Coaching Carousel 2021

The waiting is the hardest part. . . .
Wonder how long Sark survives at Texas if they do badly again?

From an article in the Athletic:
The facilities are getting even better
In October, Oregon announced plans for a new 170,000-square-foot indoor practice facility. It’ll include an expanded weight room and be ready by 2024.

The Ducks have long had among the best facilities in the nation. They helped pioneer the facilities arms race. In case you thought they might fall behind the competition, that isn’t happening.

My guess is Oregon is going to make a run at an established P5 coach ala Kelly/Riley.

Best thread of the year, every year. @rutgersguy1 As always, job well done.
Thanks, you know I love this stuff and am junkie for it lol.

On that note, some news about Duke. Tony Elliott Clemson OC, Mike Elko A&M DC and Jason Garrett from the NFL discussed as possible for Duke. I know Elko was at WF but surprised he doesn't have his eyes on bigger fish than Duke. He's one I would've like here if we were looking but wasn't even sure if he'd be realistic. If he's looking at Duke then I think he probably would have been. Do wonder about his offensive philosophy though. Venables has done basically what I was hoping he would when I thought he could be a good candidate years ago...that is knowing the importance of productive offense. Hence him going after Lebby. Not so sure about Elko's mindset...came up with Clawson/Kelly but then also some time with Fisher who is a little more pro style. Elko is definitely an example of doing more with less though so he'd be the one I'd go after from those 3 candidates mentioned. Mullen is still out there too.

Think that's good hire for Venables. Interesting to see how Kiffin does without a Briles tree OC on his staff.

LSU AD so desperate to make a splash lol. If you didn't think most of these numbers were insane.

Wilcox at Cal
2017: 5-7/2-7
2018: 7-6/4-5
2019: 8-5/4-5
2020: 1-3/1-3
2021: 5-7/4-5

Cal is a tough place to win at. Sonny Dykes was:
2013: 1-11/0-9
2014: 5-7/3-6
2015: 28-5/4-5
2016: 5-7/3-6, and he got fired, not for his record but for interviewing.

Prior to Sonny Dykes, Cal had Jeff Tedford, who was 82-57/50-45 over 11 years 2002-12. He went 3-9/2-7 in his last year, with two blowout losses to end the year. Tedford left Cal with the most bowl wins (5), conference wins (50), and games coached (139) in the school's history. Cal produced 40 players drafted by the NFL, including eight first-round picks.
In his Wikipedia entry, it says: "In a letter to donors, Cal athletic director Sandy Barbour called a "great concern" the 48 percent graduation rate of football players at Cal who entered the school between 2002 and 2005; the rate was the lowest in the Pac-12."

Barbour is now the Penn State AD. Kind of a weird reason to throw in and fire a guy who had so much success on the field. But that's Cal for you, which is not very different from Rutgers in the way they treat/handle athletics.

Tedford went 26-14/16-8 at Fresno State 2017-19, before resigning for health reasons. Fresno State just rehired Tedford afte Kalen DeBoer took the Washington job.

The moral of the story is don't fire a coach after having one or two bad seasons or if the team does not make linear upward progress every year.

Tedford got a big win. Fresno was about to lose its qb Jake Haener to the portal to go to Washington following DeBoer. When Tedford was hired he decided to come back.

Wilcox has struggled putting together an offense there. He hired Beau Baldwin, a HC from the FCS level as his OC, a name I’ve brought up too as OC. He didn’t do so hot there and left to be HC at Cal Poly. Wilcox then hired Bill Musgrave and can’t say he’s done any better. He’s coached at Oregon before that’s why I think he’s getting a look. I think after seeing coaches leave they’re looking for West coast guys and familiar names to them.

Cal Poly- where Mike Leach got his start as an OL coach in 1987.

Hearing Temple decision by next Monday, looking at a couple of assistants located in Texas, not Fran Brown, which is good for us.

Any more details? Wasn't there a fantastic recruiter (OL or DL coach?) from Philly that went over with Rhule and Brown to Baylor?

But at least one local HS coach is lobbying for Fran.

Think I answered my own question--Elijah Robinson at Texas A&M?

And these guys have Fran Brown as #1.

Mentioned awhile back their AD came from Texas so Stan Drayton the Texas RB coach was a favorite. Texas A&M DL coach Elijah Robinson was also mentioned and he’s from this area too.

Beyond that no news I’ve seen of how it’s going with all the candidates.

Oregon looks desperate going after Kelly.
Even if he had a great run with them years ago, the college game caught up with his offense and his time a UCLA only started looking kike a winner this year , his fourth there

I’ve said before if I’m them I’d go for the Chip Kelly’s of today like Josh Heupel or Jeff Lebby. If they leave so what as long as they can win big and who knows if they would leave.

Give them the budget to hire a top DC and let them do their thing on offense.

To bad Chris Petersen is burnt out and being a HC again not on the table at this time,
he'd be a great choice for the Ducks.
But I bet Oregon reached out to him and were told not interested

I have a feeling Elliott will stay at Clemson one more year unless the Cavaliers offer a long deal .
