I know of DeJesus and O’Keefe for sure, but we stopped recruiting O’Keefe once Knox committed to Cornell.

I haven't followed high school closely since my boys were there in the late '90s. Lots seems to have changed since I started following >55 years ago. The perennial powers have shifted. What has happened to South Plainfield and Bound Brook? In the old Region 5, the powers were Hunterdon Central, North Hunterdon, Voorhees, Del Valley, East Brunswick, and JP Stevens, just from those I remember. Phillipsburg was always at or near the top. JP Stevens dropped off long ago after Loysen retired and with demographic changes. Others, I don't even see represented in the team scores. I suppose it's just me lamenting the changes since my days.

North hunterdon beat P Burg for the group 4 title and beat a few other very good squads and was ranked in the state , Delaware Valley destroyed all of group 1 on their way to another title , no team even scored double digits against them til the group final, pburg had a state finalist, another placer , 1 R12 finisher and 3 other qualifers they are still a force , hunterdon central had the worst season in school history after graduating a lot of talent but they still had a state medalist who returns so I wouldn’t expect them to be down for long , East Brunswick and Vorhees fell off from a team standpoint a long time ago but vorhees has produced 2 state champs that went on to be solid D1 wrestlers in that past decade or so…a lot of central jersey guys on this board could explain the reason for the South Plainfield and bound Brook fall offs

North hunterdon beat P Burg for the group 4 title and beat a few other very good squads and was ranked in the state , Delaware Valley destroyed all of group 1 on their way to another title , no team even scored double digits against them til the group final, pburg had a state finalist, another placer , 1 R12 finisher and 3 other qualifers they are still a force , hunterdon central had the worst season in school history after graduating a lot of talent but they still had a state medalist who returns so I wouldn’t expect them to be down for long , East Brunswick and Vorhees fell off from a team standpoint a long time ago but vorhees has produced 2 state champs that went on to be solid D1 wrestlers in that past decade or so…a lot of central jersey guys on this board could explain the reason for the South Plainfield and bound Brook fall offs

Bound Brook is a choice school and takes kids from out of district (for instance, Glasgow was from East Brunswick). Their decline is because they're not attractive anymore with so many better private and public school options, and zero NJSIAA enforcement on recruiting.

The coaches that made that destination so attractive all left. They worked their asses off. They had a whole training program from Rec to Middle School to High School all aligned, all teaching the same techniques. So, by time high school hit they were doing the moves for 5 or 6 yrs.

They also brought in college wrestlers to train with the kids as they had an open door policy for guys to come in and work out. The new coaching staff doesn't do any of these things, it's strictly a 4-6 practice time then they're off the clock.

Only realistic option I’ve heard to stop it would be add a region 9 with all privates and only let top 4 go to states that way you’d still have the delbartons and st joes but it would atleast cut down on the smaller privates , if it’s that much harder to make it to states why not just stay home instead of going to a red bank catholic or DePaul

You can’t take the privates out of the state tournament without severely damaging it but you can make the private region so teams like delbarton doesn’t qualify the entire team, they had 14 qualifiers and that’s with Damian Logan kid who took 4th as a freshman last year and Connor glory pats brother riding the bench…just insane

I completely agree with your first statement. Everyone should want to the best 32 wrestlers in each bracket in Atlantic City. Any system that tries to make it "easier" to get to AC is dumb and goes against getting what you earn. Just take a look at the NJ "kids" state results when these Seniors, Juniors and Sophs were in grade school...it is mostly the same kids placing back then as well. The top kids wrestle year round, get great coaching from all the great clubs in NJ. They are traveling on tournament teams etc etc, as youth wrestlers. Then at clubs in 7th and 8th grade they want to be practice partners or be on a team with multiple like minded wrestlers so they end up going to the same private schools with their buddies. This will not change. And NJ is not unique, take a look at other states and their are a handful of schools dominating wrestling in most states. California has 900 schools in their state tournament( 7 schools had 50% of the medals).
If the Privates are ever pulled out of the "individual" state tournament, it will start another round of it is not fair and a Group 1 school will say "hey it is not fair" that we have to compete with a Group 5 school and soon we will have 6 state champs like 20 other lame states. When teams like Delsea, Southern, Paulsboro, Howell, Brick Memorial etc dominate a District with kids that are "choice students" or wrestlers that are living with families of other wrestlers etc, nobody says a word. It has been going on since the 80's Highland teams and the Absegami power teams for over 40 years.

I do like the idea of a potential "butterfly effect" of pooling parochials together and having kids who normally attend them, stay at their local publics instead. Agreed that the top 32 wrestlers in the state should go to AC. But if the top 5-6 are at parochials and you're #5 or #6, you may think twice about going the parochial route and qualify for AC at your local public instead.

My 2 issues are:

Private (and public) schools that illegally recruit and often poach kids from other public programs

Private schools building super teams and winning every district and region title, which is unfair to the teams in the 8 districts they get placed in and kills the energy and excitement in the entire building. If the sport wants to grow, you have to provide a competitive balance of some kind.

A start to a solution is to enforce recruiting rules and stop this transfer nonsense. The SJM model is not good for the sport. Harris should not have been able to transfer in senior year just so they could beat Delbarton. Similarly, rumor is that Dellagatta was taking a bunch of online classes at SJV and not there in class everyday since it’s a hike from where he lives. Senior/junior transfers should not be eligible for team states. At what point does the NJSIAA say enough is enough? And it’s only going to get worse because schools like SJM and SJV are already actively “shopping” public and private schools since they are graduating so many kids. Half of Bosco’s line up will likely be at SJM next year not to mention a few PA kids, a CT kid, and a few public school kids that are apparently in play. I wouldn’t be surprised if SJM repeats with transfers securing that line-up.

Top 32 is the goal regardless of private or public. The biggest issue this year is the regions were completely imbalanced. You had one region (3?) with 5 of the top 20 teams including Delby, PJ, Cranford, Caldwell, and HP which kept a lot of solid wrestlers out of AC. Then there were other regions that were a total joke.

Does it matter who’s in your district or region? You have to beat the guy if you want to be a state champ so why does it matter when you wrestle him? NJ went away from super regions to get more kids to AC then allowed the top 4 kids in each region to advance. How much more does the NJSIAA have to water down the state tournament before the complaining about the parochials stops?

In terms of the parochials , none of these kids are being coached in the room in any meaningful way. They all go to clubs and their club coaches are the ones who are drilling techniques and styles. A public kid can get the same level of coaching as a parochial kid.

Finally, if you want to be upset about something, be upset about the fact that every state champ except Jaden James will be a reclass. Harvey Ludington will be 20 years old in October. I didn’t turn 20 till I was a junior in college. The reclassing is out of control and the reclassing advantage is more acute if you send your kid to a public.

I’m sure LaValle and Ludington wrestled 14 year olds this season in their public school league. These guys are 19 going on 20 wrestling 14 or 15 year olds. This reclassing crap will kill the sport just as fast as the dominant parochials.

For perspective Ludington wrestling a HS freshman is akin to him wrestling a 7th year college senior. It’s insane!

Oh, I'm not saying they didn't recruit from the surrounding towns, they absolutely did. But there were many kids from inside that town that placed in states and won it. Was there not enough in town, sure, those 3 or 4 kids from out of town each year in 14 weight classes made a difference in pushing them from good to elite. You act like their entire program was all from out of town or out of state kids when that's not the case. It was not a public turned parochial. Also, those coaches set them up with those club coaches pushing them towards them. Again, the coaches did a lot for those kids outside of the 4-6 practice time. Although they couldn't coach them, they arranged everything for them.

Oh and it's going to happen rather quickly, the new king fish in Central Jersey is going to be Immaculata and they're not just going there for Rodney Van Ness.

This is a tough issue to solve when middle school kids want to wrestle at certain privates. But it’s much easier to put stringent transfer rules in place to at least stop privates from gaming the system and poaching public/private school kids just to fill a hole in the line-up. SJM needed a 215 so they grabbed a senior Harris from SPP to win a state team title. Look at some of the kids BC grabbed including the Junior stud from Wayne Hills. This is just the beginning.

They were not part of the NJSIAA back in the 70's. I think the first year they were allowed to compete (at least in track/XC) was around 79 or 80

I won’t cry for Don Bosco though ,they poached a quarter of their line up from Hanover park , Deluca 2nd , Rodriquez 3rd and Monticello who was region champ as a freshman all from a Hanover park team that made the group finals and arguably had a better season then Don Bosco even without those guys , imagine if that team stayed together with Lavalle and the other qualifers they would have been a top 10 team easy ,instead they go to Bosco and lose in quarters of sectionals

Many area students and families find the academics and culture appealing to them. $$$$
