2020 U23 and UWW Junior Nationals (11/13 - 11/15)

Poz gets the 2nd period tech to advance to the semifinals as well.

Kanniard and Turley both dropped their quarterfinal matchups.

Janzer gets the tech in the 2nd to advance in the consolation bracket.

Ugh, Sammy loses on criteria. This is exactly the reason why freestyle stinks IMO. Winner should be decided on the mat.

Poz beats Keckeisen to advance to the finals! He was up big, but seemed to be a bit gassed at the end up held on for the huge win. He will face Joel Shapiro (ISU) in the finals. What a stud.

Did he give up a 4 pointer? As far as tiebreakers go that one isn’t the worst. But last point is such a horrendous tie breaker rule. I get the idea behind it that you want the guy winning to continue to push the pace but the problem is if the two guys are tied, the guy who spent the match trailing is just going to sit back anyway. So many things wrong with freestyle.

They both had 4 pointers so it must have been last score, but I'm not 100% because the last sequence was reviewed and they gave Sammy the last points on the board but I'm not sure when they occurred. Other guy seemed to score last though. Either way that's exactly the point. Sammy was down early and battled back to tie it at 15 and to lose on criteria like that is dumb and deflating.

Sammy lost again but will wrestle for 5th. He got taken down and then rolled to death by giving up 10 straight points.

Edit: Looks like his opponent forfeit his last match, so Sammy finished 5th.

Is that really the tiebreaker for fs?? Just whoever last scores ? No overtime rounds or anything ? 0.0 lol..

It's all tiebreakers, not overtime. I believe the 1st tiebreaker is highest point move, but after that it's things like least number of cautions, who scores last, etc.. all dumb

Sammy made a mistake in the semis, he was handfighting and controlling center and had the lead on the tie-breaker-(13-13 and sammy had the last score). He for some reason decided to shoot with just under 20 seconds left it went 2-2-which was correct, but then Andonian scored last. Prior to this year he did not have much freestyle experience. No need for him to shoot at that time..Oh well he will learn.

Not worried about Sammy. He was wrestling guys much bigger than him and who competed at 149 & 157 last year. They also had freestyle experience. As long as he can make 133, he will do well. More concerned about Kanniard who was a Fargo Freestyle Champ. The season is early. But, he looked gassed at the end of his bouts.

It’s going to be so strange when Poz loses his first match, whether it’s today or in season because I’m not sure he’s lost a single match since he committed here. I could be wrong though.

You had to say it lol

Poz loses 4-2 in the finals and finishes 2nd. His opponent absolutely did not want to wrestle in the 2nd period, just sat back and tied him up all period. Oh well.

He looked awesome all weekend and we are definitely in for a treat for the next few years. He is a stud.

Overall I really liked how Shawver, Sammy, Poz and Janzer wrestled and also saw some nice things from Vulakh, Kanniard, O’Neill, Donner and Turley. Great thing is outside of Donner they are all young. I think Shawver has a shot to win 125 over Aguilar if Suriano does not go there.

Reviewing this weekend

Shawver - has potential for a true freshman -
Aguilar - disappointing for his 3rd year - has a lot of freestyle experience
Robinson - can't keep leads - continuation of last year
Alvarez - if he wrestles at 133 will AA - looked good considering limited freestyle experience and up 2 weight classes
Harrison - performed as expected -
Vulakh - fought hard considering 1st time on the mat in over a year. let's wait and see
Van Brill - remains a question mark - was it the weight cut - as he is not enrolled this semester can he practice with the team?
O'Neil - A year as a red shirt should serve him well -
Kanniard - clearly has potential - hope it is more than potential - gets off to good starts and fades - has plenty of freestyle experience - is he in shape?
Donner - performed above his talent level - Beat ACC Champ - Needs to finish takedowns- could be starter until Kinniard performs at his potential
Turley - with redshirt year could be future starter - unique style
Pozanski - the real deal - future AA
Janzer - performed well up an weight - a fighter
Esposito - continues to improve - hopefully a reliable backup
McDermott - didn't live up to his billing - willing to be patient - it is first year in D 1 and don't know his freestyle experience

Pritzlaff and Leonardis are involved in the matches and walk with and talk to kids after bouts if they win or lose - Does Leonardis get credit for Janzer's development?

Shawver, Alvarez Pozanski, and Janzer impressed - like future future AAs chances
O'Neil, Turkey, and Donner did better than I expected
Kanniard and Aguilar did not do as well as I thought they would
Need to see more of Vulakh and McDermott before assessing
Van Brill and Donner may be starters when season begins at 157 and 165 unless younger guys demonstrate they can do the job
Robinson, Harrison, and Esposito can be good contributors in the room

With Suriano and Rivera in the lineup we should have a very good season. Hope is four All Americans

Vanbrill will pick it up later. He has the grit and works hard.
Poz continues to impress and his potential is on an upward swing.
