Beningo just killed us

I actually enjoy listening to Joe (can do with a little less Evan) and also Mike Fran. These guys are around my age, and their recall of some of the players, events and other non-sport related things (like TV shows) from the 60's is something I enjoy listening. Joe is also refreshing since you haver all these cookie cutter, Syracuse grads all over talk radio, and it's good to hear a guy who talks like me and wears his sports passion on his sleeve.

I doubt, however, that Joe is familiar enough with Rutgers sports to beat them down. Football has actually been holding its own with mid-level teams (Indiana, Maryland), and we had respectable and OK seasons in two years of play. Basketball is the disaster, but most other sports (wrestling, women's bball, track) we do much better. Unfortunately, Joe owns the bully pulpit, and sometimes he spits out opinions just to have callers call in to fill air time.

This is an accurate post .

Beningo is a hack, but he is the New Jersey sports fan that represents the views of the 40+ crowd like it or not. .

Uhm, not really, As 40+ NJ sports fan, with plenty of friends and social circles, I don't know a single person who listens to Beningo and his "I don't get how this could happen, the stats say otherwise" sidekick. Not one.

I feel like this thread is from 1985. Who listens to these guys now with so much more and better info at your fingertips? The FAN had its day in the sun back in the 80s and early 90's. Its a dinosaur just like their hosts.

No, THIS is an "accurate" post.

I've heard Joe and Evan say mildly positive things about Rutgers in the Big East days. I remember them doing a segment on the USF game where Juwan Jameson went all video game on that one dude. But, yeah, Joe has been a broken record about how we do't belong in the Big Ten.

Mark "from Rutgers", more like some idiot who cheers on another school.

Ironically, all of Joe's sports teams have been a joke for the most part, so he knows jokes.
Actually there is a UCONN guy who calls in under fake names to the station on a regular basis who cannot get over RU being selected over UCONN. This was probably him again. Hopefully they continue to rot in the AAC.

Yep...he can't seem to understand that UConn is not academically up to B1G Standards.

It is not about Beningno, he is just a tool, unfortunately he is part of a large group of over 50+ sports fans that feel the same way as he does about RU Sports. Of course, I don't agree with him and you as an avid RU fan don't agree, but I am talking about the masses in North Jersey who think exactly like this guy!

Nuts
I do not listen to FAN...ever, unless there's a game on there I have interest in while I'm driving.
But someone is listening to Joe, and they're not all over 50 or he'd be fired.
FAN does not fool around with ratings.

Oh I AGREE that people actually do "tune-in," don't get me wrong, but some of the statements in this thread are so over-the-top outrageous I've been laughing for a couple of days now.

I have not lived in the metro area for several years, and I cannot believe this ass-clown is still on the radio. His initial presence was a joke, but on overnights -- especially after a crushing Jets loss -- he was amusing as hell. But insight? Any kind of clue about the bigger off-the-field issues? Please.

On the other hand, ANYBODY here who worries what he thinks about those bigger off-the-field issues might as well look to Cosmo for foreign policy information and The New Republic for advice on clitoral stimulation. You can't bark up the wrong tree. Joe and his ilk are just yahoos entertaining themselves by bitching about their teams and finding validation in those rare times they win.

Our athletic program being invited to the Big Ten was a joke. How original. Fans all over the country think the same thing. WE know why we're in, and now it's up to us to make sure we elevate our game to match our cable household numbers. If Joe doesn't grasp that simple fact, he's a bigger idiot than I thought he was, and that is a truly frightening concept.

He was -- by far -- the least intelligent person on that station, which I did listen to pretty regularly before moving. I don't care that they don't give Rutgers much time; you know that going in. But I do care about foolishness bordering on abject stupidity; I never could handle Russo, for example, while Francesa, while stuck in another era, was more blowhard than moron. But there was entertainment to be had there. Either one alone, not so much. Glad I got out when I did.

Benigno, though, brings nothing to the table unless you are a diehard fan of his teams. Which makes analyzing what he says or complaining about what he says as anything other than a diehard fan of his teams is a colossal waste of time. Go fingerpaint or something.

People to this station . It's the biggest sports platform in the area. To pretend otherwise is a joke

Yeah, it finishes first in the ratings among two contestants.

WFAN is 9th overall in the NYC radio market for January '16. It averaged a 3.8 share. Half as many people listen to WFAN at any given moment as listen to WLTW (Lite FM). The FAN is a tenth of a point above the 10th place finisher, WAXQ (Q 104.3).

You could easily make the argument that what Jim Kerr, Shelley Sonstein and Maria Mellito have to say about Rutgers football is just as important as the opinion of a former mediocre quarterback, a fat somnambulant and some guy nobody's ever heard of.

The Bachelor is the number one TV show in America too. That doesn't mean we have to cater to the show's fanbase or beg for the host to pay attention to Rutgers athletics.

Nobody said people don't listen to it. What I - and others - are saying, is that a few posters here, yourself included, are GREATLY overestimating the "pull" these guys (ESPECIALLY Benigno) have on the general sports-loving population. The # of people who probably remember ANYTHING Joe said the other day, about RU, and would ACTUALLY CARE, I would bet doesn't even reach 6-figures. Think about that for a second.

Right . But to get trashed on the biggest stage in the area is never a good thing .

It's NOT the "biggest stage in the area".

It's the #1 (out of a whole 2) sports talk radio stations in the market.

Let's put it another way - Joe Nolan says great things about Rutgers football on a regular basis and the show that he's on is the #1 radio morning show in the market. Period. He reaches twice as many listeners as WFAN.

So yeah - nobody gives a shit about Joey Bananas, or whatever the f*ck his name is.

I bet you if I walked the streets of NYC tomorrow, and asked 1,000 men between 40 and 50 what Joe Beningo said about Rutgers earlier in the week, less than 10 would even know let alone care. You are SERIOUSLY overestimating the pull and/or effect that these guys have over the general sports-loving public these days.

Plum Street is one of those guys who will always go left if everyone else goes right. I doubt if Plum Street could explain why he has to be opposite other than to p*ss people off. I guess it makes him happy... good for him.[winking]

So..one of the reasons RU got in B10 was the NY/NJ media market..but when any member of this media calls RU out for losing 25 straight B10 bball games..or Football team being a big mess last year..hes a "know nothing"?
I would agree if you wanted to bash a media member from say Morgantown WVA,saying he knew little about sports ,but NYC(WHILE ITS A PRO TOWN) Is the media center on USA..cant have it both ways,we win take the props(2006)..lose..take a beating ,its the lime light of this area..we are not in bumblef*** USA....deal with it.

I bet less than 10 would even know who Joe Beningo was.

And the people who do know who he is, and listen to him, are not forming their opinions of Rutgers Athletics based on his rants. They are forming their opinions based on Rutgers winning games, and news reports about Rutgers (which unfortunately includes things like the arrests last year and Flood's shenanigans). All that Beningo is doing, for those who listen to him, is providing entertainment by confirming opinions they already have or by being a shockjock by disagreeing with opinions they already have. But there is pretty much no one who is forming opinions based on Beningo's radio rants.

That's because you don't know the difference between "media market" and "radio personality".

Rutgers was brought into the B10 for the NY media market, not for endorsements from NY local radio personalities.

It is kind of like the people who don't understand how Tim Pernetti could be a media expert and fail so badly on the media handling of the Rice incident. They don't understand that Pernetti's expertise is in media business, not press relations, and they don't understand that those are not the same thing.

When Ash has this team competing in meaningful bowl games in the next couple years, he'll hop right on the bandwagon along with the rest of the NY media.

Opposite ? I just posted what I heard beningo say . The only thing I want to do is see Rutgers win and win big . I think everyone here wants that , even if they don't admit to it

wait ,upstream said hes not part of the media..

You need to learn to compare apples to apples and not apples to oranges. This isn't about comparing Rutgers to other schools. Consider where Rutgers was in both sports in the late 90s, then where Schiano and Waters had the programs headed speaks about the job they did to reverse the bottom b*tch mindset. It's kind of what some of idiots have when viewing the entire picture...hint hint.

Schiano and football yes, absolutely, but IMO basketball was on the right path in Bannon's first few seasons until Dahntay Jones transferred to Duke and the naked foul shooting incident occurred. Point is I don't think Waters was any better than Bannon and certainly not better than Wenzel.

I like Joe Beningo as a person but he and Evan are boring hacks and know nothing about college sports. Francesa still thinks it's 1986 when it comes to college football and while Boomer would be most likely to have a clue as the man knows his football, he spends 100% of his energy and focus on the NFL game. I don't like her but I'd bet Kim Jones is the radio personality most in-tune with college football on that station and that's because she's a PSU cult member.

I agree with your point about WFAN but Boomer Esiason was far from a mediocre QB. He was the league MVP in 1988. And if anything Boomer speaks well of RU football and it's potential. He just happens to put most of his focus into the NFL game as that's where he makes his living with CBS so he and Carton don't do much college sports. And to Carton's credit even as a Syracuse grad he's disgusted with Cuse basketball after the assistant coach sex scandal.

Benigno is great to listen to after a brutal Jets loss, he is just crushed like a 10 year old.

"Bro, bro, bro, bro....bro....bro, bro, bro....this franchise bro....bro....they're just never going to get it bro...."

Any truth, bro, to rumors of RU hosting a Joe Benigno bobblehead giveaway this season?

I believe that's the guy who called in after Mike had Ash on. He started to go into his UConn should have been selected rant but for once Mike immediately cut off the call. Loved it.

Carton and Rossi was probably my favorite show of all time on 101.5 afternoon
When Carton left to join Boomer at WFAN I got Sirius.
I liked listening to Joe B. on the overnights (I use to work midnights), but I do not have the time to listen to Sports talk shows anymore.
Joe B. got 3 pages on a Rutgers Football board...If he knew this, he would probably make more negative comments on RU.
