9ers have fired 2 coaches in a row after only 1 year as Head Coach.

Looks like some college team is salivating right now.

Kelly was fired by Eagles with a couple years left on contract. Now 49ers fire him with 4 years left.

Barchi blew it. If he was not so impatient and kept Flood for another year:
1. We would have won more games last season.
2. We would be naming Chip Kelly as head coach.

Maybe we can get him to work as co-OC to show Drew the ropes.

This post makes no sense, was that the intention? Drew who?

Of course since money was not an issue at all in the last search for a head coach.o_O

What makes you think money was an issue in the last coaching search? The reason Mark Richt wasn't hired by us, or UVA for that matter, wasn't money. Beyond that, I am prettty sure we got who we wanted.

I'm not as big a follower of the NFL as I used to be but seems like that might be his last shot as HC in the NFL, no? Would he be considered for OC in the NFL?

If that's the case I wonder if that staunch stance against a return to college still in effect? I'm guessing he'd consider going back, just a matter of where he may land.

Where's he going to show Drew the ropes at UT. Lol

I could totally see Notre Dame backing up the Brinks truck to get Chip and
Helfrich. That would be absolutely amazing to see.

Well he's a bit of an A-hole so I don't think there is a future in broadcasting. He's getting paid a lot of money for the next 4-ish years. Maybe he coaches in HS for free somewhere and enjoys his money? If he goes back to college I expect he'll lose his NFL money. No?

I could see him take a year off do whatever, take a break or take it easy at a HS like you say.

As to the contractual issues, it depends on the language of each individual contract but I think it's more the norm that if you take a new coaching job the old salary will just be offset by the amount of the new salary.

I mean why would an NFL team care if he takes a HC job in college. He won't be competing against them. In addition, why would they mind a college paying him a salary and reducing the amount of money they owe him. It actually saves money for the team. I'm pretty sure Schiano was still in the last year of the contract the Bucs owed him but he still came back to be a DC at OSU. I think ND only recently got out of the contract they owed Weis and he coached in the NFL as OC/Florida as OC/Kansas as HC all during that time if I'm not mistaken.

I can't say it's universal but I think some type of offset is more the norm and wouldn't stop a coach from taking a job. He'll still likely get his money from his former employer minus any offset. Les Miles is owed a lot from LSU but he was actively searching for a job this offseason. Brady Hoke took the DC job at Oregon after Michigan.

Thanks for the clarification. So yeah, welcome to ND.

This was not on Kelly. Eddie DeBartolo's sister owns the team now and put her idiot son Jed York in charge. He's fired three coaches and at least one GM in three years, and created the most poisonous atmosphere at any NFL franchise. Ever.
Who fires both Harbaugh and Chip Kelly? The Niners are going to be awful for a very, very long time.

Although I don't pay much attention, I have followed enough to know they've been mismanaged. I thought they'd regret getting rid of Harbaugh. After floundering for quite a while he took them to NFC championships and a Super Bowl and helped turn around someone who was looking like a #1 overall bust at the time. It smelled of ego issues to me. If you're an owner and you have a coach who may be a big ego or eccentric, as long as he's performing let him do his thing. One subpar season shouldn't have taken him down.

The guy they replaced him with Jim Tomsula seemed even weirder than Harbaugh. At the time after seeing highlights of his press conference I was thinking this was what you come up with really? I used to be a big Raiders fan who has become an apathetic/pedestrian fan (both of the NFL and the Raiders) over the years and it just reminded me of when they brought Art Shell back and he hired Tom Walsh as OC who was running a bed and breakfast in Idaho at the time IIRC.

As to Kelly, the management might be lousy but does he get a pass like Lane Kiffin did after Al Davis to land HC job after HC job? In college definitely not a problem given his track record but the NFL? I wonder if he will get a 3rd shot even if you might think this past year almost doesn't count.

Supposedly a lot of the blame can be placed at the feet of the (now former) GM, Trent Baalke. There's a report that instead of Tomsula last year, they had a deal in place to hire Adam Gase and Baalke went to York and convinced him to squash it.

Also, most of the team was built well before Baalke and Harbaugh arrived. Since then, Baalke drafted horribly, and signed very few free agents that made an impact. In fact, rumors are that Chip Kelly was pushing very hard to get Dak Prescott, but Baalke shot it down.

He is getting paid a ton of money not to do anything. He says he doesn't want to go back to college football. He said he rather be an OC in the NFL before doing that.

Unfortunately, Mommy and Daddy put their 28 year old son in charge of the franchise in 2008, and it's been downhill ever since.
This was posted yesterday on Fox Sports, and frankly, it's one of the kinder pieces written in the past two days...

OK but that article doesn't actually say anything, other than blaming Jed without really saying why they think he's at fault.

Because he doesn't like dealing with alums and chasing 17 year olds. Rutgers is a perfect fit.
Alums aren't entitled assholes and we've got only one state school. "Kid stay home and I'll pad your stats and make you a rock star Heisman Candidate in the Philly/NJ/NYC area.....".

Back to reality! In Ash we trust!
