Tremendous game, obviously. But let's not lose sight of the fact we'd lost 4 straight coming into that game and then proceeded to lose the next 4 right after the Villanova win.

Now, there's no disputing that 2010-11 team is like the 1990 UNLV team as far as being competitive compared to what we have going on now, but the reality if that game was really a 1-off type of deal.

Those 4 losses before 'Nova game were mostly close except for game @Cincy, and then RU lost in OT to Syracuse on the road after that 'Nova win. We beat SHU twice that year including smacking them in BE Tourney when the SHU heads came to MSG with "11th Commandment: Thou shall not lose to Rutgers..." towels. It was great. We also were robbed in the next BET game against SJU.

Rice then landed a Top 20 recruiting class...geez we seemed so close to really, really turning the corner then...

Smacking SHU in the BE Tourney?. It was an overtime win. I should know because it ruined my afternoon at MSG. LOL

I do agree that RU was robbed against SJU which led to the removal of the two refs for the remainder of the Tournament.

Remember how much positive press Rice got out of that SJU outcome for taking it so well? Wow, did that change in a hurry.

Rice had buzz similar to Chris Mullin. The 2011 class, whether a bust or not, was like Mullin's 2015/16 recruiting classes although not as good. And I'm going out on a limb that Rice is better than Mullin

I like Mullin but as coach he's just a figurehead. Slice and Abdelmassih with the help of boosters are all of a sudden recruiting everybody and anybody. That's what it's all about.

It's Queens not Manhattan! Slice and Matt A wouldn't have come without Mullin. Lets see if he can just get out of the way and let the young assistant do the coaching. Haha.

Rice had the energy and toughness instilled in his teams that you need in college. Laid back guys like Jordan and Mullin with nba backgrounds are only as good as the talent, and it needs to be four stars and up for those types

Hoops, why did you suppose Rice lost his recruiting mojo after the 2011 class? He cleaned up that year with Carter, Mack, Jack and Seagars.

smacking<smack down<beat down<creamed

Beating shu in BET with those "11th Commandment" towels is a just smacking in my book.
SHU has beat down and creamed RU the last 2 years[sick]

Good question Batts. I know I read that he was very close to signing some kids that ended up at Cuse and Nova.

Even though they only won 5 or 6 conference games that year, there was always the hope that on any given night RU could compete w/ anyone, and it's amazing the impact that has on a fan base. Just look at the crowd at the RAC that day compared to games now.

I've shown the one video shot from the student section (with the guy shouting 'and the foul!) to a friend of mine who is a senior at RU and never been to a basketball game... I told her that that was what it used to be like at games.

I do think we can get back to that one day... it's amazing what entertaining basketball and just the hope that you can win will do for a fan base.

Rice never even got to a .500 record but the excitement and enthusiasm at each game was light years better than this crap now.

This was possibly the best two minute stretch in RU basketball history.

St.John's game, refs wanted to get to happy Hour I guess. What a disgrace. Was at Remley game and that was a great game.

Was at the game, watched the replay probably ten times the next day and ten since then. When it gets to the 8 sec mark and we're down by 5 I still don't believe we're gonna win. How about the student section? How about the hug between Pernetti and Rice? Sadly five years later Villanova is #1 one and we're at the bottom. How could 2 programs diverge so much? Where do you think we'd be if the "incident" hadn't happened and Rice continued to coach?

I think we would be an overall .500 team or better!

As bad as the refs were in walking off the court with time still left, 3 missed blatant foul calls on SJU were worse: 1) Mitchell getting pushed on a rebound, 2) Coburn's drive to the hoop and 3) Biruta being held and knocked down on that long inbound pass to midcourt. Rice was going nuts at the mugging of Biruta. It was indeed the worst reffed 7 seconds ever!
