If the rumors are true, and you are beside yourself with anger and disbelief, and considering or have decided to not renew your season tickets, what can Flood do to redeem himself?
And no, resigning or anything along those lines is not an option.

A clean year off the field?--no arrests or off the field issues.
Improved performance on the field--what standard?

Markt Dantonio was 6-7 in his third year at Michigan State in 2009. Lost to Central Michigan.

At the beginning of the 2009 season, Dantonio immediately reinstated Glenn Winston, who had served four months in jail for assault. He received a 180-day jail sentence in April after pleading guilty to misdemeanor aggravated assault and misdemeanor assault and battery. "Glenn has done everything that he's been asked to do from a judicial and a team standpoint," head coach Mark Dantonio said in a prepared statement. "He has paid the penalty for his actions -- publicly, legally and athletically -- and he worked hard to maintain his academic eligibility while doing so. We regret the entire incident, however at this time, it is important that we support Glenn socially, academically and athletically. He still has a lot of work to do."

In response to criticism, "I support Mark Dantonio's request to reinstate Glenn Winston," athletic director Mark Hollis said in a prepared statement. "Glenn has much work to do, however, the athletics department will not turn its back on this young man. I am supportive of all student-athletes that are a part of our program. We will move forward and continue to support A.J. Sturges and Glenn with all the resources available to us."

A few months later in the season, 13 players (and former players) were reportedly part of an assault at Rather Hall on campus, leading to charges being filed against nine MSU football players. One of the players was Glenn Winston. He went to jail again. Of the nine charged, two - Glenn Winston and Roderick Jenrette - were dismissed permanently from the team by coach Mark Dantonio on Nov. 24. Both had previously received second chances, Winston after serving nearly four months in jail on a misdemeanor assault conviction. The incident took place after a fraternity potluck dinner in the MSU dormitory, about 90 minutes after the football team's awards banquet.

Imagine this happening at Rutgers?

Dantonio has become a legend. He is gunning to win 11 games in 5 of 6 seasons since then. What if they ran him out of town in 2009?

No, I am not suggesting Kyle Flood is Mark Dantonio.

Can Flood redeem himself? I would say that in relation to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the answer most likely is yes, as to the majority of the posters on this board, probably not.

I'd argue that the incident you mentioned at MSU already occurred at Rutgers, albeit on a smaller scale. Peele and Barnwell were both given second chances after previous arrests.

As for answering your question: nothing can truly redeem Flood in my eyes, based on his actions and body of work up to this point. But, I would begrudgingly accept his continued coaching tenure if he stayed and won the B1G East division next season, or better.

Original scenario is invalid as a comparison. Dantonio had success at the head coach position prior to MSU. Flood was a subpar position coach prior to getting the head gig at RU.

People can change. They have to want that. One must admit they were wrong. People also win lotteries.

Sure. He has until February to sign 4 of the top ten NJ kids for 2016.

Other than that it's just hopeless curb stompings & crappy OOCs.
MSU Recruiting Classes
2007- #42
2008- #47
2009- #17
2010- #30
--------
Did not look promising for MSU with those recruiting classes going into 2010.

Not saying we will do the same, but no need to be so glum.

He cannot recruit, he cannot coach, he cannot even keep the kids eligible and the program out of trouble. How is any of that going to change?

18-17 at 3 seasons in Cincinnati and a 4-7 season was "success."

More success than this:

"Prior to 2005, the NCAA didn't list sacks allowed in its national statistics. But since the NCAA began tracking that stat no team has allowed more sacks per game in one season than Rutgers in 2010 (61 in 12 games, or 5.08 per game) did with current head coach Kyle Flood mentoring the unit as offensive line coach."

How many of those MSU recruits were Michigan kids who played together growing up for 10 years & how many were a ragtag group of national recruits thrown together at the last minute?

Body of work

After a 7-0 start in 2012 with Greg Schiano's players and a real DC, we are 20-23 under Flood. That includes an 8-5 year with RF at OC.

Note: Without RF, RS and the 2012 team, Flood is 10-14. His body of work suggests he is a subpar HC and our current staff is subpar too. Does anyone think we would have been 8-5 last year with BM as OC? 4-8 or 5-7 is more like it without RF.

I guess you did not like my answer so you moved the goal posts.

A lot of you guys are pretty wound up. Surprised on an objective level, you can't see how Dantonio would have been fired or run out of town in 2009 if what transpired was at Rutgers.

czxqa, you are right on the money. let me add that he cant ever beat a good team. I cant believe this guy might come back. what the hell is wrong with RU ?

To answer the OP's question, I say no, he cannot redeem himself. I mainly believe that Flood does not have the same pedigree D'Antonio did when he was hired at MSU...no proven track record to indicate success over the long term.

I'd like to know the OP's answer to the question he posed.

Uhhhh. 4-7 was the first year Cincinnati was in the Big East.
In his third year at UC ( the team's second year in the Big East) he went 8-5.
Dantonio Recruiting and player development at UC set the stage for Brian Kelly's first year with the Bearcats going 11-2.
Anyone comparing Flood to Dantonio has to be on Drugs.

If we brought in the #17 class last year and had the #30 class lined up this year we might have some optimism about a turnaround. We were #53 in 2015, and likely to end around the same area or worse by the time Feb comes around. We are currently #44 with lots of teams that are "behind" us almost assuredly poised to leapfrog us as they fill up their classes.

Fair enough. The answer is yes.
Go 1-0 eight times next year, with only one blowout.
Show some flexibility at QB position.
Fire a coordinator for underperforming.
Show the fans you are growing, and that 2015 was just a bad year all around.

If he's our coach next year, I am not going to sit around sulking about it. I'll get behind him and the team. Will I be enthusiastically behind him? No-more like warily behind him. Is that OK with you?

Perfectly fine with me. To each his own (which includes those more frustrated than you).

Umm, that was not my intent. It was just something I noticed about Dantonio after looking him up. No, Flood is not in the same league as Dantonio. But by an objective measure, Dantonio would have more likely than not been run out of Rutgers in 2009. If I cannot get one person to admit that in this thread, I will be amazed.
And no, that does not take the heat off Flood. Heat should be on, and he should be on a short leash.

Moved the goal posts? The question is whether Flood could redeem himself. My answer is "no". He never deserved a shot as head coach in the first place because he was a disappointing position coach.
I can see how Dantonio would have been fired or run out of town in 2009. He probably should have been. So what? You're assuming that his replacement wouldn't have produced even better results than Dantonio. For all we know they could have won a championship with his replacement.

what is this mancrush some posters have on Flood that they cant just let go and try to come up with scenerios that make him more palpable to the fanbase. Let it go already. There is enough evidence to convict the guy..we don't need more.

if the horrible news is that he comes back well I could see people trying to rally around 6-6 next year as success...it makes me sick actually that people are so willing to accept mediocrity is some small hope a leopard can change its spots. Flood is a dud.

Fair enough. Truthfully, I don't have a lot of hope for Flood next year. But I am not going to piss and moan about it here. Expect the worst, and hope for the best for our players and our alma mater.

I will admit that RU panics under scandal....and he would likely have been shown the door, because our administration doesn't have the stomach for dealing with negative press. That said, I havent lost faith in KF because of the trumped up email scandal. I have lost faith because of lack of improvement in recruiting, player development, and play on the field.

No. But you never know, just when we think he couldn't possibly be any dumber, he will probably go and do something like start Hicks at Safety …and totally redeem himself!

I understand and appreciate that Knight Shift. I just kept looking and thinking, "OK, done that, done that, done that, -- hey, we should be great!"

no mancrush and not accepting mediocrity.
So what are you going to do next football season?
I'm renewing. And I will hope for the best, despite not being optimistic.
