Basketball Cliff Omoruyi declares for NBA Draft, maintains eligibility

I think Cliff will have a spot in NBA. Just not this year... next year...
#1 thing he needs to work on is his mid jumpers. He starts hitting those, I think his stock raises big time, even get into 2nd rd next year. I think next year, he will be in running for B1G DPOY. He improved so much on defense from beginning of the season to end of the season.

IMHO, it’s more like NIL or NBA. Whoever can figure out how he can get NIL money will have a great shot with Cliff.
With his visa he has limited NIL money available is what I believe I read earlier this year.

I honestly don’t think he’s that close to being an NBA player. He doesn’t think the game fast enough on either side of the ball. He blocks shots and gets tons of dunks purely on his athleticism, but at the next level everyone is that athletic. If I were him I’d work on things in this order:

1. Pick and roll defense positioning
2. Rolling to the rim offensively - I think he takes less than effective angles which is why our offense doesn’t open up despite his threat around the rim
3. Offensive decision making

looks like cliff signed with an agent on Instagram, though not sure if it's for NIL or the NBA. Hope it doesn't affect his eligibility.

List of players invited last year
Buddy Boeheim 10 gms
Jamaree Bouyea 5 gms
Darius Days 4 gms
AJ Green 35 gms
Jordan Hall 9 gms
Quinton Jackson 9 gms
Kenneth Lofton Jr 24 gms
Tyrese Martin 16 gms
Jared Rhoden 14 gms
Vince Williams 15 gms

10 players on that list made. an NBA team.

Saw Caleb McConnell is invited to this camp as well.

I don't believe any of those guys were drafted though.
That's the question for Clif - does he want to stay in and potentially (likely) go undrafted then work through G League.
Or return for a year then go through all that later.

It was never could he get a shot in the G League.

This is the reminder that going undrafted is basically better than going in the second round. Second round deals are not guaranteed and you can somewhat control where you try and catch on

A bunch returned to school- Nance, Scheierman, Sasser, Abmas off the top of my head, so it's not really predictive of any future plans.

Cliff just needs to learn a move or two in the paint and some better touch around the basket. Maybe Eugene Omoruyi can teach him his go to low post move: the turnaround jumper drop step counter move.

No one cares about post moves anymore. Its way more important to improve his defensive instincts and the angles he takes on setting screens and rolls to the rim.

Yup and stuff like better handoffs and reading ball screens. Cliff is as mechanical as it gets on all that stuff. Zero recognition of how the defense is playing and no reads/reactions.

While I agree with you in some regard, he needs to be able to figure out how to score if he can't jump past/over a defender.

Nic Claxton is a similar type player to Cliff, but Clax can dribble off a fake handoff and run to the rim, he can also do a mini post up runner/jump hook. Until cliff gets more comfortable doing something other than a drop step/dunk he isn't pro ready.

Clax also looks a lot taller than Cliff

If Cliff is posting up he’s going to get benched. Look at the NBA. The player in the league he should be modeling after is Clint Capela. Roll man and defender, hang out in the dunker spot all day. He should never be posting up.

Cliff for sure can be a consistent shooter with continued work. He needs the MOST work on his ball handling coordination. Painfully evident is hands need consistency. "Post up" is a misnomer. Pivot agility and touch around the basket are lacking at this point.

I agree, when I say post up I don't mean your traditional post up call for the ball type move.

Its hard to explain over a message, but you see these guys who catch the ball, and kid of put their shoulder into the defenders body and hit a little moving jump hook. I can't really explain it but it's something we haven't seen Cliff do

I think what you mean is finish around the hoop, out to 5-8' or so, non-dunks, whether it's on basket cuts, lobs that he can't dunk, offensive rebounds, transition catches or whatever.
I agree, he needs to make shots other than dunks consistently - non-post up, non-jump shot type shots.

Cliff needs to work on his foot work. This is what is preventing him from becoming a good post player. He needs to coordinate everything above the waist with his foot work with the aim of squaring up to the basket.

No one cares about post moves anymore? Shocking how little some people know. If Pike doesn't care about post moves then why do we keep giving Cliff the ball there? We don't play in the NBA, we play in the Big 10 where post play matters. Dickenson and Edey are constantly asking for the ball on the block, and a post move doesn't have to be made from the block anyway. It can be made from further out.

Cliff, Edey, Dickinson - who are 3 guys whose teams either didn't make the NCAA tournament or lost in the first round?

Yup, they were the main reason their team didn’t perform. 🙄
Having your offense revolve around your center with his back to the basket is outdated.
that's where "no one cares about post moves anymore" came from

The biggest improvement the coaching staff could make this offseason is to modernize the offense. Part of that is to get away from the low-post game, unless there is a big mismatch to take advantage of.
