Conference Tournaments Discussion Thread

Sell outs. Given the parity this year any team felt they could win it. Villanova’s two national championships and the quality of play have insured that MSG will continue to be the home of the BET.

Sellouts in name or number

Do tix go for as much as they used to?

Thursday was a near sellout in number. All but the highest level at the garden was completely full for the 6:30 and 9:30 games. Yesterday’s tickets were each $200 in section 107. Our tickets are at will call tonight. I don’t know their face value yet.

In crunch time the two Michigan teams show their superiority in coaching and talent.Michigan will be playing for their third straight league championship.

Lotta energy and buzz outside the Garden tonight. The BE is about urban BB only schools and no better place to have the final than MSG. Add the conference history and now being a FOX MCBB centerpiece ...just a good fit.

Good matchup. Should be exciting

Where are all the guys on this board who ripped Rick Barnes and that Shaka Smart was the seconding coming? Funny how fortunes changed.

What if it was Xaver vs Marquette
Who knows, but there were a ton of MU fans in the building last night. Can you image if SJU made a final?

A lot of the Midwestern teams fans see this as a vacation to New York City. If there team keeps winning, great; if not, sightseeing.

Fox does a great job with this tournament . The coverage is top notch. They even use the old NBA on NBC music .

Bowling Green about to lose. Last time in tournament Lew Alcindor was playing.

Washington v Oregon May have set the game of basketball back 50 years. Stunned at how poor. At a bar so didn’t hear Bill Walton but perhaps the worst display of championship basketball I have ever seen.

I turned it off when he called Oregon one of the greatest of time teams.(actually just tired of hoops for the day.)

And obviously this year it is down....trend or blip?

Slippage was never going to happen right away...slow erosion
Bac, look a little deeper. SHU, Xavier, MU, SJU, Providence return just about their entire rotations. The league has a great group of recruits coming in. BE lost a ton of talent last year (VU had four first round picks). That BET was great from start to finish, sold out and ratings.

One thing missing...The league needs to have ranked rivalries. A history of close and exciting games. That remains to be seen. Xavier/Butler? Georgetown/SJU? SHU/Villanova have now played a series of last second exciting BET games. If SHU can continue the momentum (four straight NCAA’s), and be ranked, that gets one rivalry. Agree that the league cannot be as credible if it’s just VU and everyone else.

Man is this michigan msu championship game physical. After going to the BE tourney the past couple days and now watching the big ten tourney man oh man is one thing obvious, the big east has turned into a soft finesse conference while the big ten is a conference of brawlers. Will be interesting if any big ten and BE teams match up. outside of Iowa, the big ten teams will just maul the BE teams

I also thought the Big East would erode. I no longer think so. There is a place for mostly Catholic metro schools who prioritize basketball over football and other sports. Some high level players will always want to go to these smaller schools and play against some local high-level teams. I imagine it must be pretty cool to be a big man on campus there too. Playing in the Garden doesn’t hurt either.

Very good post. The way I see it since the last exodus is that Villanova has been carrying the entire conference. The Big East needs other schools to be consistent top 25 squads and to challenge Villanova and establish rivalries to flourish.

The Big East brand name is enormous especially in the NYC metro area. However the league needs other squads to step up and be consistent top 25 squads as Villanova has been carrying the league.

So he went down and cried like a little girl for what will amount to a bad sprain? I mean, were allowed to make fun of him if thats the case right?

Wow. It was so dramatic because of his reaction. Don’t want to make fun but I thought the same thing. He was absolutely wailing. Wishing him the best but kind of embarrassed for him at the same time.

Of course the team wearing green would win today. And Rory won the players championship.

Msu lucks out. Ref should have called the foul against Winston when he actively put both hands on and tried to foul Poole. Not saying it would have been a shooting foul but a foul nonetheless.

Kid's been through a lot injury wise and thought his career might have been over. The descriptions are softball-sized swelling so the pain might have been a little more than your typical high ankle sprain.

The pain + fear can cause unusual reactions
