An interesting re-tweet from Corey Sanders

Not necessarily, (i.e. "Retweets are not endorsements") but in this case it does feel that way.

Why would you retweet something you didn't endorse or agree with, unless you specifically added a comment that disavowed or showed your disapproval of the original tweet? I'm not judging Corey here or in my original post, just commenting about twitter protocol.

it could be someone associated with Vetrone or so yahoo here hellbent on keeping him

no coach needs to be kept for one player, if Corey feels he must follow Shoes than thats his choice, no player is stronger than the program and certainly Shoes Vetrone has not done anything miraculous to be considered a savior here

Per twitter, Van macon, cory mcmullen are gone.

You guys want to build a winner, well then you better learn to play the game. In recruiting its all about ties

Yup. Fans can't sit on their high horse then complain about recruiting/results. If you want the basketball fortunes to improve you can't set standards other schools don't have to live by.

I'd keep him to keep Corey. Worst case fire him next year when it's tougher to leave due to eligibility or after he experiences a year with the new regime.

If Corey isn't on this team I know I won't be watching next year.

Basketball is a stars game. Keep him happy and everything will be fine.

(Edit) In any case I think he's just doing what he can and standing up for his guy. You always look out for your own. When push comes to shove, then you lookout for your own best interest. He's under no pressure right now, so why not lookout for Shoes interest.

Worked with Seagears....

Give Corey what he wants. I'm tired of Rutgers trying to put kids in their place. Every other program makes concessions to Elite recruits, why can't Rutgers.

This is not about putting Corey "in his place" - it will be about doing what is right - Pikiell will do what is in the best interest of the program - and staffing decisions will be the product of a thorough assessment of many factors - and the process will not - and should not - be short circuited & default to simply be the satisfaction of the wants of an 18-19 year old player

If so, why would Sanders re-tweet it? Makes zero sense. This will very likely not end well.

Would Sanders be willing to drop down a level to play right away, would he be willing to sit for a year or leave to go overseas and hope for a good payday.
I think Corey has no plans on leaving even if Shoes isn't retained, only trying to keep Vetrone on the staff by backing him anyway he can

Sanders plan is to only play 2 years at RU. What happens after next year? If recruiting is dull do we still keep Shoes? Anyway.... what's up with all that cash Corey is flaunting in his twitter?

I think we could all live without these subtle threats. I mean, what the hell has Greg frickin' Vetrone ever accomplished that Corey is so attached to him?

You better figure out something.

This is what it takes at certain levels of competition for players at this quality level......Seton Hall hired Whitehead's HS/AAU coach.....was it against the rules....??? No, but it got the desired results after Year 2....so are we going to ignore this and ignore what every other program does to get players at this level??

So are we saying we shouldn't look at hiring the best potential assistant coach candidates that are connected to the highest number of quality local players that would consider playing for RU?? I keep seeing we need a "recruiting shark" and then suddenly when the player potentially or indirectly prefers or wants a coach or "shark" that he likes or is familiar with to stick around, we want to jump all over the player. Should Sanders retweet it....probably not, but I'd rather have the player do that, vs. trying to guess where he stands on the topic and getting blindsided at the 11th hour.

The one thing that I feel is necessary as a fan base here is to adjust the mindset if you are serious about winning.....fans in recent days are not liking my posts because it's somehow not what they want to hear or see or read, but I also would not over think things. OR we can't have it both ways....we are either going to like every other program with two feet in the water, or we continue to languish behind the rest of the Power 5 conferences and others....

We hired a football trainer with 100% intentions that he would help RU in football recruiting for classes in 2016 and beyond....he was never a coach, but someone connected to specific recruits....Then Michigan goes and hires the same potential HS coach we considered hiring, because the perception (whether real or imagined), is that the coach would help land kids for that school.

Do you want to continue to finish in the bottom quarter or half of the conference in both sports or are we going to go with the flow of what college athletics has become. I am not judging or stating that fans should feel "put-off" by the tweet, but Sanders seems like an engaging personality and even with enough swagger to overcome whatever happens.....but if you prefer to win faster, you do so with Sanders here, vs thinking you are going to land the next Sanders by hiring his AAU coach or an assistant that has an "in" on the next big-time talent.

this is spot on

Guys, he could have been referencing the fact that if there wasn't a Shoes, there wouldn't have been a Sanders at RU; as in this is an endorsement and not a threat. I think Corey has waited a full year for the opportunity to play with Johnson, I don't think he'll bail at this moment. This team is extremely close, I hope they all decide to stay around for each other and see what they can accomplish with better coaching and preparation.

Teams hire AAU coaches, friends, uncles, etc. to the staff to land a recruit ALL THE TIME. So why in the world wouldn't a new coach keep at least one guy from the previous staff if that keeps the teams best player (BY FAR) on the squad and happy?!

This program needs to keep Sanders on board. He's a real legit talent and star. He's going to be even better when he has players around him developing.

A bunch of cry babies on this board.

The lack of talent for decades has caused the mens basketball program to reach the absolute bottom in perception and relevance.Players comparable to Sanders in talent have transferred from Rutgers because they wanted to play for a team that would play in the NCAA Tournament.Sanders is testing the new head coach by trying to influence his decision on assistant coaches which I don't like.At the same Sanders leaving would almost ensure another season with 10 or less wins.A very difficult dilemma for the new Rutgers head coach as he starts his tenure.

Original tweet, or re-tweet, the message is the same and it just made things VERY clear IMHO. If I'm Coach Pikiell and hear about this I sit the young man down, TODAY, and have a very, very long talk with him (even if he has already done so...). Very, very disappointed in Corey at this moment. SMH.
Agreed --- Either the kids buys in and falls in line or takes his act elsewhere. At this point starting from scratch is perfectly fine even if next year is 5-25. We've waited 25 years. Another year is meaningless if things get build the right way like Schiano had done with football.

Yes you will

Sanders is an immature kid. There is a reason he attended so many high schools and was suspended at RU. My guess is that Pikiell sits down with him and has a discussion about expectations and who runs the program. It need not be threatening - simply a firm statement of Sanders' role. If Pikiell determines Vetrone adds value to the program and should stay irrespective of Sanders he will make that decision. But Sanders will need to understand that the coaches are in charge and that there is a professional way to handle situations. To allow Sanders to think he has any influence would be a huge mistake and will likely result in further immature and destructive conduct. Moreover, other kids could believe they can also act up.

Pikiell comes from a program where Calhoun tossed talented players off the team - even before UConn became a powerhouse. I suspect Pikiell will handle this the correct way.

For those that think putting up with this type of conduct is par for the course in order to achieve success, I disagree. It is certainly true that kids are frequently given a bit of rope everywhere. I am not suggesting Sanders be tossed due to an immature tweet. But he needs to understand that if he continues behavior that undercuts the staff or the program things will not end well for him. Mullin recently did it at St. John's with his two best players and they had a bad season. They will get past it, however, and will have a stronger team in his second year. We need to act in the same fashion.

If the kid is gunna leave because we fire an assistant coach then so be it. The program is bigger than 1 diva player.

Do you really believe that this new Coach is going to Strong Arm Corey without consequence? People are watching, and more specifically recruits are watching. Corey has leverage, and the new Coach does not. Running Corey out of town puts everything that Coach Pike has built at risk.

Hours after the press conference Coach now has a decision to make. If Vetrone is kept it sets a tone of how things will work.

I almost think Corey has forced Pikiell hand here. If Corey felt this way it couldn't be done with a tweet.

Let's be real here. We are going to bend backwards for the point guard with 1 B1G win and who has suspended or disciplined 2-3 times. I think the choice is easy here.

I will be VERY disappointed if Shoes is back.

Bdodger nails it. Stupid tweet and incredibly poor timing if you care about your program. You keep those feelings in house at least until you spend a little time with the new HC. I thought this kid already indicating he was staying? Seems like he thinks he has leverage. Not to my way of thinking.

I agree there is a "game" to play but I'll let the current coach decide on how he wants to play it. If Pikiell wants to keep Vetrone that's fine with me and if he wants to get some other assistants with different connections that's also fine with me. It's his ship now, I'll let him steer it the way he sees fit. Besides, he's got the ear of a guy like Calhoun who's been through many recruiting wars in the area. Hard to ask for a better "consigliere."

Do we even know if Shoes was getting canned? Seems like he was the guy bringing in our best recruits. OP-Ouch had an interesting take on the Corey tweet that it's in support of Vetrone having made the difference in recruiting him here, not a threat.

That's also possible too. It could be a tweet referring to the past not the future and trying to praise Vetrone's recruiting ability not so much a threat. It could be a "if it wasn't for Vetrone, I wouldn't be here" this guy is worthy of staying on board not "if Vetrone is fired, I'm gone". I can see both interpretations hard to know which is intended.

Or shows no one is above the team and Pikiell is building a team, not individuals with their own agenda.
That said, think Corey was just showing support for Shoes and not threatening to leave if Shoes does.
Just used poor judgement doing it.

Rutgers fans always look for the worst case scenario and every molehill is a mountain that can't be climbed .

That's the thing. I don't think Corey cares about the program. It's about him. Watch that episode #12 posted above. It's all about me me me. Not once did he say anything about that IIllinois game where all his points wouldn't have mattered if they won the game. I have heard other RU players say that. Stats don't mean anything if we would have won the game. And for anyone who thinks we shouldn't talk about kids.....he shouldn't tweet things like that and post videos of him being with his friends at home.
