Beningo just killed us

I know people don't care here . But a lot of people care what people on that station say.
Mikey from Brooklyn gets his sports news from the fan . There are a lot of Mikey's out there .
Mikey from Brooklyn ain't coming to Piscataway unless the Jets are playing here & personally both Mikey & this gavone can kiss my fat ass.

I'm trying to figure out why local sports broadcasters and non-college football fans think their opinion on Rutgers in the Big Ten matters. We're here, and we aren't going anywhere. Deal with it.

SIRIUS/XM RADIO is a must for serious college sports fans.

Terrific for music, traffic/weather , comedy as well.

What/who is a beningo?

He's a guy with a greasy 70s mustache and a fake Brooklyn accent (he has lived in NJ his whole life). He also gets to work 4 hours early so he can sit on the toilet, read the papers and steal sports writer's ideas. This how he "prepares" for his job. Oh, and he's also a best selling author (lol) who's book can be bought for 7 cents on Amazon.

Joe Beningo might be the dumbest person on the radio. Literally. The guy is a mental midget whose use of the English language, knowledge of sports, and choice of teams (sorry guys..) are, lumped together, shockingly bad.

AreYouNUTS - I object to the word "might", but great post otherwise!!!

Joe is OK but ALL he knows is Mets, Yankees, Jets, Giants, Rangers, Knicks, and a little Isles and Devils. Pretends to know golf because he now plays it. Literally knows nothing else. Someone once asked him a World Cup question and his response was "soccer? is that even a sport?"
Are you kidding he literally knows almost nothing about the teams you named. Yes he talks a lot about mets and jets but is hands down the most moronic uninformed sports radio show host in the NY market. He brings nothing to the table and how anyone can actually enjoy listening to his simple minded often incoherent ramblings is beyond me.

A caller 'Mark from Rutgers ' called in and told joe that it's a mistake Rutgers is in the BIG.
Beningo basically said it's the biggest joke of all time that Rutgers in the the league , specifically the football program .
more like mike from st johns or phil from psu

Born and raised in NJ, Joe graduated from Franklin College (Indiana). Joe applied to but was not accepted at Rutgers?

Too bad because it's the most popular sports radio station in this area. Millions and millions heard how we don't belong and many will believe it. We have not shown we belong yet. I don't get why you guys get so upset at what people say about our sports programs. Most of it appears to be true. We have great potential but had one really good year and played in a 2nd tier bowl game for our efforts. Donate money so we can get some facilities. Benigno is an AHole but everything he said is mostly true. Thankfully we are not going anywhere we are BIG. When the BIG money finally gets here we can spend like a BIG because God knows as a whole are alums and fans are some cheapos. Thank god for the BIG money it's the only way we will compete.

I live in Boston so I haven't a clue as to who this jerk is. But who cares what he thinks? Rutgers will turn it around and I think it will happen sooner , especially in football, than this a-hole believes. It will just make it that much sweeter when it happens..Mark my words...

Haters gonna hate! Never heard of this guy before. We are B1G and we're going to stay B1G. Deal with it, Benigno.

Well he's not a handsome man - and looks a little retarded.

Just another guy with a "face for radio" and a brain for kindergarten.

Met him once at Bar A during one of the WFAN Fatso things...weird, weird dude. I'll leave it at that.

Beningo is a joke that he is on the radio.
He should go back to being a caller into the Show from his home in Middletown, NJ

I don't much like or listen to Joe and Evan but if Beningo is so dumb you have to give him credit. He went from caller to host and makes more money than most people in the area. Lots of people should be so dumb.....

Benigno is playing to the established WFAN formula - rip anything associated with NJ. The NY-centric audience, which holds NJ in contempt, will nod approvingly. And a good chunk of the self-loathing NJ audience will nod approvingly as well.

You nailed it. How true that is.

Beningno is right. Rutgers has played on only one significant game in ten years and fans think they are a BIG material.

We have been hearing about a wall around the state when it came to recruiting. After joining the BIG we can't even get any top 20 kid to play here. You can't win this way. It is time to close the shop and focus on all sports besides football and men's basketball.
Well, the cat is out of the bag. We now know who made the call as "Mark from Rutgers".

If you really think that "millions and millions heard ...and many will believe" what Joe Beningo had to say, about Rutgers, I've got some oceanfront property in Nebraska to talk to you about.

Right? I mean, full disclosure, I don't listen to sports radio - EVER - but I thought I knew who the characters were. I've never heard of this guy, ever.
Yep. Far be it for me to criticize others hobbies, but at least with the weather, I'm looking for insights from known, credentialed experts, as opposed to sports radio guys, whose qualifications are, uhhh, what exactly?

Iirc, when he was a caller he was "Joe from Saddle River". Think he lives in Ramsey now or someplace up there.

I heard it...he ended his rant by saying " Thanks for the call, Plum Street"

Beningo is a hack, but he is the New Jersey sports fan that represents the views of the 40+ crowd like it or not. Why does RU have a hard time keeping NJ kids in state? It is because the parents of 16-18 year olds feel that their top flight athlete could do better than RU and they listen to the Wfan and read newspapers which mostly portrays Rutgers as a clown college when it comes to the main Athletic sports. It's about image and marketing. Rutgers has to find $$ to market the school and the sports programs better. Of course winning big is the best marketing but only a select amount of schools fit that category. Schiano was good at marketing the program, and RU was making some headway, but the all the scandals have eroded that headway. That is why I like the Ash hire, young energetic coaches who don't give a s_it about the past.

The 50+ crowd in NJ will never accept RU as a College football Athletic Power, don't sweat it. You need to make the 40 and under crowd know that RU means business in the popular sports. That should be Rutgers goal going forward.

Repeating something over and over again has become acceptable in our society whether the statement has any validity or not.
The perpetuation of lies in our culture is common and seen in religion, race, and politics. The Star-Ledger was even able to get our AD fired (Mulcahey)
by intentionally avoiding the facts. The number of arrests this year in football seemingly exemplified a rogue and uncontrollable football program.
The media continues to convince it's ignorant disciples that the expenditures on RU Football is bankrupting the State of NJ.
If we objectively look at the facts, most of common assumptions held by the NY/NJ fan base can be proven to be false.
The PR department at RU has done a terrible job of getting a positive message out that illustrates the actual reality of Rutgers bAthletics.
For instance:
1. The number of arrests this year is unacceptable but it does not even get us into the top 50 for the number of arrests at other football programs over the last 5 years.
Why was no one at RU pointing that out?
2. The football program is in a downturn obviously but over the last 11 years it has winning record, has been to 9 bowls, has a winning record in those bowls, has increased attendance exponentially over those ten years
3. The Rutgers Football team makes money, period.
4. The other sports programs at Rutgers, the ones that offer fairness to the student population, all cost money. Period

We all need to argue the real facts, it is the burden we bare as Loyal Sons of Rutgers.

They still don't get its all about the location. And not so much about the current state of the MBB and MFB teams. Yes they are in bad shape.

Wish we still had Schiano and Gary Waters coaching. Things would be much better.

Schiano and Waters . . . really? Mediocrity defined. . . . if I thought that was the best we can do I'd give up my tickets today.

You need to learn to compare apples to apples and not apples to oranges. This isn't about comparing Rutgers to other schools. Consider where Rutgers was in both sports in the late 90s, then where Schiano and Waters had the programs headed speaks about the job they did to reverse the bottom b*tch mindset. It's kind of what some of idiots have when viewing the entire picture...hint hint.

Schiano was a great recruiter. When do you think we will see that again? Can't even get a 4 star now in the
B1G.

When do you think the basketball team will be above .500 again? In our lifetimes?

A lifetime is a long time Mr Dramatic...

Hang in there...by 2019/2020 you'll be smiling...

the only way we see the BB team over 50% is when they get a head coach that can coach college players. Love Eddie but as a college coach he absolutely sucks

I remember 2 years ago Beningo thought Rutgers played against teams like Fordham. I am not kidding. He was not being sarcastic. He literally was under that impression.

I'm certain he has no clue that Rutgers is the State University of New Jersey. He thinks (or, at least thought) Rutgers is some small Ivy league school.

And I know he would pass out cold if he found out that Rutgers has beaten teams like Michigan, Maryland, Arkansas, Washington State and North Carolina over the past few years.

I actually enjoy listening to Joe (can do with a little less Evan) and also Mike Fran. These guys are around my age, and their recall of some of the players, events and other non-sport related things (like TV shows) from the 60's is something I enjoy listening. Joe is also refreshing since you haver all these cookie cutter, Syracuse grads all over talk radio, and it's good to hear a guy who talks like me and wears his sports passion on his sleeve.

I doubt, however, that Joe is familiar enough with Rutgers sports to beat them down. Football has actually been holding its own with mid-level teams (Indiana, Maryland), and we had respectable and OK seasons in two years of play. Basketball is the disaster, but most other sports (wrestling, women's bball, track) we do much better. Unfortunately, Joe owns the bully pulpit, and sometimes he spits out opinions just to have callers call in to fill air time.
