Crown Tournament - NIT Discussion

I guess saying a bunch of our players need to study for finals in a few weeks isn't good enough reason to avoid travelling across 3 time zones and missing a week of school in a meaningless tournament no one wants to play in.

Students don't get 6 figure salaries. These guys are professional athletes. I think you're more worried about it than they are.

When the ball is thrown up for a tip off I am watching. It's reality TV/media at its best. No one knows the outcome

People are bitching about this made for TV Vegas tourney but without TV and the $ the Ncaa tournament wouldn't exist. The TV world rules the roost , Schools acting like they can ignore that are so hypocritical. They all want to get into the Ncaas and want the $, Face it all the games they play are made for TV. Their uniforms ,sneakers, you name it are paid for by TV money.

Bracket for crown isn’t out yet. I’m wondering if they can’t fill a field because of scheduling. NIT only has two P4 teams so I think we may be learning that in this era it’s the big dance or pack it in for the year and get to work on the portal.

The plan all along was to release a Crown bracket today (Monday).

I've seen a couple teams say they accepted bids there (UCF being one I forget the others).

As bad as the season has gone, I'd like to see the season continue with the Crown Tournament or possibly the NIT.

Let's assume the following teams are invited to the NIT:
Ohio State 17-15
Indiana 19-13
Nebraska 17-14

That means the top 2 remaining teams get selected for the Crown:
Northwestern 17-16
Iowa 17-16

That leaves these teams available for at-large Crown births:
Penn State 16-15
USC 16-17
Minnesota 15-17
Rutgers 15-17

While unfair to PSU who has a winning record, I would think RU would get the nod over the rest of the group because of Ace and Dylan.

A weird quirk with the Crown is the first game is a week AFTER the transfer portal opens. What do you do if half of your roster is in the portal? This could help RUs cause since you would still be able to field a team with Ace, Dylan, Acuff, Hayes, Martini and anyone else that doesn't enter the portal.
No it’s shut down thank god

I just looked at the NIT field and unless I missed something, there isn't a single Big 10 team. I guess the Crown will have at least two but it seems pretty clear that in the NIL era, if they aren't in the big dance, these kids are more interested in protecting their health than playing.

Say what you want about the Women's program being in disarray. But by accepting an NIT bid, they show that at least they want to play.

And let's acknowledge Destiny Adams on the RU women's team, who gave 100% in every game and went from a UNC bench player to a likely WNBA draft pick.

Unfortunately, her brother Darius is going to play for UConn.

Found this on the Boise State site

Each team in the semifinals receives $50,000 in NIL money to disperse amongst the players. That number goes up to $100,000 if you reach the finals and $300,000 if you win the tournament.

1. That isn't a ton of money
2. Who and what determines that allocation?

So basically $500,000 to be paid to 4 teams.

So if Rutgers was in the tournament and lost in semifinals and got $50,000.

Who would be the person in charge of allocating the money?
What would the allocation look like?

PLEASE LET PUT ALL OF THESE DETAILS OUT IN THE OPEN!

Interesting quote in this article about Ohio State not participating in the Crown Tournament.

"The Buckeyes declined their invitation to participate in FOX's College Basketball Crown Tournament on Monday, ending their 2024-25 season. They are contractually prohibited from participating in any postseason tournament other than the NCAA Tournament or the Crown."

I wonder if everyone in the Big Ten has the same deal?

Ohio State and Crown

Certainly.

They are contractually prohibited from participating in any postseason tournament other than the NCAA Tournament or the Crown."
This would explain why there are no Big 10 teams in the NIT. The lack of interest by the other Big 10 eligible teams was a boon to schools like GW and Georgetown.

That would be an interesting deal - let’s say it’s true. The NIT is owned by the NCAA now. So, a television partner can now have say about a team, above the sanctioning body? That is, we (TV) forbid you to play in your sanctioning body’s event… wild, and a true sign of the times in college sports, and where the power actually lies.
