An interesting re-tweet from Corey Sanders

Not necessarily.

If you don't agree with a tweet you pretty much make it well known, by typing something saying as much, when you re-tweet. Corey didn't, hence, the obvious conclusion is that he is happy with/agrees with the tweet.

So let me get this straight. In the deluded world of the Rutgers BB message board poster, Pikiell, despite all indications that he has a past relationship with Vetrone, can now not keep him on board because some 50 year old Twitter creepers have decided some imaginary power struggle is going on and only one can win. All without a shred of evidence based on pure speculation.

Congratulations everyone. It takes great effort to be this undermining of our new coach and best player only hours after the new coach was introduced. Has to be a record, even for this miserable crew.

Really, people want a soph to be to dictate who Pikiell should hire for his staff? Yeah, that really would set the tone for who's in charge of RU hoops. I will gladly sacrifice 3 years of Corey drama for a real college basketball coach and a competent staff.

Per twitter, Van macon, cory mcmullen are gone.

You guys want to build a winner, well then you better learn to play the game. In recruiting its all about ties. Need to keep Shoes on board so we can field a team
i am fine if

Right now, if no one came back but we had a .500 win season. I would be fine with that. This program has to trend upwards, and that means doing whatever it takes.Start from 0 if Coach wants it. He has has success, and deserves to have no constraints put on him.

This is what or why we can't get past step one....I'm not saying that I don't agree that the tweet wasn't in good taste, but somehow fans believe elite players don't have egos, don't have influence over coaches even like Coach K and others around the country....

I remember Coach K saying a few years ago that he would never take "one and done kids" and the Duke fans were high and mighty, until schools like Lehigh and Florida Gulf Coast eliminated them from the tournament while Kentucky went to Elite 8's and Final Fours like nobody's business.....suddenly, Tyus Jones, Justise Winslow and other "1 and done's" arrived and left Duke after less than 2 semesters and Duke raised another National Championship....

So we are saying that Coach K. isn't a team oriented, hard driven coach or a coach that doesn't massage egos....?? Or that Bill Self, Coach Calipari isn't dealing with diva like Isaiah Briscoe from NJ.....Elite coaches automatically change their tune when it comes to an elite difference maker and that goes for Coach Ash with football....you accommodate to win or someone else will do so with that same player and run you over.....

Teams can cut corners and hire AAU coaches for a class of recruits, but if it's not followed up with any substantial recruiting gains afterwards, what good is your program....are you truly improving or just looking for a coach to secure an extension after an NCAA bid??

I don't think you can get to step three, without accommodating and starting with step one....Does anyone think Pikiell truly gets 5 years to turn a program around while not trying to win in Year one....Can you get recruits in Year 3 of the program, if you go 9-22 without Sanders in Year One??

You can agree or disagree....Sanders is a unique talent, just like the next unique talent that arrives on the scene and becomes that next "must have player".....Izzo adjusts his game plans each and every year and by Year 3, players that are selfish, eventually fall in line, eventually earn trust given by the coaches, but its never immediate.

It's really not a discussion point and it's already been documented that Pikiell and Shoes have a pre-existing knowledge of each other and Shoes is tied to more than one player or recruit coming in the door....kids want to win, but they also need some coaches that were part of the recruiting process and school they chose. I don't see the big deal with Shoes staying a year...it makes more sense for him to stay vs not staying.

Original tweet, or re-tweet, the message is the same and it just made things VERY clear IMHO. If I'm Coach Pikiell and hear about this I sit the young man down, TODAY, and have a very, very long talk with him (even if he has already done so...). Very, very disappointed in Corey at this moment. SMH.

Id sit him down and have a very short talk with him: Go and play someplace else.

Hours after the press conference Coach now has a decision to make. If Vetrone is kept it sets a tone of how things will work.

I almost think Corey has forced Pikiell hand here. If Corey felt this way it couldn't be done with a tweet.

Let's be real here. We are going to bend backwards for the point guard with 1 B1G win and who has suspended or disciplined 2-3 times. I think the choice is easy here.

I will be VERY disappointed if Shoes is back.
What if Pikiell really wants Shoes back?

Eh, you'll still watch Rutgers games like the rest of us.

Great post. If you want to stop losing, memorize this.

.

Most of us are are well aware of the fact that MANY of these have "egos," and aren't dumb enough to think that SOME don't have "influence," however, things like this should be kept "in house." Bottom line, IMHO, a very disrespectful, behind-the-back'ish, move on Corey's part which, yes, is very "egocentric" in-and-of-itself (and I always have been, and still am, a very big fan of Mr. Sanders...). Now with some kids we could give them the old "well, he's still young..." et al, however, this is a kid who has taken his social media status to an elite level from the time he was, what, 15, so he knew exactly what he was doing when he re-tweeted that today

Now, let me repeat what I've said all along: I'm 100% fine with Shoes here IF our NEW HEAD COACH - not Corey, not you, not anybody else - is 100% on board with him being on his staff and, as of it knowing their relationship, it seems as though that will be the case and, if so, great and good for us! There are too many overly sensitive people on this board. Pikiell has the right to build his own staff. No one is forcing him to do anything. Sanders has the right to be in a situation that is comfortable for him. It doesn't make Sanders or any other player in that situation selfish. This is his college career. He has to do what he feels is right. Players like to play for coaches that they have a good relationship with. I hope it all works out in this situation. Shoes not only has ties to Sanders, but to Thiam, Laurent, etc.. as well.

you don't hire a coach for 1.6 m and expect him to take orders from a 19 yr old

Can't win without the players. The 1950's style Military Dictatorship is Over. Collaboration is the name of the game. And that means that players have more say than ever before. Sorry if you guys feel threatened. Welcome to the New America, lol.

I agree there is a "game" to play but I'll let the current coach decide on how he wants to play it. If Pikiell wants to keep Vetrone that's fine with me and if he wants to get some other assistants with different connections that's also fine with me. It's his ship now, I'll let him steer it the way he sees fit. Besides, he's got the ear of a guy like Calhoun who's been through many recruiting wars in the area. Hard to ask for a better "consigliere."
lol,Calhoun was squeaky clean when he got to Uconn and looked like a city sewage worker after a double shift by the time he left. well documented.

This is probably your best ever post. People are delusional on this board. Yeah, lets kick the best player we have had here in 20 plus years to the curb because he wants a coach he is close with to stay. Genius move that would be. Maybe he shouldn't have tweeted it and maybe he is little bit to deal with but so are most stud players. It's coaches job to make it work and deal with his personality. I saw a kid who played hard all year, didn't get pissed at his teammates, supported them when we were losing terribly. He seems like a very good kid. Is he perfect? Maybe not, but he is a freakin GREAT basketball player and we ABSOLUTELY need him and if keeping Shoes keeps him then keep Shoes.

From my vantage point, Sanders seems to be doing a pretty good job of undermining the coach minutes, not hours, after the new coach was introduced. It's Corey that's on extended spring break, shooting hoops in Florida and tweeting about Shoes while Coach Pikiell is in the RAC talking to reporters and Mike Williams is playing pick up games with Pikiell's kids.

He's the best frosh I've ever seen play for RU on the banks but he was also a member of one of the worst teams I've ever seen and he missed about 1/6 of the season with suspensions. #FightorFlight, indeed.

i dont see how anything good can come from our new coach making a decision based on the whim of a freshman

look - I hope Coach Pikiell and Corey talk this out, and that Corey stays. no argument there as he's the most talented kid we've had in a while.

that said, the impression I got from the press conference and the interview with his top player is that our new coach is not going to get bullied into anything and won't make a rash decision. if he decides to keep Shoes, it will be based on a heck of a lot more than Corey's tweet

this is the nice thing about having a guy who's built a program and has been a head coach for a while...I trust him to do the right thing.

why is there so much hate directed at our best player in ages over a ****ing retweet? if he leaves its probably cause he realizes we have 1000 total fans and more than half of them seem to act like crackheads on a daily basis.

Let's get one thing straight. Our only B1G win was against Minnesota. Corey Sanders isn't that good. It isn't like we won half our games.
This post makes a lot of sense. Good thought process. Similar to talent doesn't matter when playing defense unless it is a high school game then the more talented team will obviously play better defense. Keep dropping these gems of basketball knowledge on the board. I look forward to the next one.

Laurent came across as a nice ,well spoken smart kid when I asked him about the coaching change..he understood there are some things you as a player cant controll..kid seemed like a stand up person who can make his own decisions.

You might want to look at most of the top teams around the country, they ALL hire people close to superstar athletes. How do you think Whitehead ended up at Seton Hall? RU needs to play this kind of game (within the rules) to win over some top recruits.

Turn it up a notch.. from Shoes Twitter..

Guys, somehow you think people want to play for Rutgers when the basketball program has absolutely nothing. There are HS programs with better facilities than us. Our old and decrepit arena can't draw flies. Noone is putting money into this program. Hell it took decades to fix the speakers. And don't give me the crap that he should want to play for someone he met 4 days ago. Its not like he's Calhoun. Sanders wants to stay because of Shoes. Be lucky we have that.
