Ru with Robinson ranked 36 and Janzer ranked 39 on the class of 2018 senior big board. Hopefully can land another highly ranked kid, that would be Glorious.

BTW-how can anyone keep up with Penn State-this is really not fair!! They have the 3, 4, 5, 7, 11, and 13th kid!!!! Their lowest recruit is ranked 13th!

The PSU thing won't last forever, but it is what it is right now. Eventually there will be the wrong mix of egos in that room.

I don't see the PSU thing ending as long as Cael is there.

I hear you, but I cant see it lasting at current levels. Its unsustainable. They are recruiting kids who would be 4 year starters anywhere else to back up spots, presumably without scholarship money. If they are not playing games with scholarships, kids would have to be turning down full rides to sit on the bench and pay their own way. I understand wanting to be part of the best, but that is just crazy.

Most kids are not turning down rides. It is almost unheard of to have a full ride. Second if kids are not happy they can transfer out. Keep in mind wrestling has a one tiem transfer exemption rule. So if the kid doesn't pan out he can just transfer out and not lose a year. This will be his 8 season at Penn State and it hasn't caught up yet. I don't see why you think it will. Wrestling is a unique sport were individual want to be a best and that requires good teammates to drill against. Gable did it for years at Iowa.

What Cael has built is quite amazing. Just consider that when Gable was dominating with his teams at Iowa, the cost of college was much less significant. Stock piling talent then was much cheaper for the students families and the university. Kids giving up scholarships today, even percentages of a scholarship, are out of pocket a significantly larger amount.

Gable apparently strategized to stockpile talent to weaken other teams. Not sure when scholarship caps were started, but we look to be in another era with penn st.

Anyone know why the number of roster spots isn't standardized among d1 schools? And, is there an actual NCAA cap or is it a self imposed individual university regulation?

It is up to the Athletic Dept at each institution to determine # of roster spots. A lot has to do with Title IX regulations.

Figured as much, but does the NCAA or the conference set a max number? I.e Northwest has a very small roster, that's self imposed, but could we have a roster of 50 if Title IX allowed for it?

I could not find a roster max directed by the NCAA. But really why would a school want 50 kids on a team? All it would do would make the room too crowded. Lets face it once you get over 30 or 35 the remaining 15 or 20 wrestlers are just taking up time and space. The starters are not going to wrestle the bottom kids in practice and they will never see the mat.

the military academies have pretty massive rosters. i think around 50 is typical. no Title IX concerns for those institutions.

Its not unheard of but its more like your choices may be full ride at "Binghamton", 33 to 60 percent at "Rutgers", walk on or books at PSU. Depending on the financial situation of the family, kids may not be giving up as much as people think to take their shot.

People pay more for their children who are non- athletes to go to a better school or one they think they will be happier at. Why should this be any different?
