot for Maryland.
