Coaching Carousel 2021

UTSA offensive coordinator Barry Lunney, Jr., is a strong candidate for the position, sources say. We're told Lunney is in Champaign now.

Conference USA championship this fall and record a program-best 12-2 record. The Roadrunners 11th in scoring offense at 36.9 points per game, racking up 3,500 yards through the air and 2,500 on the ground.

UTSA's dream season included a win over Illinois

He did a good job at Army. I thought he might be a potentially good hire but it is different planning defense with Army's plodding offense vs UNC's fast pace one.
The ACC seems to have morphed into the Big 12, all offense, no defense. Except for maybe Clemson (and maybe Pitt?). 9 schools allowing more than 25 points per game (B1G only 4); and 5 allowing more than 30 ppg.

B12 actually had some solid to very good defenses this year. Ok State's DC just got hired at OSU. ISU's Heacock also has been good and has been mentioned for some openings. Baylor has been solid. I think KSU/WVU maybe not too bad either.

Yeah, I was going to say the "old Big 12." I took a peek at their numbers, but still, 5/10 teams give up 25 ppg or more, including Oklahoma.
Big 12 has 10 teams; B1G has 14 teams. WTF is up with that? 😉

Guess at least one fan is not on upset alert?

Heckuva head coach at Siena - 5-35. Siena has/had football?
That would have been when Hafley was playing at Siena. Siena was D3 for football and then they were in the group of schools Forced to go 1AA when NCAA changed the rules. They dropped football for a matter of weeks in late 90’s and then alumni raised money to bring it back. Survived a few more years before pulling the plug. Happened to a lot of the MAAC schools

Good eye! Hafley was there from 1997-2000. Bateman coached from 2000-2003, going 0-11 in his last year. Never heard of Bateman, but finally found a guy with a worse HC record than Ash! Don't know much about Siena, other than they sometimes (maybe more frequently) have a decent mens' hoops team.

Small private school just outside Albany. Good basketball, at times great basketball.
Paul Hewitt
Louis Orr
Fran MacCaffrey
Have all coached there. I had some friends who played there. When they are good they get huge crowds at the Times Union center.

Seems like a solid hire, and hope he does not Wilt under pressure. 😉 Minnesota getting picked apart by B1G East teams looking to ascend. Indiana also had a strong recruiting class, with 7 recruits from Florida and 2 from Texas. Don't expect their dropoff to last long.

So who are among Freeman’s top candidates? Multiple sources tell FootballScoop that Iowa State defensive coordinator Jon Heacock, Auburn defensive coordinator Derek Mason, Tennessee defensive coordinator Tim Banks, current Jacksonville Jaguars safeties coach and former college defensive coordinator Chris Ash, and current Cincinnati Bengals linebackers coach Al Golden, the former Miami and Temple head coach are all under consideration and that Freeman also is holding some options close to the vest.

I like Heacock out of those names.
They seem to be targeting the guy I thought might be good.

Saw Kelly's DC resigned in the last few days. He's been stubbornly staying by him, might have been a sticking point to an extension and now it's out of the way.

I’ve been seeing that, a whole revamp of the defensive staff. If they can get the defense going with their very productive offense then the playoffs and even championship are back in play.
Serious, non-ballbusting question- might Chris Ash be in the mix for DC? Read an article one of the hires (forget name) worked with Ash at Jacksonville.
