I have no idea the extent of Devish's injury, but hoping for the best. BTN showed him with his catching elbow iced sitting in the dugout, and said he was having trouble squeezing the glove. Not only is he our catalyst, but he is hands down our best and most important player. He's had a remarkable season and an admirable career...and he deserves to be able to play it out this final week (and hopefully more).
It's very frustrating that we couldn't have one more B1G series. I think it makes a lot more sense to play 27 conference games instead of squeezing in that one non-conference series in the middle of April (like us against St. Joseph's, Illinois against St. Louis, Iowa against, Kansas State). Although it was nice to sweep St. Joes, I would have much rather played downtrodden Purdue, or gotten our fair swing against either Illinois or Iowa.
As for the tiebreakers, here is the Big Ten's
procedure. From what I understand, that would mean winning percentage against common opponents.
Against Illinois, our common opponents are Penn State, Nebraska, Indiana, Ohio State, Maryland, and Michigan. Considering those six teams, we are 8-10, while Illinois is 8-7, with three still to play against Michigan. Therefore, that tiebreaker can only work against us -- if we sweep Northwestern and Illinois takes 1-of-3 from Michigan, we tie at 11-13, but they win vs. common opponents, 9-9 to 8-10. That means Michigan must sweep Illinois, no questions asked.
Against Iowa, our common opponents are Maryland, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Penn State. In those 18 games, we are 8-10, while Iowa is 7-8, with three still to play vs. PSU. Should Iowa take 1-of-3 from Penn State, PSU claims the 7th seed at 13-11, and then Iowa will be with us at 11-13 and 8-10 vs. common opponents. The next tie-breaker appears to be RPI, which I think would favor us, considering our very difficult strength-of-schedule and the fact that entering this weekend, we were ahead of them by 28 spots. So I would assume that means that as long as Penn State wins the series, we will finish over Iowa. And any scenario of that series -- except for Iowa taking 2-of-3 -- works out in our favor.
Where it really gets shaky is if Illinois takes 1-of-3 from Michigan, Iowa takes 1-of-3 from Penn State, we sweep Northwestern, and Michigan State sweeps Maryland. In that case, we have a four-way tie for the eighth spot...and I have no idea how that works. I'm guessing it would be common opponents, which would be Ohio State and Penn State. In that case, Maryland would qualify because Maryland went 5-1 against those common opponents, Illinois went 4-2, we went 3-3, and Iowa (assuming 1-of-3 vs. PSU) would be 2-4.
So from all that, here is what I gather must happen:
1) We must sweep Northwestern.
2) Michigan State must sweep Maryland.
3) Michigan must sweep Illinois.
4) Penn State wins the series vs. Iowa OR Iowa sweeps Penn State.
I think that all makes sense...and if all that happens, it works out favorably for us.
Having said all that, there is only one thing we can do this weekend...focus on playing good, hard Rutgers baseball and beating Northwestern. Hopefully, the rest works itself out. Go RU!
