Expectations: What Should They Have Been?

I posted this on the Round Table yesterday, and thought I would share it here, also. Just 1 person's opinion. For the record, up front, I generally support whoever the Rutgers' coaches are at the moment ... I do not always agree with all their decisions (for example, I advocated starting Rettig, and at a minimum, strongly believe Rettig should receive at least 1 drive per half, at the beginning of the 2nd and 4th quarters, regardless of game situation) ... but just because I do not agree with their decisions does not mean they are not effective coaches, or that I should not support them and their success.

Obviously, like many, I am at least somewhat dispirited at how the season is unfolding. There are many reasons, of course, which include:

1) I was appalled at the August arrests - appalled on behalf of the hit to the reputation of Rutgers, and also extremely worried about the affect on RU's defense (I believed graduating Nova was a HUGE hit to the expected 2015 performance of the team, and that an improved defense was the only way to offset that).

2) I was disappointed with the MEDIA fire about Flood's intervention in the Barnwell grades situation. Should there have been some disciplinary action? Yes. Should there have been a THREE game suspension? Ridiculous ... only at Rutgers, and not because of higher standards but because of bowing to media pressure. A warning, a fine and probation would have been much more appropriate ... or a MAXIMUM of a 1-game suspension. I have not seen ANY other school - P5 or otherwise - discipline their coach to this extent for much more serious breaches of school rules. And the timing was awful also. Sure, I get the investigation was going on during August ... but are you telling me the people involved could not be reached? Bull donkey. By the way, the employee who leaked the news of the investigation should be fired ... period. He or she is not protected by whistle-blower rules, since the event had already been reported and the investigation was underway. Leaking to the media that an investigation was underway, and what the issues were is not whistle-blowing. Oh ... and the RU Faculty Committee or Union should be publicly disciplined for releasing in their statements what Barnwell's grades were, which had not been released by any other source ... those grades are private - or should have been. Is it not equally awful that the RU Faculty Union is releasing students' grades publicly?

3) I was very disappointed in the Caroo situation: Both his actions (he should NEVER have put himself in that situation), but also the actions of the police, who appear to have disproportionately landed on one side of the equation in ways that do not appear to be justified. Unfortunately, this now has to just play out legally. Rutgers has no choice.

4) I was unhappy with the outcome of the Washington State game, a winnable game ... But games sometimes hinge on 1 or 2 plays ... Jacobs played the ball perfectly on that last drive, and had he held onto he ball (as he should have), the game is over, RU wins, and everyone is happier. And what a play by the WSU receiver to come up with that ball after the tip! RU did not play poorly that game, and the offense improved throughout the game, as the game went on.

5) I did not watch the Penn State game (was out that night), and will not watch it ever, I do not think. RU was obviously manhandled, which is an unhappy occurrence. And was unable to attack a weak PSU OL. Laviano was unable to, or chose not to, throw downfield (bad play calling, bad arm, bad OL, no Caroo or all of the above?). I would have thought RU had a chance to win this game, and it is disappointing to not even compete closely. There is NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER the team HAD to be negatively affected by the series of body blows: The August arrests, the coach suspension 2 days before the game, the Caroo arrest (and loss of RU's best player).

6) I am somewhat disappointed Rettig either did not "win" the QB job, or was selected. Laviano has not been bad, and even has been relatively solid. But I would have liked to see the upside of Rettig. That said, I do not question the coaching staff too much on this: They see the practices. I AM however, VERY unhappy that Rettig has not been given ONE series each half ... let's say the 1st drive of the 2nd quarter and the 1st drive of the 3rd quarter, in each game REGARDLESS of game situation. This would not "challenge" Laviano as the starter, would not alter the "we have ONE starting QB" philosophy, but would provide the back-up - who has essentially the same experience level as the starter - with some game experience, and provide a legitimate comparison in case the starter has an off game, or does not improve.

But what should be RU's fans' expectations, both going into the season, post the August arrests, and now?

To start, look at the RU team expected to take the field in 2015 after the 2014 season ended:

1) RU had just FOUR (4) starters returning on offense: James (coming back from an ACL, his 2nd ACL surgery), Lumpkin, Muller and Caroo. Maybe Patton, though I am not sure he started any game in 2014. RU graduated/lost a 4-year starter at QB, a 3-year starter at FB (a GREAT blocker), a 2-3 year starter at TE and 3 starting OL. There were a number of posters on this Board who believed either Laviano or Rettig would actually be an improvement over Nova, but that was always, frankly, an idiotic and uninformed opinion.

2) RU had just FIVE (5) starters returning on defense: Mera at E, Hamilton at 3-Tech, Gause at Sam, Longa at Will and Barnwell at CB. Sure, many of us (myself included) believed that replacement at Safety and MLB would result in IMPROVEMENTS in the defense.

So, what should have been RU's fans' proper expectations coming into 2015?

So, from a team that surprised many in 2014, and won all but one close games, the veteran QB, 3 OL, the starting TE, the top 2 NT's, the starting MLB, a 2-year starter at the R position and 3 starting DB's were gone. In order to even win 6 or 7 games in 2015, which I definitely thought possible, RU needed THREE things critically, in my opinion:

a) Health
b) The new OL to gel quickly
c) Solid QB development
Of those three, if you include under "health" players showing up and able to play (i.e. include the arrests as the equivalent of injuries), RU has only had ONE of those 3 items clearly occur: "C," QB development (yes, with all the criticism of Laviano and the decision to start him over Rettig, some of which is justified in my opinion, he HAS developed reasonably, in my opinion).

Consider this, Coming out of the Spring, here are RU's expected starters:

Offense: Laviano OR Rettig, James, Bergen, Arciadacono, Lumpkin, Miller, Muller, Denman, (unknown Center), Caroo and Patton.

Defense: Mera, Turay, Hamilton, Joseph, Gause, Lewis, Longa, Barnwell, Boggs, Stephenson, Hester or Jacobs.

So ... consider this, by the Kansas game, between injuries, suspensions and other issues, here is RU's team:

1) Starters returning from 2014: SIX (6), TOTAL, Offense and Defense: THREE on offense (James, Lumpkin and Muller) and THREE on defense (Mera, Gause and Longa).

2) Starters versus expected starters in the Spring: FIFTEEN (15) current starters versus what would have been expected in the Spring ... please name me a team that had THAT level of attrition merely from the Spring! The different starts versus Spring expectations: Flanagan over Arciadacono, Agudosi instead of the suspended Caroo, Lambert instead of the injured Turay, JPO over the injured Hamilton, freshmen Austin and Wharton over the suspended Barnwell and Boggs, and Cioffi over the suspended Stephenson.

On top of that, James should not be starting, frankly. Hicks is better right now, and so is Martin. James just lacks the explosion that has been one of his great assets prior to the latest knee surgery.

It is devastating to the team, both from an on-field performance standpoint, as well as from a MENTAL standpoint, to lose the best returning offensive player and captain, Caroo, and the best returning defensive player and captain, Hamilton. Plus, of course, losing 3/4 of your expected starting defensive backfield.

So, consider this ... what would be your expectations if you were told that RU would return just 6 starters form 2014, and would have to replace your 2 best offensive players (Nova and Caroo), your best defensive player (Hamilton), ALL FOUR starting DB's, and have your expected 3rd best returning defensive player (Turay) limited by injury?

At this stage, I still strongly believe RU has a chance at 5 wins, but I see no realistic path to more than 5 wins, and 3-4 wins seem more likely unless the OL, WR's and QB improve dramatically over the course of the season.

On the other hand ... 2016 looks potentially bright.

1) RU will return ALL its best offensive players other than Lumpkin and Caroo (if Caroo plays in 2015 at all) ... In fact, RU will return 20 of its 22 players on the TWO-deep on offense

2) Assuming Hamilton returns, RU will return 8 of 11 starters on defense, and 19 of 22 players on its defensive 2-deep,

3) Overall, RU will return 17 starters out of 22, and 39 of 44 on its 2-deep.

4) Due to redshirts, RU will have greater depth at WR, TE, DL, OL, at least. Plus some other injured players may return, especially at LB and DE.

5) RU drops Wisconsin and Nebraska as cross-over games, and adds Illinois and Minnesota .. and then Iowa also (may be very good, of course).

I dunno, I think a lot of us mailed in the season once our secondary went into the toilet. Carroo was just the nail on the coffin.

It would have been nice to rally and show some guts, but I don't think many of us on this board harbored any realistic hope of salvaging this season.

So, chalk this year up as a mulligan cause next year will be great?

Here are a few questions that can help predict next year .........
  1. Is there another HOF coach, willing to be a coordinator, that will join the staff next year?
  2. Do we have 10 NFL prospects on the roster next year?
Seriously, you are RUTGERS ALUMNS ..... you are supposed to be a lot smarter than this.

look, if you are really objective, you'd figure the best we were going to be was 6-6, but factoring all that has happened ,we'd take that in a heartbeat

Jellyman is the voice of reason. Thank you. I'd like to go back and redo my season predictions. LOL. If the Indiana we saw last week is for real (and they look it), nobody expected them to be so strong this year. On the other hand, can we revel in the fact that Maryland appears to be a disaster? I am not one to measure against the crappiness of other teams, so my answer to my own question is no.
Jellyman touched upon it, and it has been rarely talked about here--but leadership is an issue. Our offensive Captain is out, and our defensive Captain is out, and our head coach is out. Don't know if the coaches have addressed this, and it is touchy, but shouldn't the Captains be on the field?
What a strange year. Only at Rutgers . . . .

Are you really giving the a battle-tested RU fans here, the "Yeah, this year sucks, but we should have known this...next year should be great though!" spiel? Really?!

We should make you watch the PSU game just for that.

5) RU drops Wisconsin and Nebraska as cross-over games, and adds Illinois and Minnesota .. and then Iowa also (may be very good, of course).

And saved by the schedule with a 7-5 2016 finish, getting embarrassingly smashed for a third straight year by anyone with a pulse. See Flood in 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait.

But I did enjoy the complete 2015 season wrap up Jellyman.

Jelly,
Always enjoy your posts.

I thought, before all hell broke loose, that we could win 6 to 7 games before the season started based on overall perceptions of both RU and our opponents.
After the opener, I was really pretty much stoked. It appeared that we had 2 competent QB's for the first time in a long time. And...with WSU losing to Portland State, I saw another early win on the board with us hosting them and with Temple taking out PSU.
But, then we got hit with the sh*t storm. And, crap just kept coming it seemed with Carroo and Flood.
After losing the close game to WSU, I still felt that we could perform well enough to still make another bowl game. I no longer think this is possible under any situation.

Do yourself a real favor and never watch the PSU game. We looked and played like a mediocre HS team reminiscent of those great Shea days. And I still think they stink.

I cannot agree with your best case number of wins at this point. Like Knight Shift states, Indiana is a lot better than most of us ever believed. Even Army may well be a challenge for our D. Maryland who is also playing like crap is so far away I don't even want to know what either team will look like by then. Those look like the most reasonable choices for a win and I wouldn't bet a dime on any of them right now.

I do agree with your assessment of the QB situation. Like a lot of our fans, I am interested in seeing what Rettig can do too. I am becoming a member of the camp that believes Flood is just not capable of using somebody else once he decides on THE guy. Same goes for James. I love the guy, but he would probably do a lot better later in the games when their D is getting tired. If Flood has some kind of "loyalty" thing going, he needs to remember that his paycheck will most definitely be determined by the performance of the team on the field.

So, my best guess is that unless something short of a miracle occurs we will win only 2 more games.

Serious kudos to you for writing this. This is probably the most thorough and reasonable breakdown of where we are after all the suspensions; and better analysis than one would find on any "news" website. I also agree with your assessment of a 3-5 win season. At this point, anything over 4 wins would be a surprise.

The only thing that I'd add is that the talent level of replacements for 2015-2017 is troubling given how recruiting has been in the 2013-2015 classes; but you can always be hopeful that 2016 will come together somehow with a better coaching staff.

2 things Jelly:

1) I always had this as a 4, 5 tops win season, due to the losses (on both sides) that you mention. Some here thought their replacements would step right in, and we'd be as good, if not better, despite their lack of experience. We lost 225+ starts on O alone! And right "up the gut"! QB, FB, C, OT, OG, TE!! That's nuts!!

2) disagree about 2016. We've still got a long, long way to go, and our schedule - IMHO - is MORE difficult next season. We lose Wiscy and The Huskers - neither what they were last year - for Minny and Illinois (just beat Nebraska..) PLUS an Iowa squad, maybe getting good a year ealier than expected, that could be playing for a Rose Bowl or playoff bid next year. Also, we dump Wazzou for Washington, which is a trade "up" as well, especially considering we have to play at Husky Stadium.

Jelly - all your points point to flood not doing a good job leading this program or recruiting

No, they do not.

Not if you start with the basic FACT that under the best of circumstances RU was starting the season with only 9 returning starters from 2014, a season where you could argue that a combination of luck, several absolutely terrific performances by our Senior, 4-year starter at QB, and COACHING allowed RU to win 5 of its 6 close games.

There is no doubt the 2013 season performance, as well as the recruiting horrors that flowed from coaching recruiting mistakes during that season hurt a LOT. But the coaching staff was shaken up (by Flood), recruiting was better for the 2015 class, and this year's class is another uptick from the 2015 class (if it holds together).

If nothing more serious is uncovered on the program, and RU wins 4 or 5 games this season, Flood would seem to be showing SOME growth - maybe good growth - and will have earned a chance to show more growth in 2016.

And every year RU gets closer to full Big Ten payouts, gets RU closer to more financial flexibility to upgrade the facilities and the staff (either the assistants, or eventually the head coach, if necessary).

Some on this Board think firing the head coach is the answer ... I am unconvinced that is the case. We have a fair amount of young talent on this team, and if the 2016 class holds together, more talent is heading our way. It takes TIME for most talent to mature, despite some fans' desire for instant gratification. And despite the 4 blowouts, I was pretty pleased with last season.

Jelly, you could not be more right about the team, past, present and future, as well as, firing Flood as an answer. Your No. 2 point in your original post is spot on.

Sorry, but with his off the field antics, on top of the horrid coaching, Flood does not deserve a freebie 3 win season.

Another factor is that if Flood goes, we almost certainly lose Russo. Not that Russo might not go elsewhere anyway, but it was Russo himself that said that his commitment was firm as long as Flood was the coach.

I'm not in love with Flood and I don't think he's the best possible coach for RU. I just don't think that, for the money we're willing to spend right now, we can do perceptibly better in terms of wins and losses.

Way too long of a post so I just skimmed . To sum things up the team stinks and flood has run this program downhill .

I have been saying this all summer on this message board and going into the season I was HOPING I would be completely wrong...... But all summer I was saying "Guys I think you have no idea how strong of a QB we had in Nova last year. To come into the BIG10 and do what he did was legit impressive. And I think a lot of people are going to realize the grass isn't always greener when you bring in the next QB."

As of now I think it goes without saying that EVERYONE on this board would bring back Nova over Laviano in a heartbeat.

It was this specific issue with the QB, where we going from a quarterback with close to 4 years as a starter to a QB with ZERO starts, that caused me to think that all the people on the board expecting to be at least as good as last season TO BE CRAZY. But anyway, I CANNOT WAIT for the big blackout game this weekend and for Rutgers to pull off the upset! If Laviano can actually go an entire game without throwing an interception or fumbling (Highly unlikely he goes turnover free I know, I know)... I think we have a shot.

Way too long of a post so I just skimmed . To sum things up the team stinks and flood has run this program downhill .

No ... Flood did not run the program down, though he and his staff (for which he was responsible) did mess up in 2013. But there are 39 of 44 current 2-deep returning in 2016, which probably will be amongst the highest rate of returning players in the country, as opposed to this year when only 9 expected starters were returning, which turned into just 6 by last week (though hopefully 7 if Caroo returns this week or next).

Obviously you did not "skim," but actually did not read the post at all.

Equally obviously, you belong with NJ.com, and their "sound bite" and "tweet" journalism, rather than actual analysis and more detailed and robust discussion.

Nice job Jelly. Reasonable analysis. Agree with the big dropoff in experience especially at the qb position. Also agree that Rettig could be given some series throughout games without damaging the psyche of the starting qb. Like someone mentioned neither qb came in with a wealth of starts under their belts. Our program has to learn how to develop more than one qb at a time. As far as predicting the rest of the season I put it as follow:

Winnable: Army and MD
Surprise Winnable: Neb and Wisc
Competitive Loss: Mich St. & Mich
Non Comp Loss: OSU

Thought we could get 7 wins at begin of season. Wash St was definitely winnable. Staff sh*t the bed in PSU game. Now thinking 5 possibly 6 wins.

GO RU

I was one that thought the qb position could put up similar numbers this year to what we had last year.
2014 58%, 8.7 YA, 20 TD, 12 Int (Nova only)
2015 73%, 8.14, 21 TD, 15 Int (projected based on first 4 games)
So far it is close but I realize it will go down with the tougher games coming in, even if the qb's get better over time. However our season would be very similar to the 3-1 start last year if a fairly easy interception was made at the end of WSU. The big difference is we outplayed PSU last year and this year could not get anything going offensively, but they are tough at home, see OSU last year. Running up the gut against possibly the two best DT's we will see did not help move the ball against PSU. Maybe one of the tougher things to replace this year is the OC experience.

But there are 39 of 44 current 2-deep returning in 2016, which probably will be amongst the highest rate of returning players in the country, as opposed to this year when only 9 expected starters were returning, which turned into just 6 by last week (though hopefully 7 if Caroo returns this week or next).
.

It could be 44 of 44 coming back and it won't mean a damn thing if they don't win on Saturdays. You and I, and everyone else, know that Jelly.

So true about how hard it is to replace "The Fridge." I wonder every game while watching us try to dink and dunk if Fridge would be throwing the ball DEEP every once in a while like he did last year. Granted, the coaching staff obviously trusted Nova more than Laviano and Rettig, but STILL. You cannot win win in the friggen BIG10 conference with a totally predictable gameplan. That can work against other non conference teams, but once you start playing the BIG10 teams they are TOO GOOD to allow them to stack the box and only have to focus on defending the zone 10 yards away from the line of scrimmage. Where are all of the deep post routes we ran last year with lots of success?

Several thoughts on your statistical comparisons:

1) The completion percentage has been excellent, to Laviano's credit. Too many interceptions relative to TD's, though (this is a really big deal) ... must cut back on interceptions and increase TD passes ... to make up for lack of big plays (see below).

2) Big plays ... last year RU's offense had many explosive plays, allowing RU to be much more dangerous. It is far easier to score when you have explosive plays than when you have to drive downfield EVERY time with short plays. Other than the Norfolk State game, RU has not only not had explosive OFFENSIVE plays, they have not really even been close to making those plays. Is that scheming? Or missing Carroo? Or Laviano's arm? Or the OL not protectingf well enough? Or the coaches not trusting Laviano? Who knows.

3) Big Games. There is a theory in sports analysis that says big games and big seasons create more winning chances over long periods of time than "steady as you go" consistent performances (Bill James has analyzed this for baseball, for example). Last season Nova had a number of truly big games, where he literally carried RU on his back for wins: Wash. State, Michigan and Maryland come to mind. And various running backs also had monster games (James at Wash. State, Hicks versus UNC) that carried RU. RU has not shown this during the 1st third of this season: Laviano has not shown the capability for the big game, and RU does not feed one running back enough to have a running back do this.

One of the receivers that had success getting open on downfield routes last season is playing in the NFL this year and the other has been suspended. The O line is not protecting all that well against good teams at the moment, and the QB is in his first year playing D1 football. Combine all that together and I think we aren't going to see tons of downfield completions.

The good news is that the O line will get better at protection, our QB will get more comfortable with each game he plays and as he does, his composure and vision will improve, and we're getting our best receiver back (unless RU has a brainfart). Might take another couple/few games, or it might happen this Saturday. But we will start to see more downfield throws.

Last season, we had a more experienced O-line that played w/good chemistry and we had a 4 year QB who finally gained composure (w/the help of the Fridge, I think). It would be great to be starting right where we left off against NC, but our program just isn't at that point yet. So we take a step back at the start of the season. I'm waiting to see how we do towards the end of the season to judge how we're doing coaching-wise on O.

I think you completely miss Jelly's point (that 39 of 44 coming back gives us a better chance of winning on Saturday). Not sure what your point is.

I think the point is that if you have had a really poor season, returning all your starters may or may not be a positive. I'd imagine Shea had a year or 2 where we were all optimistic heading into the season due to returning "experience". But what was missing was basic talent. Our 2014 recruiting class (recruited in 2013) has already been decimated by departures. That will impact depth down the road. If we were recruiting at a high level, it is easier to take a poor season. That is just not the case.
