Carino on Derek Simpson

Wouldn't it work the other way. That is, the new transfer rules make it so that every player is a risk at some level to transfer after one year--in fac,t after any year. So the long-term reliability gap between traditional one-year players and other players shrinks somewhat. Maybe not a lot, but it shrinks. So overall you're more willing to take a traditional one year guy.

Only the first transfer is free. If (to pick a random example) Aundre Hyatt transferred this year, he'd have to sit out at his new school.

Is Simpson scoring enough points now for that one poster?
Nope sorry. I watched a friend of mine having these type of games as a freshman. And he avg 35 ppg as senior against that weak south jersey competition. He would completely crush Simpson on both ends of the floor. He went on to be a solid guard in the Big East. Its levels to this. The only reason Simpson is going to a high major - is because our coach sucks at recruiting and this is the best he can do now

I have to give our fans credit. They've adjusted to Pike's thinking.. Some of our fans are actually excited about the Simpson & Woolfolk recruiting class. I just can't get excited about almost an entire roster being projects n fixer uppers. We're getting close to that being a reality

He never promised us he'd be bringing in highly-rated, ready-made players as freshmen. Of course, with the transfer portal, things have changed mightily since he first set foot on the banks.

From his introductory press conference:

Q. Steve, how do you do it? How do you win? How do you dance?

COACH PIKIELL: That question's been asked at five of the stops. I think what's going to happen here, and it's going to happen quickly, we're going to make players better. I think that's very important. We develop the total player. It's not how good you are when you arrive, it's how good you are when you leave. We're going to hire a great staff first and foremost. Your staff is always the most important thing you do. I'm going to take time with that process and do it right. Once you have your staff, you have your staff. We're going to be thoughtful about each piece we put together. We're going to get to work with our guys. We started the other day. I think they understand a little bit more about me. I love to win. I love guys in the gym. We got to change that culture a bit here. But we're going to be very smart about how we attack the problems and how we solve them. I'm very excited. I've done this. I've been there as a player. I lived through the transformation. I've done it at four stops. I would have had to do it at five stops, six stops. I told him, I'm going to go somewhere else and do it again, so this is the time, hire me now, and we're going to do some exciting things.

I know it's not going to be easy. I told him still that I embrace that. We play in a great league with great universities. We're right there with them. Now we're going to build a great basketball program. It takes time and it takes patience. It takes getting a guy like Jameel Warney to get better and to improve. We can accomplish a lot of great things together.

You have zero clue how Simpson will be and trying to compare him to your “friend” is moronic.

Interesting. Thanks for that. I think that the general notion stil remains true. Free transfers shrink, to some extent, the reliability gap between tradtional one-year players and others. It doesn't widen it.

It's sports. I've always compared players to others. Im guessing you don't? So weird lol

Comparing a 17/18 year old kid (who I’m guessing you’ve probably never watched live, or if so very little live) to one of your “friends” only because they played in the same region of the state (who knows when or where your friend even played) is stupid.

And on top of it, drawing some type of strong conclusion on the comparison is even more stupid.

Unless you want to tell us who your “friend” was so we can watch the tape on him and all compare together?

Let’s keep this thread positive, the kid hasn’t even stepped foot on campus as a student yet.

Its not even about comparing him just to my friend. Bc as an athlete myself I kno alot of athletes, and not just in my age group. Guy posted Simpson scoring 34 pts - like that is supposed to be impressive or something. I just mentioned my friend who is a guard who played in SJ avg 35 a game. He's not the only D1 player I kno from SJ. And if your a legit high major D1 ball player in SJ - you are levels above everyone else. Scoring 25 a night is something u can do in your sleep. Simpson doesn't level out on the eye test to legit high major D1 ball players. Its why Bowling Green was his best offer. And I'm not putting any names out of ppl I know. A long time ago- but I got kicked off this website in the past for doing that

I know a guy who knows a guy who knows another guy who is better than your guy.

Just throwing it out there.

This is just silly because it depends on what program they are playing in......

Lol ok guy.

I don’t think anyone is stopping you from telling us who your “friend” was, especially if he was actually a NJ high school basketball player who averaged 35 points a game. This is not against board rules.

Now I know you’re full of crap.

Cool. Keep this same energy and mindset when we win 8-10 games next yr. We'll see how much talent matters very soon

I bet you don't have an athletic bone in your body. I can tell

Hahaha ok I remember him quite well. He played for Schalick.

Overall I agree South Jersey basketball is nowhere near the level of North Jersey but I can tell you the level of completion Lenape plays is much, much better than Schalick so I think your comparison breaks down right there.

Let's see what happens.....

Can you be more half empty.

Will Derek Simpson be tasked with scoring 35 points or be tasked to be a point guard who can control the game and allow others to play off the ball and score. I think this will help McConnell and Mulcahy to post up inside.

Except Schalick played in Christmas tournaments n etc against tough competition. Lenape is not playing good except Camden. SJ competition is terrible

Christmas tournaments? So 1-2 games a year lol! Schalick’s completion is trash I’ll give you that.

Guy you’re literally writing off Simpson because of the high school he goes to which is funny because Lenape or the competition they faced didn’t stop Jason Thompson from being drafted in the first round of the NBA.

If you want to critique Simpson next year based off his play when he enrolls thats cool but you sound like a dunce writing him off because he’s from South Jersey and your friend Paul Gause fizzled out.

I'm not writing Simpson off bc of his high school. But I do see why Bowling Green was his top offer - until Pike failed to get the players he really wanted. Once again Simpson only had his one High major offer - bc the coach failed in his recruiting efforts

By sending this reply you are writing him off. Go follow Seton Hall....and Paul Gause's career overseas.

Simpson’s an RU guy now as far as I’m concerned, and if coach believes in him and the kid wants to play here, then that’s a good start. If he can be a quick point guard for us who can dish and shoot, then that’s even better, and I’m happy to have him for next year, even if he comes off the bench at first. Any board criticism can wait until we see the results.

Lenape is Group IV and are currently rated the # 4 team in all of NJ. THey did beat Elizabeth last year in the final game of the season in Elizabeth. Elizabeth has been among the Top teams in NJ for the last 3 years and will play Elizabeth again soon but this time at Lenape. I would not write Lenape or Simpson off just because South Jersey basketball might not be as good as North Jersey. The Crispins from South Jersey did pretty well for themselves. I think Derek will have a decent career.

HS players can put up numbers and not be D1 material. I did. I led the conference with 23ppg...

But discounting Simpson just bc he plays for Lenape and not some prep school is dumb. If you want to talk about actual concerns from his tape, that's different

He looks like a player. Has some talent for sure. Fans always one these blue chip sure fire freshman starting studs but there just aren't too many of them out there and the blue bloods scoop them up

This.

People are more than welcome to be critical of recruiting overall but this thread was meant to be a positive one about an incoming kid who’s having a pretty darn good senior year.

I think Simpson will be our best player as a So. He has a ton of potential on tape and playing against stronger competition all summer and adding muscle will only help. Look at a picture of many of the RU Seniors as freshmen and many have the same build as Simpson. He's smooth on the ball, has a good shot, and always plays composed. With Miller as the defensive option with a season of experience and Simpson as a floor general, the PG spot should be in decent hands over the next few years IF they can find good wings and a big man that can replace Omoruyi as I think he leaves after his Jr year. The key is if can Hyatt/Jones become a 15ppg wing player in order to make the system work.

I am glad that Jerry Carino just put up an article raving about Lenape's Simpson who will be on RU next season. Many on this site have been ripping our recruiting for next season's class but I have raved about Simpson for months. He made All State last year as a junior and led his team to a huge win over Elizabeth at Elizabeth last year. Just because a guy is not ranked as a Top 100 player doesn't mean he isn't very good. I hope someone can link the article here and that maybe some who are not supporting our guys and keep ripping Steve and our staff on recruiting just might become more passionate about RU. That would be a nice change.
This rates a victory lap.

I have multiple post where I said, ultimately I think Simpson will end up being good player. But now if Simpson struggles from here on out, and I pull this back up, I'm jerk lol. Do you know how many players have had good games at, Rutgers and went on to do ultimately nothing? I could give you a long list

You’re a clown poster and if you don’t believe so just look at your posts on this thread. You’re boy that played college ball needs you to rebound for him in whatever non-descript league that nobody cares about. You have no past, present or future in talent evaluation and I suggest you keep your thoughts to yourself because you clearly are out of touch with reality.

There’s a saying that goes: better to have people think you’re an idiot than to write your thoughts down for all the public to read to then remove all doubt.

GO RU

Bro it was one game where he played very well for a freshman.

Can’t get too caught up in the one game.

Temple: 33 mins, 9.1% FG, 4 points
Rider: 28 mins, 33.3% FG, 8 points
CCSU: 21 mins, 83.3% FG, 14 points
Miami: 10 mins, 33.3% FG, 2 points
Indiana: 26 mins, 38.5% FG, 14 points

Can we just let the kids career play out before we anoint this kid a legend or a dumpster fire?

All of these kids have the ability to have a big game, but that’s not what proves how good a guys career is. It’s all about consistency.

Can he consistently have nights like IU or will we see more Temple nights?

Time will tell.

@satnom is the same guy that said Paul Mulcahy shouldn't be our starting point guard this year. Thats all you need to know about his basketball sense
