I know Richie doesn't think JMike is going to see many minutes, but he sure looks like a leader out there capable of giving the team something.
Context matters - Harper isn't playing.
Assuming either Harper or JWill are on the floor at all times, not sure whst that something would be JMike would provide.
Alternatively, assuming nobody has a spot already "guaranteed", these brief videos seems to imply are we sure JWill should be ahead of JMike?
Amazing what moving the ball looks like when there's no one required to clog up the paint area and the bigs can set screens on the perimeter and make passes (Dortch, Martini, Grant, Sommerville).

In no way am I saying that JMike is getting minutes ahead of Harper and JWill. But it sure looks like he’s not going to be afraid to fight and earn more minutes than were slotting him.
Just remember, this is series of short clips, the clips chosen by the RU Basketball program, to release. Meaning? I am not sure, but the program chose these 3+ minutes of clips to piece together.
They elected to show:
1) A lot of Jer. Davis clips.
2) Bailey passing.
3) Ogbole running the floor.
4) Wing and corner 3's by Martini, Hayes, Derkack and Williams.
Note at the 2:27 mark, if you pause perfectly, you will see Williams, Dortch (#8) and Grant (#9) frozen standing together. Dortch looks to be 5" to 6" taller than Williams, and 2" taller than Grant.

Average of 65-70 possessions, I could easily see Dyl 35-40%, JWill 35-40%, JMike 30-20% running plays next year.
Cliff on many possessions was out of the paint setting high screens.
The reality is injuries happen. In addition they are going to be very careful with Harper coming off injuries. I would not expect Bailey or Harper to play through most injuries.
Looks like they are working on a motion offense in half court sets and taped ball movement.

It certainly does. Let me add even more context: It's summer. It's practice. It's not even the whole practice. It's short clips. Those clips are selected. They're selected by the program. Hardly anyone misses. Etc.

Sure, I like clips and highlights. And I don't like some of the comments that come with them.
But, if you're claiming that I'm a broken record about those comments, then you and/or others just might be a broken record with those comments.

Its all a conspiracy to show overly positive practice and mask poor play in order to try and boost attendance and sell more tickets to the RAC this coming season. Oh wait....
Defense? Are they playing defense this coming season? Or do they take "defense vacation" over the summer?
Also.. I suspect the practice facility is well air-conditioned with low humidity.. but if they move to the RAC for "fun".. I'd monitor the humidity in there before allowing them to play.. stick floors.. like at Werblin (always sticky because of the pool) in warmer months.

You act like you don't know what it means to be a fan of any sport.
The off-season for all sports, college or professional is the time when all diehard fans are looking for signs to be encouraged about or see anything to get excited about the next season. So when we see guys making shots we are happy and hope it is a precursor for things to come.
But, here you come, every summer, telling everyone that guys making shots in summer practice does not mean they will make them in games...Well, no shit Sherlock.
Nonsense. It's fairly simply to follow the team, watch videos like these, enjoy them, and not conclude and announce silly things.

The most encouraging thing in the clip is the transition pass from Davis. A possible sign of his maturity away from driving as fast as he can with his head down hoping to get fouled. Hard to take much else away.

Hard to tell much generally. Even the best defensive teams have some D breakdowns. Breakdowns produce highlight reels like this.
Isn’t he number 23? I went back and played it twice. I barely see Hayes on D period in the video. I’m not saying I expect you to be wrong (I have low expectations for his D) but this video didn’t show me anything about his D either way.
Somerville does not look good on D. I don’t want to take anything away from Davis, he’s looking quick and confident, however, breaking one perimeter defender was never an issue for him - he struggled most with getting blocked by a bigger help defender at the rim. See the play at the 22 second mark (as an example). Somerville misses the assignment entirely with his back to the ball. It’s not even late help - there’s no help.
That is what I was implying more than the players cannot play D or that the staff is okay with watching little D.
But, if there were few D highlights, it could simply be that a lot of new faces have to learn the D responsibilities of Pike's D.. which is very much a group effort kind of thing.
Another context element to keep in mind is that JMike is the ONLY player on our entire roster that has faced a full slate of B1G opponents.
The kid is battle-tested and now is showing marked improvement in practice.
He’s earned and will get decent minutes (10-12 imo, which is still only half of what he got as a freshman).
What types of defensive highlights are you thinking would typically be featured in a 3 minute highlight reel like this, that are absent? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a highlights clip that features a defender forcing an off balanced missed shot, for example. A block was included - again how many blocks would you typically see featured in a short highlights clip. They are usually offense focused. Perhaps a steal might be included on a highlight reel, but typically only when points are converted on the other end. We’re also a strong ball handling group in general so you wouldn’t expect that many pick pockets.
Oddly - seeing that play left me more hopeful than concerned about Hayes. Having watched a bunch of his film from last year, I observed that while he is not a good defender, his frontcourt teammates were among the worst I’ve ever seen at the D1 level on bail out. Help defense seemed nonexistent.
He needs to be a willing defender to see the floor for Pike. More than anything, he needs to hustle on the perimeter and getting a hand up in time to prevent easy looks from the outside. He’s going to get beat in one on one (certainly that’s a given in a mismatch where he’s defending a quicker guard). It’s great to see Ogbole right there on rim protection.
C'mon, every offensive highlight looked like a cakewalk vs Ol'e defense. Surely there was defense.. more than just that block. No big deal. Was just noticeable as others have agreed. Not making any critical comment of the team.. or the editing.. just mentioning something rather obvious, I thought.
Do you really lack the required imagination of what would look like good defense?
If you combine Derkack’s defense and dribble drive game with the deep shooting prowess of Hayes you might have an NBA player…and I’m being totally serious.
Your not answering my question. The clip you reference of Caleb is not a highlight clip of a game or scrimmage. No highlight clip is going to feature a bunch of off balance shots forced by a good defender. You might have a block or two sprinkled in on ESPN highlights - sure. But for the most part offensive plays are the focus in highlight videos.
I couldn’t get a sense of what Derkack’s man to man D will be like from the highlight video. Not enough data. Being good at zone D is very different from being a good man to man defender.
There’s clips of him him playing good D. In other videos he was guarding Ace well.
There wasn’t enough repetitive film to assess his ability to play in a man system. Being a good on ball defender usually means your lateral movement is above average which is certainly a start. But seeing man and ball in man to man schemes is vastly different from playing zone defense where you are responsible for a designated coverage area. You see the struggle with transitioning clear as day in the young AAU circuits and it’s likely why many programs are against playing zone early because some kids never fully adjust to the switch. To be clear, I’m not saying Derkack won’t adjust. To reasonably assess where he’s at with the transition, we’d need to see watch raw scrimmage footage from 10-15 minutes of action - not a handful of highlight plays.
