For all you Freeman bashers

He held Minny’s Murphy, the B1G leading rebounder and nations leading double-double machine to 11 points and 9 boards. Nice effort. Not always pretty, but effective. Go RU.
I agree.
Without him last night we might not win..
he had 23% of the teams rebounds in 18 min of play

Of course the haters wont see it that way

Eugene taking the charge for Murphy's first foul early on, then Freeman pump faking him out of position for his second were big plays, got him out essentially the rest of the first half.

Uhhhhhhh

We played well because Freeman only played 18 minutes and in those 18 minutes he only attempted one dumb shot as opposed to the 7 or 8 wasted possessions he creates by forcing shots in the 28 minutes he usually plays.

Not to mention Murphy was in foul trouble early (remember Freeman did not start) and played limited minutes.

Seems coach finally decided to pull him aside a reign him in about two weeks ago.

And, that's what he can be good at. But, whenever he has the ball in his hands I cringe, rarely disappointed. He has a very high opinion of himself on the court.

Freeman played quite well. He did have 10 or 11 rebounds in 18 minutes and shot 7-8 on the foul line. He only forced one shot last night. He was a real contributor. Eugene had 7 rebounds and 9 points and Thiam I think had 6 rebounds. Doorson had 3 rebounds I think in the first 4 minutes. So many guys contributed. It was a real pleasure.

With all due respect (and yes, Freeman was terrific on the boards last night, and even better from the FT line), Freeman rarely covered Murphy. Omoruyi was the primary defender of Murphy. In the 2nd half, Freeman DID often come over to double Murphy, especially in the last 10-12 minutes of the game - and did a very nice job on that help defense.

Murphy is just too physically strong for Freeman, who got simply over-powered by Murphy when he was covering him. Omoruyi, though not as athletically explosive as Freeman, is taller and much stronger physically than is Freeman. And is a much better defender.

This! Not sure what game the OP watched. Freeman only played 18 minutes last night so that stat alone tells you he was not the key to defending Murphy. We are best when Freeman concentrates on rebounding and getting put backs. His excellent FT shooting last night was a bonus.

Doorson also frustrated Murphy, and I think forced him into two traveling turnovers.

Freeman played mostly within himself last night, which was great to see. A couple of silly things (trying to force a shot into trees, throwing a ball into the 20th row), most mostly played the sort of contained "get the rebounds, give the ball to the guards, and prowl the paint for offensive putbacks" game that he's best at. He also did a great job at the stripe.

Hopefully that continues tonight - though I'd look for him some more on offense against Indiana, as they don't have trees in the middle to frustrate him with their height. They have no active player who plays more than 5 min/game that is listed over 6-7.

Love Feeman’s reboubding efforts, not a huge fan of his demeanor at times. And with the ball in his hands I hold my breath. That zip pass down low that sailed over our cheerleaders heads had me screaming.

That is a little simplistic to say we played well because Freeman didn't play much.

still want to know who caught that thing up 10 rows...lol.
He had a very good game....think Pike message has gotten thru. And limited minutes is working well.

not me. Freeman was looking for teammates instead of doing it on his own. I wish he didn't throw the pass, but that was far less damaging than him shooting over a triple team.

It's his mindset on the offensive end that gets him bashed.

Nice try tho

This. He hesitates and gets lost. When he doesn't hesitate early in the game, and gets confident, his O game is better. This is what we saw last year from Eugene, as a frosh - the "hesitation" - that he is slowly shaking which is allowing him to grow on that end of the court.

I don’t think I’ve been too harsh on Freeman, and understand his value. But let’s not praise his defense too much. Against Illinois he was moving out of guys’ way and just gambling for steals whenever he could, and he still fouled out.

He was clutch at the line yesterday and pulled this game from the toilet tonight. As one of the announcers said he had the game of his career. Great time for it. Tonight he played like a senior.
