Diallo transferring

Expecting to compete at this level with grad transfers plugging major holes is far fetched.

Losing a serviceable 7 foot junior that would've gotten 15 minutes a game is not good imo.

Not saying diallo is a big loss or that it wasn't expected but losing Johnson/Laurent/diallo coupled with the loss of Gettys and the possibility of sanders not returning is a lot to address this late in the process.

Saying we'll be better next season when we don't know for a fact Corey will be back is absurd.

Can't disagree here, but I never thought we would be better next year anyway. I do think that calling Diallo "serviceable" is a stretch, however.

Why do you feel Diallo would have gotten 15 minutes per game? Just because Doorson/Sa would be in foul trouble, and we'd need a third warm body?

Pikiell gave Diallo a lot of burn during the start of conference play - but he disappeared from the rotation later in the year. Pikiell cut back on his minutes after the Maryland game, and eliminated them entirely after Purdue. Clearly he wasn't giving Pikiell the effort/minutes he expected, and I'd imagine the decision to move in a different direction was made some time in early February.

From the start of the season through Fordham (1/18), he played in just 3 of 12 games, and averaged 2.7 min (0 pts, 0.7 rb)
Then, from Seton Hall through Maryland (12/23-1/24), he played in all 9 games and was seeing 12.7 min (1.7 ppg, 2.9 rb)
Then, from Wisconsin through Purdue (1/28-2/14), he played in 5 of 6 games and was seeing 5.2 min (0 pts, 0.4 rb)
After that? He sat 5 of the final 6 games, and saw just 1 min in the last against NW.

We're going to have like 7 scholarship players next year

This is silly, because we have 10 right now.

Only 3 spots to fill. Maybe two grad transfers and a sit out transfer.

Leaves 5 spots for the big 2018 recruiting class.....6 if Sanders leaves after 3 years.

I think he would play 15 mins per game for sure. He averaged about 9 last year and now with gettys gone and doorson unable to play major minutes I think by default he would.

Listen. I'm not panicking or saying the sky is falling. All I'm saying is we have a lot of major holes to address and we are already past the 2017 freshman signing period. So we will be looking for grad transfers to play major roles. At this level, that is worrisome. I have the utmost faith in this staff but I'm also not going to be blind to what I think could be glaring issues.

im really hoping there are some people were waiting to lock in. Diallo, Nigel and Lauren. Gettys gone. Corey in limbo. Really feeling crappy after the fun year we had last year.

We're going to have like 7 scholarship players next year

The lack of faith by some posters in this thread is a bit surprising to me

I am not worried at all.

This was expected guys nothing to worry about.

So a guy you think would get minutes next year by default is a significant loss?

Folks, no need to trash the guy on his way out. He came here, he went to class and represented RU well, he can hopefully have success some place else, and we can add a player THE Coach thinks will be a better fit.

Just say thanks, good luck, and trust the guy we're paying and did a hell of a job last season knows what he is doing.

No I think you need to reread my posts. I don't think the loss is significant by itself but do think the combination of losing Johnson-gettys-Laurent-diallo and replacing it with mensah and baker is cause for concern.

I also clearly said I'm not panicking. I'm simply saying we have a lot of holes to address and I'm not as confident as many others that a few grad transfers will be game changers in the big ten.

I think Diallo's a talented guy, and he'll find a place somewhere. I wish him the best of luck wherever he lands.

I just don't think that he fit what the staff was trying to do with the team, and it was pretty clear mid-way through the season that Pikiell was reducing his role on the court. Sure, he averaged 8.3 min per game played overall last year... but he also only played in 18 of 33 games. He saw just 13 total minutes on the court over the final 10 games.

It really seems like it took him a while to get comfortable with what Pike was trying to do (sat 9 of the first 12 games), then had a span of 9 games in the middle of the season where he didn't manage to win Pike/staff over. The staff then seemingly went a different direction in February.

Good luck to him, and hopefully Pike finds a big body who fits better into his vision.

He is not replacing them with Mensah and Baker. They were already part of next year's team before anyone transferred.

I also was only surprised by Johnson for the same reason but I did think we would lose at least 3 guys to transfer. I know coach and his staff is working hard every single day. I trust in all of them. I firmly believe they will improve our roster. Too many people are getting in a panic situation because we lost a guy who averaged 0.8 ppg and one who averaged 3.0 ppg. As I've said several times it might take until August but we will bring in guys that will be at least as productive. Please trust the process.

Like it or not transfers have become part of the sport. Looks like there will be between 500 and 800 this year. I did not actively root for anyone to leave but was realistic to know this had to happen if we were going turn over our roster quickly. Didn't anybody put 2 and 2 together as to why coaches were still recruiting 2018 class when we already had a full roster?

It's nice that people trust the staff but, frankly, the jury's out on the staff's ability to bring in talent right now. We can HOPE that whoever they bring in will be upgrades over Johnson, Laurent, and Diallo but there isn't evidence YET that they can. All we have to show for their first true recruiting class is Mensah who had no offers as far as anyone can tell and Baker who everyone on this board keeps telling us we should not expect too much from. They had to scramble last year to fill out the roster and ended up signing a guy like Bullock which is absolutely mind boggling to this day. I'm not expecting postseason next year but I don't want to worry about winning a single conference game either.

Agree coaching staff needs to prove they can recruit but to be fair they have only been on the job for just over 1 year. I would consider their recruiting last year a success given the extremely short period of time they had to actually recruit and getting Gettys on board.

They got doucre and baker. Def not chopped liver.

I feel very comfortable saying that I have no concerns whatsoever.

Every Rutgers fan should have some concern since Rutgers has won only 6 regular season B1G games in 3 years and has ranked at the bottom of all league teams.Wishful thinking needs to be replaced with actual results of closing the deal on top tier recruits.Being satisfied with role players won't change the status quo for Rutgers.

I agree, for the most part, that any new staff gets a pass for whatever class they can cobble together in the Spring that they get hired but, still, signing Bullock was a waste of a scholarship and the staff has to take a hit for that. Previous RU staffs have immediately picked up the likes of Jeff Greer and Jerome Coleman shortly after being hired and we didn't get anyone like that. That class isn't really my concern.

I'm more concerned that they didn't land any game changers in their first class with only Baker and Mensah. If Doucare (sp?) does reclassify and is on campus in September that makes that class look better but there are no Dahntay Joneses or Kadeem Jacks suiting up for Coach Pikiell in year two of his regime like there were for previous staffs. I like Pikiell and this staff a lot but can they recruit? I hope so, but I haven't seen any evidence yet. We'll know a helluva lot more within the next 7 months when the November signing period begins but for this upcoming season, they've got some work to do to field a respectable team.

The intent was not to trash him, but when posters call this a big loss for next year, people are going to respond.

This staff is very well organized. I'm sure they knew a while ago that these guys were leaving and they have a backup plan.

Have to admit that I did not see the upside in Doorson, Sa and Diallo.

Not going to sweat this one at all. We had some of the worst big men in P5 last season IMHO. I trust Pike to thin out the herd in this group. Gettys was a stop gap choice yet he was far more polished than most of our big men. No reason we can't get better guys now to replace the ones that left ( except for Nigel.)

This , to me, is just a project RU recruited that was developing slower than anticipated deciding to leave in order to get more playing time.
Diallo seeing the writing on wall ( or have it pointed out to him) transfer because he felt he probably would spend more time on the bench at RU than he wanted.

I wish him success , except against RU, wherever he goes and he earns his degree there. Being a partial qualifier when he committed to Rutgers will make his earning a degree a success story on its own

understand...but debating them at the expense of this guy's exposure just isn't worth it IMHO. imagine if you were at work, decided to leave, and everyone posted on a public forum why you weren't any good anyway...we suck.

Doucre not a role player

I have no concerns. None

Feel free to worry away.
