Rutgers came into the season having gone 7-40 in its last 47 games. Rutgers is now 3-0 under Pike. Wins are to be enjoyed at this point in the rebuild. The competition has been week but each game has featured tougher quiz. Winning on the road against a Big East sister of the poor isnt all that impressive on the surface but for this program to do it shows some tangible evidence of improvement results wise right away. I had the De Paul game down as a loss earlier in the season because I thought De Paul would be okay (and they are terrible) and I thought RU would still be in struggling trying to find their way. From what I saw in the first two games I knew that RU had a good shot to win this game.

Rutgers flat out dominated the game. They crushed De Paul in rebounds 46-27 including a decisive 28-8 edge in the first half when RU set the tone that they were in control. What is interesting is that RU found a way to not only win but to dominate when they were not exactly shooting well (only 39% and 25% from 3). To me that was the biggest takeaway from last night. Under Pike we know have an active team that will crash the boards and scramble for the loose boards. Second chance points were big league last night. There are plenty of successful teams that are not great shooting teams. They have to do it in other way such as rebounding, defense, hustling and foul shooting. Pike is really instilling in this team that work ethic. Foul shooting...are you kidding me 23-29...and at one point it was 15-16 I think. That sheer number of times to the line is showing some of the strategy and aggressiveness this team is showing on the court to draw fouls without causing fouls.

Another takeaway is teamwork. I would say this was another team effort where everyone seemed to chip in on one point or another. Thats a testament to Pikiell's coaching. He just cannot rely on Sanders to do everything. Others must develop and be given their roles. I thought Sanders had his best game this year on both sides of the ball. I think Mike Williams gave a yeomens effort and brought energy and intensity. Shooting wise only Freeman who had a very active first half and Williams shot over 50% but again thats what I alluded to before, the team found away to play together and win and do all the other things rebounding wise and defensively to overcome poor shooting. I dont think any player had over 28 minutes and that speaks to options and depth. I love that Sa got 24 minutes and I believe drained a 3. Doorson got more time yesterday which is going to be needed to help Gettys who gets winded. Johnson didnt play particularly well but Williams picked up the slack.

As for the game getting under double digits at the end....I wasnt worried at all and usually I am. RU had built enough cushion and there is nothing wrong with a let up at the end from a team who isnt familiar with playing with leads of any kind. I am sure Pike will be able to teach some things of what they were doing wrong in the last 5 minutes.

But no dont start going overboard and peg this as a NIT team just yet. Remember we saw signs of this kind of play during Rice and they couldnt bust past .500. I still think RU will struggle with shooting and its these lulls which I have seen in all 3 games that is going to be the biggest obstacle to overcome when conference play begins. But thats to worry about later, RU is 3-0 and if they can take care of business will be 6-0 heading down to Miami where its not quiz time, its a big test

Our half court offense was beyond bad......and we still had a 20+ lead after 30 minutes.

All games are quizzes. The foundation is being built. I just want to make sure there aren't cracks. The expectation of what Scarlet Knight basketball player does and the energy in which he does it so far has been elevated exponentially. We are no longer casual on the defensive end or going for a rebound.

They are defending well and playing hard---------those are the first steps.

Bac, you need to go back to your "GAME 3: Scrappy Defense and Rebounding"-type titles. "DePaul Thoughts" = boring! But maybe you're changing with the times. I always look forward to your game recaps regardless.

Anyway, a few points of my own:

1. If we're going to be a poor shooting team (which we are), at least we can fall back on defense and rebounding. Defense and rebounding don't (shouldn't) go into slumps like shooting, and Deshawn, CJ, and the guards are all crashing the boards and playing good D.

2. Sa had some nice moves in the post, but he needs to finish. But good to see he can step out and hit a jumper.

3. Nigel is a BAD shooter right now. But he provides everything else on the floor, including good defense and good ball handling.

4. Still waiting for Corey to find his shot, but he is playing good defense, and teams have to respect his dribble penetration.

5. Would obviously like to see more outside shooting. Williams has been solid, but I'm waiting for a breakout game from Thiam, and it would be nice if Corey and Nigel could at least shoot 33%.

Anyway, good start to the season. We will just have to see if this is a mirage against poor competition or the real thing.

I like how many players came in and CONTRIBUTE. Everyone brought something to the game last night. They scrapped. The mixed it up. Guys communicated. Some great skills were showcased at times....

The game just "made sense"...sooooooooo makes me wonder what EJ did last year.....

What a difference a coach makes! Having one, I mean!

I didn't get to see too much of your game last night, as I was obviously more preoccupied with our own, but you can't argue with the results. One thing that jumped out at me this morning (as pointed by On the Banks) was the way Sanders shut down Bill Garrett Jr., who I think is a terrific player. That says a lot about the commitment to defense your team has adopted.

*Sigh* ... I knew the Eddie Jordan glory days wouldn't last forever...

Still allowing WAY too many open three point looks. We got very lucky they couldn't hit anything until the last 5 minutes of the game.

On the flip side we aren't getting enough open three point looks for our shooters. Considering how quick Corey and Nigel are they should be able to penetrate and kick.

Overall though very happy.

The offense will come around and improve. Don't forget, we have a bunch of guys who sat out or were out for extended times last year, and a bunch of new pieces that have come aboard this year. It takes time to shake off the rust and gel especially on the offensive end, so I expect to see improvement on offense (and shooting) as the year goes on.

Poor closeout of game was due to working the clock instead of attacking, no true point guard, depaul hit a few shots. Game was never in doubt. Love the way this team plays and they will only get better......... 3-0

I thought on a few occasions Corey and Freeman were a bit slow closing out on perimeter shooters...and it didn't cost us.

The mens basketball program clearly is in transition from abysmal to average/good status based on the new coaching staff and the contributions of new additions to the team.Definite improvements in defense, rebounding and foul shooting.Offensively, inconsistent 3 point shooting will be become more relevant as league competition begins.Fans saw Cain go wild for DePaul with 3 pointers that made the final score far closer than it should have been.

Pikiell has gotten the players to buy into the team concept which means sharing playing time and who takes the shots. The marked improvement in foul shooting helps to negate the poor 3 point shooting.Lots of positive energy and fans on this board are actually excited about mens basketball.Hopefully, more fans will show up at the RAC starting this Sunday.I'm hoping this positive energy will translate into recruiting for 2017 and 2018. A juco or a 5th year senior 3 point shooter would be a nice addition for the remaining 2017 scholarship.

My favorite play of the game was actually a foul on us. At about the 10 minute mark in the 2nd half Freeman got beat clean on a cut from Eichelberger (sp?). Against 90% of teams its an uncontested layup. Sa comes over, completely instinctively, goes for the block/foul and fouls him resulting in 2 FTs v. a layup.

That moment was when I became a convert to this team is really good on the defensive end. When the slides, help and recovers, etc. become instinct you are good.

The early returns are promising. But, there is of course still vast areas for improvement. The next major hurdle in putting our dismal past in the rear view mirror is to avoid a WTF home loss to a team like Niagra, Morgan St., FDU, etc.

Better team than last season but they made a 20-point rout get tight towards the end.
Need to work on closing games out.
I have seen many times in the past where a very good opponent would come in and build a 15-20 pt lead in the 2nd half then do what I call 'Stepping on their neck". In other words, going into a full court press and not letting the momentum go away. I'd love to see Laurent guarding the inbounds and Williams
guarding the point guard tight. Make them get a 5 second call or force a bad pass to the center court. We need to do this in the OOC part of our schedule because you know it's going to happen to us in the B1G games.

I just remember looking at one point and with Gettys we had Freeman, Laurent, Sanders, and Johnson on the floor and thinking there is some serious athleticism. No, not great shooters or great size, but they were going to win all of the battles for the loose balls with their quickness and hustle and be a pain for the other team to deal with.

Here's the thing....we did alot of sloppy things yesterday....still leaving guys open...missing chip shots around the basket never mind around the perimeter where at one point we essentially abandoned even trying...and the stupid travel calls.....plus the refs were not doing us any favors....and we were still up by 22 at one point in time. If any of those things were working it would have been ugly, like 30+ point beating.

6-0 is a very real possibility with a likely loss against Miami. Its what we do between Miami and Seton Hall that will determine if this team has a shot at .500.

I think the added depth has a lot to do with it. The players have to compete in practice in order to get minutes during games. I know the competition has been easy but learning to win is important and last night was a nice step.

I figured I was dreaming when I heard Raftery say "Rutgers is just out-hustling DePaul" When was the last time we heard that? It moved to fantasy when he later said "Rutgers is in control."

As far as the last 5 minutes: Couldn't expect DePaul to continue the horrid shooting. Some body had to get hot. At least one of those threes was from Douby territory. They hadn't had a run all game. What impressed me was the slow down game which they kept running their sets, attacking when it was there. Not just standing and dribbling at the top of the key until there was no time to get off a reasonable shot.

The speed and quickness on this team is mind boggling. Haven't had that since ????? Maybe DePaul was just slow, but this was the most enjoyable game to watch in years (Wisconsin, maybe?). Can't wait to see this team at the RAC, now that the hustle and toughness is back.

Tremendous improvement in FTs. Last year it was Brick, Brick, Brick....

Foul shooting was where we won the game. We didn't shoot all that well from the field and were still up 20. It's a revelation and credit to good coaching.

I'm impressed with Gettys. Seem like a player with a high bball IQ, which we have not seen a lot of at RU over the past few years.

Only 3 guys who played major minutes last year are in the rotation.

Winning pretty easily on the road against a BE team, even a not-so-good one, is amazing progress. Hustle, rebounding, help defense, sharing the ball, and FT shooting are all very much improved, between better coaching and some talent infusion. Game shooting clearly needs to improve, still, but it's nice to know the other elements can enable us to win, even when we don't shoot great.

Anyone who's been around the last 10+ years has to be at least excited about what Pikiell has accomplished so far and eager to find out how much further he can take us. Instead of dragging myself to games or barely watching on TV, I'm psyched for Sunday and the rest of the season.

Another staple from our more competitive years was just how the defensive intensity fed off a capacity crowd in the RAC. It's almost scary to think what the athleticism on this team could be like with a full house rocking.

Agreed. Individual players have much to do yet. But their potential shows through. Sanders body is looking more like a man's than a high school star's.The play that measured improvement for me was breaking the press in the last 2 minutes and coming back with the quick score. Every possession thereafter was about using up the clock.

Excellent win last night considering where RU has been.
Playing thus far like a very poor version of San Diego State is a good thing.
I think Sa will play a very big role for this team, esp in Big 10 action.
Good to have 2 legit ball handlers in Johnson and of course Sanders, who played within team concept
Great to see fast breaks finished clean with layups
No let down against Purple Eagles and beyond, until game at Canes.

I was thinking the same thing on Sa. He appears to be much more athletic than Gettys but I guess Gettys does the little things.

Me too. We missed some free throws when closing the game out, but at midway through the second half he also said "free throws are just one of the statistical categories in which Rutgers is dominating." I had to let that sink in. I don't think that has been said of a Rutgers team since before the Bannon days, which goes before my time.

Can't say this is the case, only I think it is:
Something I noticed at the end of game and with RU assured of winning: the TV cut to Hobbs on the bench not looking to happy and I got the impression that he noticed something he didn't like , making me think that this staff is not slacking off at any time and Hobbs probably will be addressing what he saw in the next practice.

I can't imagine this happens often (especially for us), but this was the 2nd game in a row where we grabbed more offensive rebounds than the opponent had defensive rebounds.

In EJ's defense - due to injuries he had half a team. Remember, that not only impacts your game performance but limits what you can do at practice and how hard you can push a team at practice. That being said I don't think he was the right guy for the job so I am not trying start a discussion on his relative merits as a coach. He flat out didn't get it done. But I coached bball from 8th grade through varsity for almost 40 years and had several teams that were undermanned for various reasons and it was really difficult to prepare. Virtually impossible to scrimmage, a lot of offense no defense stuff, 5 v 4, 4 v 5 etc. Had to be very creative at practice. I didn't envy his position last year at all.

Didn't know the AD sat on the bench and addressed the team at practice, lol - I'm guessing you're about the 4th or 5th person who's made that mistake in the past few weeks for some weird reason...
