If the rumors are true, and you are beside yourself with anger and disbelief, and considering or have decided to not renew your season tickets, what can Flood do to redeem himself?
And no, resigning or anything along those lines is not an option.
A clean year off the field?--no arrests or off the field issues.
Improved performance on the field--what standard?
Markt Dantonio was 6-7 in his third year at Michigan State in 2009. Lost to Central Michigan.
At the beginning of the 2009 season, Dantonio immediately reinstated Glenn Winston, who had served four months in jail for assault. He received a 180-day jail sentence in April after pleading guilty to misdemeanor aggravated assault and misdemeanor assault and battery. "Glenn has done everything that he's been asked to do from a judicial and a team standpoint," head coach Mark Dantonio said in a prepared statement. "He has paid the penalty for his actions -- publicly, legally and athletically -- and he worked hard to maintain his academic eligibility while doing so. We regret the entire incident, however at this time, it is important that we support Glenn socially, academically and athletically. He still has a lot of work to do."
In response to criticism, "I support Mark Dantonio's request to reinstate Glenn Winston," athletic director Mark Hollis said in a prepared statement. "Glenn has much work to do, however, the athletics department will not turn its back on this young man. I am supportive of all student-athletes that are a part of our program. We will move forward and continue to support A.J. Sturges and Glenn with all the resources available to us."
A few months later in the season, 13 players (and former players) were reportedly part of an assault at Rather Hall on campus, leading to charges being filed against nine MSU football players. One of the players was Glenn Winston. He went to jail again. Of the nine charged, two - Glenn Winston and Roderick Jenrette - were dismissed permanently from the team by coach Mark Dantonio on Nov. 24. Both had previously received second chances, Winston after serving nearly four months in jail on a misdemeanor assault conviction. The incident took place after a fraternity potluck dinner in the MSU dormitory, about 90 minutes after the football team's awards banquet.
Imagine this happening at Rutgers?
Dantonio has become a legend. He is gunning to win 11 games in 5 of 6 seasons since then. What if they ran him out of town in 2009?
No, I am not suggesting Kyle Flood is Mark Dantonio.
