I think this Houston playoff game is in a dome . I don't like watching games in domes as much as watching a game played outdoors . I know why they build these things for financial reasons , but football was made to be played in the elements. Thoughts ?

On paper I agree and then I see blizzard like conditions and minus 26 in Minnesota.

I think all stadiums should have a roof over the spectators like European soccer stadiums (or Red Bull Arena). I've had my fill of watching games in the rain... but still like the feel of outdoors. Don't know why they have the dome closed in Texas today... looks like it's sunny outside.

Real for real Big domes are OK - but inflatable tents like Syracuse are kinda silly

I'd like to see a NJ dome for one reason. To see a bowl game where the SEC, ACC, and Pac 12 don't get the home field advantage year after year.

The 3 bowls I've attended were all in domes. It definitely didn't feel right. Same for baseball in domes, by the way.

I would love a retractable dome when it's nice want to sit with it open but snow and rain would rather sit indoors

Domes are not necessarily evil - and they can provide positive benefits - and some negatives

However, like a lot of "improvements" that have been introduced to sports, there are many aspects that escaped serious scrutiny & have turned out to be less than totally beneficial or needed serious rethink - some have finally evolved - others have quite a ways to go

With the advent of the Astrodome, there quickly followed the creation of "AstroTurf" which was brutally primitive at first & sent countless number of athletes to the Operating Room. Many product generations later - things are far better - but some facilities still have injury generating playing surfaces & most all authorities agree -a real well groomed natural grass surface is best.

The Science /Art of properly lighting such a facility had to evolve - some have gotten to be OK - and some places are still hideous

The science & technology of climate control was a huge challenge - get things really mixed up in one of those really big domes & you can literally make it rain inside ...!

Domes are engineering marvels - but like all complex projects / advancements - it is difficult to anticipate all of the ramifications - sort of like when virtually everyone thought that going from heavy pliable leather helmets to super hard & rigid polymer material helmets was a brilliant idea - who could have anticipated the potential downsides?

I prefer watching (and playing) games on natural grass. That's the more important dichotemy for me.

Tickets for the Vikings game were half of regular season games. Based on the temperature, I think people overpaid. I'm glad to be on a flight to San Francisco. Was brutally cold, even by Minnesota standards, this morning.

Cmon Plum. Do some simple research first. Hell you should know, no think if this game is in a dome. Rutgers won their first Bowl game at that Stadium.

And it's a trick question as it had a retractable roof

Have been to the Sorry-Excuse dome. One of the worst excuses for a football stadium I've ever seen.

I do feel bad for the Vikings fans who sat in the cold to see that missed field goal at the end.....

The fan and tv experience is much more important now then in the past.

For just about the entire country you have decent conditions (over 40 degrees) through mid November. That means 3/4 of the season is played in decent conditions for the northern teams.

With fans paying an avg price approaching $100 a ticket per game, you don't want uncomfortable conditions. It is also more important to play the scheduled games on time with no issues that can cause delay because of tv contracts that are more and more lucrative. With investments in players of up to $20+ mil a year you don't want freak weather related injuries.

Now if you look at the NFL calendar, the Superbowl was played by the 2nd week of January for the first 12 Superbowls (ie. January 15th). The 1st February Superbowl was in 2002. The Superbowl is now 3 weeks later than it was originally.

There will be a migration in the future for stadiums like we have for surfaces. Most teams user artificial turf now over grass. Eventually you will see more and more teams move to domes / retractable domes to provide a certain level of consistency for game play and the fan experience.

I am surprised we don't see this more in baseball where there are rain outs. In football they play through the rain. Baseball teams lose a lot of revenue when a weekend game is rained out and they have to reschedule for a weeknight (ie. Monday or Thursday). Northern baseball teams (ie. NY, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland) tend to have 3 weeks in the April with cold night games and then potential playoff games under 50 degrees.

Well I certainly remember the Mets playing mostly day games in April at home when the night temperatures were a little low for baseball. Same in Montreal when they were playing outside. TV contracts have mostly put an end to that -- the game has to be played at night so it can be aired live.

The fan in the stadium is not really the concern though, once you've bought your ticket. You could freeze as long as the TV equipment works.

I disagree with the notion that football is meant to be played in bad weather. If it was , the season would start in November and go through March.

I personally hate games like the Minnesota game. Weather dictates the outcome far too much. I want to watch the teams play their games, not run into into the line and see who fumbles the least.

Weather can be a factor, but it shouldn't define the game.

So you want it to start in April and end in September??? Really?
The game has always been played outside in questionable weather. Some of the most famous games have been played in bad weather. Have you ever heard of the Ice Bowl?
What has ruined football is fantasy football. The influence has changed the game where the NFL has continually added rules to add more scoring and passing. The NFL sucks because they have decimated defenses from defending and running backs being one of the most important players on the field.
What was bad about yesterday's game is that neither team knows how to play power football.

No I didn't say that. I said that if football was designed to be played in winter, it would start in winter. The fact is 3/4 of the year is played in pretty decent weather and the season starts in the summer.

And the ice bowl is more mythical than anything else. 21-17 who cares. I've seen a billion better games than that.

And for the "neither team knows how to play power football", why should they? Didn't I read for the last 3 years on this board how we shouldn't be playing power football?

Let the teams play their games and let the better team win.

That a really dumb post.
It is designed to be played in the winter. Its also designed to be played in summers heat and humidity. Only the strong survive that play in all the elements. That has alway been part of the game!
Ice Bowl mythical? How about recent playoff games in NE, Green Bay, NY, Philly.....
You never heard from me that college or pros should give up power football. Go give crap to those that want the Oregon offense everywhere. And wake me up win they win a national championship playing it.

Nice. And mature too.

In the meantime I'll enjoy watching tonights game knowing the game will be decided by the teams and not the weather.

Aka, Flood-ball.

We need to raise another 100 million to put a dome over the south endzone, install climate control, massaging armchairs with individual tablets and lightning speed wifi. It's the only way we'll ever get more than 6000 students out to more than 1-2 games a season.

I don't care about the roof when I'm watching on TV.

I do hate going to games in domes. Except when it was freaking cold in Syracuse.

Wasn't such an issue when the football season started the weekend after Labor day and ended by Thanksgiving.

FB is a traditionally considered a Fall sport and BB a summer sport though BB starts in some really cool chilly late Mar early April weather when us easterners are still playing the winter sport here...hoops...yeah as kids we'd start throwing the FB around in early to mid Sept but in OCT we really amped it up right through Thanksgiving or so...usually the weather tells us what season it is....traditionally..All this early starting late finishing for everything is financial-advertising motivated by greed.

What's not mature about it? You believe football should be played void of the elements. I believe it should be played as it it's been played for 60 years.
You stamping your feet demanding they play void of outside elements is the immature one.
I laugh that you want to change the history of the sport because you want to see pinball scores in football but my view into question

I'm not stamping my feet and you are the one that called my post "dumb". Guess what, some people might have different opinions than you :)

We are talking pro football not college.
But they have been playing college football on New Year Day for over 100 years.
I have no clue what some of you know about football but it seems you don't like history at all

It was a dumb post. You said that football wasn't designed to be played in the winter. Wrong. That if it was it should start in the winter. Wrong again. You have such little knowledge of the history of the sport that both points are dumb. Read about the history of the sport sometime

Whitebus.. you are wrong (and right).

The current "winter" sports like Basketball begin playing in November, which happens to be when the first game was played. And it begins practicing in mid-October.

Furthermore, if you look at, for example the Rutgers Football Record Book All-Time results.. you will see the games played first filled November and then began creeping back into October.. and it took 25 years before there was a September game... and also a December game that same year. And Rutgers did not play more than 1 September game until 1968.. 99 years into its football-playing history.

But basketball, a "winter sport", was actually created to help keep football players in-shape in the off-season.

But football started in November in the northeast. Clearly cold weather was a factor and was part of the game.

Again please pay attention. The discussion is mainly about pro football and again the Rose Bowl has been played on New Years Day for over 100 years

History in FB was started right here...but face it....January is not really inseason....its hoops season...its why its called postseason..
