We are just about out of the BIG 10 tournament after our debacle at Michigan last weekend. We have a very slight chance of qualifying but if we have any chance at all we must get at least 2 wins vs. Maryland this weekend and must sweep Northwestern. A multiple of other things must happen for us to qualify but it is not impossible. I sure hope we will show some pride and play much better this weekend. By the way will Carter ever play again this season? The guy missed like the first 20 games of the season than played about 20 games and now has been out for like 2 weeks and he was batting about .400. Did he re injure his hamstring or else what is he out from?

Missing Carter and Harris was severely hampered the offense. I thinker need to sweep the balance of the Big 10 schedule to have a chance to jump over the 3 teams over RU to qualify for the Tourney

Shouldn't Harris be back from suspension this weekend? He's missed 2 full weekend series already.

RU up early 1-0. Both Harris and Carter back in the starting lineup. Howie Brey starting pitcher.

Howie Brey goes all 9 innings and notches a 5-4 win ! Brey is a terrific pitcher ! Bowerbank w 3 huge Ribbies !

This was a very big win for us. We need to win at least one of the next two games with Maryland. They are 10-9 now and we are 7-12 in league.

RU wins the Saturday game 7-5 ! With John O'Reilly picking up the win. Homer and 2 RBI's by RU DH Mike Martinez ! Tomorrow's game, noon, is on BTN and BTN2go for free .

Very nice win. And it is nice to see Martinez get a homerun. It seems that we have not been seen many of these lately. However, I was a bit worried when I saw the box score and saw that Martinez had substituted for Carter. I hope he is not hurt again.

The team has really played so much better so far this weekend. What a difference it seems to have made with Harris and Carter both back in the lineup.

O'Reilly pitching a good game was the key. Let's hope our 3rd starter today keeps it going.

Carter only had one at-bat and then was replaced in the last game. He is not playing in this game. Campbell also has not played yet the series. I wonder if they are both injured again.

Total pictchers dual so far into the fifth. Twice we've got runners to third-base and didn't get them in. Seems like a decent amount of Rutgers fans there though.

and now Devish is out as well.

Awful he should ha e pulled him after the 3 straight high balls to walk the kid. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

I am surprised that they went to the reliever with the most control difficulties in that situation.

We really don't have a lot of pop in this line up. Devish is our best ballplayer & a real catalyst. Losing him for NW would not be good.

Not mathematically eliminated. Still have a chance to play our way in, but we're going to need a lot of help.

Assuming Iowa hangs on against Michigan State (they lead 5-1 in the eighth), the standings will look like this:

7) Maryland 11-10
8) Penn State 11-10
9) Iowa 10-11
10) Illinois 10-11
11) Rutgers 8-13

I'm not sure what the deep tiebreakers would be if we ended up tied with Iowa or Illinois because we haven't played either of them. I would assume it would be winning percentage against common B1G opponents, in which case I think both Iowa and Illinois have us beat. The easiest way for us to get in would be to tie with Maryland and PSU because by taking 2-of-3 from both of them, we would own the tiebreaker. Therefore, I see two scenarios -- both unlikely but not impossible -- in which we can sneak in and grab the eighth seed.

Scenario 1

1) RU sweeps Northwestern.
2) Michigan sweeps Illinois.
3) Michigan State sweeps Maryland.
4) Iowa sweeps Penn State.

In this case, thanks to holding breakers over Maryland and Penn State, the final standings would be...

7) Iowa 13-11
8) RU 11-13
9) Maryland 11-13
10) PSU 11-13
11) Illinois 10-14

Scenario 2

1) RU sweeps Northwestern.
2) Michigan sweeps Illinois.
3) Michigan State sweeps Maryland.
4) Penn State sweeps Iowa.

In this case, thanks to holding the breaker over Maryland, the final standings would be...

7) PSU 14-10
8) RU 11-13
9) Maryland 11-13
10) Iowa 10-14
11) Illinois 10-14

Now there may be some other more in depth scenarios, but these are the two most obvious. Highly unlikely, but not impossible. We're down, but not out. Let's go RU and pull this thing out!

In your first scenario if Iowa sweeps Penn State they would be 13-11. I wonder what our odds are? We must sweep over Northwestern and 3 other teams must get swept. It would be nice to see it happen but the odds must be very high against this happening. I guess Illinois could win one over Michigan and still tie us at 11-13. I wonder who would have a tie breaker between us? How bad was Devish hurt? I must go back and watch part of today's game to see where he got hit. Thanks for posting. I also was spending time looking this over a few hours ago. It is a shame we could not have one at least one other game in league. It is also a shame we didn't play Purdue.

I have no idea the extent of Devish's injury, but hoping for the best. BTN showed him with his catching elbow iced sitting in the dugout, and said he was having trouble squeezing the glove. Not only is he our catalyst, but he is hands down our best and most important player. He's had a remarkable season and an admirable career...and he deserves to be able to play it out this final week (and hopefully more).

It's very frustrating that we couldn't have one more B1G series. I think it makes a lot more sense to play 27 conference games instead of squeezing in that one non-conference series in the middle of April (like us against St. Joseph's, Illinois against St. Louis, Iowa against, Kansas State). Although it was nice to sweep St. Joes, I would have much rather played downtrodden Purdue, or gotten our fair swing against either Illinois or Iowa.

As for the tiebreakers, here is the Big Ten's procedure. From what I understand, that would mean winning percentage against common opponents.

Against Illinois, our common opponents are Penn State, Nebraska, Indiana, Ohio State, Maryland, and Michigan. Considering those six teams, we are 8-10, while Illinois is 8-7, with three still to play against Michigan. Therefore, that tiebreaker can only work against us -- if we sweep Northwestern and Illinois takes 1-of-3 from Michigan, we tie at 11-13, but they win vs. common opponents, 9-9 to 8-10. That means Michigan must sweep Illinois, no questions asked.

Against Iowa, our common opponents are Maryland, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Penn State. In those 18 games, we are 8-10, while Iowa is 7-8, with three still to play vs. PSU. Should Iowa take 1-of-3 from Penn State, PSU claims the 7th seed at 13-11, and then Iowa will be with us at 11-13 and 8-10 vs. common opponents. The next tie-breaker appears to be RPI, which I think would favor us, considering our very difficult strength-of-schedule and the fact that entering this weekend, we were ahead of them by 28 spots. So I would assume that means that as long as Penn State wins the series, we will finish over Iowa. And any scenario of that series -- except for Iowa taking 2-of-3 -- works out in our favor.

Where it really gets shaky is if Illinois takes 1-of-3 from Michigan, Iowa takes 1-of-3 from Penn State, we sweep Northwestern, and Michigan State sweeps Maryland. In that case, we have a four-way tie for the eighth spot...and I have no idea how that works. I'm guessing it would be common opponents, which would be Ohio State and Penn State. In that case, Maryland would qualify because Maryland went 5-1 against those common opponents, Illinois went 4-2, we went 3-3, and Iowa (assuming 1-of-3 vs. PSU) would be 2-4.

So from all that, here is what I gather must happen:

1) We must sweep Northwestern.
2) Michigan State must sweep Maryland.
3) Michigan must sweep Illinois.
4) Penn State wins the series vs. Iowa OR Iowa sweeps Penn State.

I think that all makes sense...and if all that happens, it works out favorably for us.

Having said all that, there is only one thing we can do this weekend...focus on playing good, hard Rutgers baseball and beating Northwestern. Hopefully, the rest works itself out. Go RU!

To show how little respect Rutgers baseball gets from the rest of the Big Ten and the people who cover it in the media ... Northwestern has its worst baseball team since 1970 yet this article raises the possibility of Northwestern coming to Bainton Field and sweeping Rutgers.

http://dailynorthwestern.com/2016/0...d-by-cal-tie-single-season-record-for-losses/
The only way Rutgers will gain respect against B1G opponents regardless of sport is to defeat them on a regular basis which is easier said then done.

Northwestern won the opener 5-1. Lackluster play from Rutgers. Early in the game, 4 strikeouts in a row from Rutgers batters - the last two looking, not putting the ball in-play against Northwestern's pitcher who is not a strike out pitcher. Taking too many pitches each at-bat -- the Northwestern pitcher threw strikes all game and pitched ahead of the Rutgers batters. A Rutgers base-runner, running with his head down on a hit-and-run, getting doubled up on a right-fielder-to-1B double-play. Losing baseball. As flat as they played, Rutgers had chances to catch-up right down to the last out. Northwestern hit 2 HRs. Rutgers -- warning track outs. Rutgers needs to get bigger and stronger, particularly the corner infield and outfield positions.
