Anyone else notice Gavin?

Gavin is a better athlete than people are saying. He can put a ball through his leg in the air and dunk it. Bad athletes can’t do that. His problem is between the ears and desire. He’s soft.

Where is his Dad bashing Pike and Dylan lol?
Right. Most here have absolutely no idea what athleticism means. It certainly helps, but much more than that is necessary to be a good basketball player. Myles Johnson doesn’t have any athleticism or coordination at all but was a good defender. The term is strictly about superior physical talent, not vision, anticipation, heart, etc. So many dumb views about what it means … epic embarrassing.

Lol. No, vision and anticipation have nothing to do with athleticism. Unreal ignorance here. Pike must be a great athlete too because his anticipation is phenomenal, a better athlete than Bailey even.

Athleticism is 100% physical thing. Look up the definition. Your definition doesn’t count. Sports require other talents too, sure. GG exceptionally athletic for his size but simply not good enough in other aspects

You are truly the only person on the planet who thinks GG is a better overall athlete than Dylan.

You confirmed what I suspected - you think athleticism is solely limited to jumping and running. Congrats you’re a simpleton.

So you think Dylan’s ability to dribble through traffic, to drive to the hoop and (seemingly effortlessly) get to the rim everytime, his court vision, etc are just skills that can be taught/learned?!?!?

He is uniquely GIFTED in those regards. Those are innate TALENTS. It’s all included in his overall athleticism. Those TALENTS (while certainly honed through practice) simply cannot be taught (it’s why he is a friggin lottery pick).

I am grateful that Gavin chose RU and gave us a chance to play for us. I am sorry it never worked out for him. He was always nice to me whenever I attended a practice. I feel sorry for him and hope he can find a team where he can have some success next season. I just don’t understand how many can enjoy bashing Gavin. I am certain he feels bad that things didn’t work out the way he hoped they would.

The guy claimed he would never transfer. Then as soon as the going gets tough, that is exactly what he does

GG is more athletic yes. Not near the talent. Where you and others are proved wrong is by reiterating that GG is less athletic than almost everyone else in recent memory too, showing you don’t know what the word even means. Read above: “Myles Johnson very athletic” LOL. He’s the least athletic player here in probably 30 years.

GG is more athletic than Dylan in every measure of the word.

Here’s more: notice I didn’t say GG isn’t more athletic than Bailey. Does Bailey have better vision, anticipation, leadership and other irrelevant non physical traits stated above than Harper ? No he doesn’t. But he’s also more athletic than Harper. Would you agree ? Or are you flat earth dumb in that comparison too.

Mulcahy had those non physical talents too. Irrelevant. Not athleticism.

So how come you and others argue that these Harper traits only count as athleticism when comparing him to GG but not to Bailey ?

Take off the homer glasses “Myles” ha ha ha and realize that while Harper is a great player he’s not tremendously athletic.

Look up what the word means since clearly you don’t know.

Says it right here
“intangibles, skill and power rather than athleticism” You guys just don’t understand his game or what the word means
The only thing I clearly understand about his game is that it’s not at B10 level. He can still have a nice career if he makes a smarter choice going forward. Don’t really see any point in bashing the kid, he’s not the only one out there with a dickhead father.

Agree. I am not the one bashing him. Above others have called him the worst player we’ve had, unathletic, etc.

What curiously angers everyone here is the statement that he’s actually more athletic than Harper. He clearly is. Harper far surpasses him in every other aspect of basketball but that’s not good enough for them. Homerism at its worst.

Not sure why this thread is so popular. Kid doesn't play anymore. It would be one thing if he lit us up for Nebraska and talked trash or something. It's the complete opposite. DNP. Time to let it go.

Waliyy was super athletic - the only issue was he just couldn't dribble, shoot or pass.....but he destroyed at Midnight Madness dunking!! I saw signs of life with Gavin last year, and I think Gavin is as much that he's a little fragile mentally/confidence as it is anything else. A shooter shoots - his size/weight doesn't matter all that much (see Steph Curry), but Gavin had issues with that shooting all year. Waliyy was definitely more overhyped, and the bigger bust than Gavin!

I recall his father was somewhat anonymously on these boards a while back. He came off really poorly, so I am sure that is part of the problem in the background. It doesn't sound like the family understands reality
Also a recipe for a fragile mental state for his son when things don't go right or there is a bit of adversity - which is exactly what I think happened to Gavin.

Must be someone pretending to be Shelby, no third person in his posts
Shelby pretends to be Shelby at times. It’s possible Shelby uses multiple screen names to debate himself. He may even refute himself like Fieldhouse Al of La Mancha does on every post.

See above.
Other people have said MiloTalon was his family member or something.
That's also the person who messaged me defending GGs defense as not as bad as it seems.
I'm sure he's not the first parent to be on team forums, but that's next level crazy to do so. You're not in the high school stands anymore where you and your wife are the king and queen and everyone saying your kid is the next coming. You are in a college team sports forum which is the closest definition to a cesspool when things go wrong (even when things go right things can go upside down in a hurry). Any parent knows somebody being skeptical of your kid hits different. Therefore the last place on earth I'd want to be as a parent of someone on the team is on said forums. Have to think as school/pro orgranization it is said not only to the players, but to the parents as well to stay off the forums and ignore media as much as possible.

Shelby talking to Shelby would be far more intelligent conversation than exists commonly here. Save for a few, ignorance here is insufferable.

We’re not angry. It’s just a dumb take.

I honestly don’t even know what you’re talking about re: GG.

I only know what I saw on the court last year. He moved well I guess but I don’t recall a single play where he wowed me in anyway with this amazing athleticism you’re talking about. Not a single play. We heard he was… but I don’t remember seeing it. He looked like a DECENT athlete I guess. That’s what he showed on the floor.

GG should have realized how much work he had to do after last year to develop into a high major player.

Leaving the program just gives you the false sense that it’s the program that needs to change, not something about your game, attitude or overall development. Many fans had unrealistic expectations for him.

It’s not a small effort to transfer schools and huge distraction from what he needs to be working on.

I’m rooting for him to figure it out.

Compassion and kindness is so beta.

Much cooler to have contempt for a college sophomore and somehow feel like a victim because a kid transferred.
I think:

(1) it was reasonable to be annoyed at him when he left due to his comments, his/his family's seemingly blaming his struggles on Pike, the fact he went to another Big Ten team etc

(2) after this time, I think there should be forgiveness for the kid (but maybe not for his family) around here

(3) that said,
(a) I think it's okay to point out to the people around here who also blamed his struggles on Pike how they were wrong
(b) I think it's okay to take some joy in his losing and not getting off the bench SPECIFICALLY in his game against us
