Not a pretty game by any stretch. Once again another lethargic start with ice cold shooting against an awful team. Once again, Rutgers looked like a slow plodding poorly coached team with poor shot selection and bad defense. Once again Rutgers looked like anything like a Big 10 school. In the end RU pulled away and won comfortably by 15 but pretty much teamwise did the bare minimum to get by against a severely overmatched Black Bear team. However, unlike the Columbia game there are enough positives to take to feel better about this team than one would think coming off a wobbly performance like today

The future of the program is in its youth. Rutgers has some talent. Its just not developed and experienced talent. Baker and Geo are solid enough players but they are not going to be dominant players which means the only way that RU can compete and win games is through a team effort and that relies on if the freshmen step up and deliver. Unfortunately this is the issue. With little upperclass depth and no shows from Doucoure and Thiam as well as less than expected production from Kiss, Rutgers is going to look like a mess without freshmen production. And thats what you see here now. The team's offensive production has ground to a halt. The outside shooting by Baker and Kiss is brutal. There is some selfish play and a lack of working for their shot. The confidence level has tanked. So there is your first half of the game. But here come the freshmen, from about the 4 minute mark in the first half, it was freshmen that scored the last 9 points of the half that pushed RU from 25-21 down to 30-27 ahead. And when Maine had crept back in to make the score 46-42, it was back to back scores by Myles Johnson underneath that put RU back in control, later a 5 points splurge by Caleb McConnell put RU up 57-42 and it was goodnight Irene time. During that time, you also saw Eugene wake up and certainly you can infer why. With less pressure on him and more of the freshmen stepping up, we see things click and RU is off to the races playing solid team ball.

Myles Johnson....10 points, 10 boards, first double double..best game as a Knight. 6 of those boards were offensive. He just dominated the paint when he got the touches. Yes its Maine but yes he is showing confidence and progress after some disappearing acts of late.. He has to get as comfortable there as possible when the big dogs come and he provides so much more of an offensive threat than Doorson. Caleb McConnell..best game at RU and looked legit. Yes its Maine but the kid has come along incredibly since his deer in the headlights moments in the first couple of games. On a team that is ice cold from 3, his 3-7 performance was quite welcome and he has shown he is an excellent free throw shootter 5-6 now 9 of his last 10. 14 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 assists and only one turnover. Way to go Caleb. More comfortable not only shooting the ball,. but handling the ball and his defense continues to grow. Montez Mathis continues to progress, 7 points, 4 rebs, 3-4 at the line. Seems to be playing within himself right now and not forcing it. I know we all want more but his progression is on the proper path. Harper did struggle yet again and only hit one three out of 5. Hopefully he can be more effective as the schedule toughens.

So there has been alot of practice time of late. You wonder sometimes when you see the Columbia game and the first of the Maine game what is going on. Teamwise the team looks funky for long stretches. I do not like that Pike and staff seem to be having trouble getting this team out of the gate energized. Cannot get those efforts vs Maryland and OSU because instead of 7 point defecits, they will be 21 point defecits. So while teamwise and rotation wise the staff is struggling, I think individuallly you have to think that Myles, Caleb, Ron and Montez are really getting alot of work and attention to detail and perhaps maybe thats why as a team there seems to be a drop off. Individually I think we are in better shape so thats why I am more optimistic than you would think after a two game stretch like this against cupcakes.

Geo did not have a good game again today. He did have 9 assists but he just seems to have hit a rough patch overall of late. I have no doubt that we will see an increase in effort and energy level when Maryland rolls into town. Same for Eugene who was quiet in that first half. I expect a strong start vs Maryland and really think its a game that RU can win if they play smarter, work the ball, keep it moving and dont be lazy taking the outside shot. This team is much much better when they get the ball in the paint and even on misses, let the rebounds and second chance shots happen. I am concerned that Kiss is so wildly inconsistent. That was clearly not expected...we heard many so called insiders talk how great a shooter he was...well that is not the case, we have the data points. So until I see consistency out of him, I think his minutes might actually get reduced. Thaim..omfg no comment, there is no way in hell the staff expected nothing out of him.

So onto Maryland...winnable game IMO but will it come together for this team or are we looking at another nice try Rutgers performance ala Wisconsin or SHU

Too many 3s. Harper needs to stop shooting 3s. Glad 2nd half was more interior focused. Thought pikiell wanted less 3s. Excellent performances by Myles Johnson. Montez and Caleb also played quite well. Have no idea what's up with Issa. Dourcore has injured back. Myles also took 4 stitches during game. Glad Eugene played his regular game in 2nd half. Geo and Caleb play well together. Jacob young was back home for holidays. Love the upside with Montez and Myles. Need more from Kiss.

I realize that sometimes they had open 3s but I can also count a bunch of forced 3s by Kiss and Baker..and one by Eugene before halftime that could have been costly. When this team passes the ball sharper and quicker and works to get it inside, it usually finds success. There was a lot of talk of continuing to take more 3s because they were so wide open, not so sure in a game today when they were not going down and Caleb was the only one capable of hitting them.

bac- another great recap of a game that had Rutgers fans very concerned for the first 25-30 minutes of the game because of the woeful shooting and allowing Maine to get too many easy baskets on drives and some lucky banked 3 point shots. The game suddenly changed with better defense and Rutgers moving the ball better on offense resulting in open 3 pointers and layups around the basket.

Take the win and be happy but be cognizant that the presumed easy games on the schedule are over.Maryland will be a reality check because they have a balanced inside/outside attack which Rutgers will have great difficulty matching.Bakers offense in recent games is a major concern because Rutgers depends on him and Eugene to lead the team in scoring.

This last month is a good reminder that we need to be realistic about Geo. I don't know if he's putting pressure on himself or what but he's just looked off for long stretches.

Fans aren't watching the games and commenting about 3s.....when a team plays zone, that's what shot attempts are given up. You can't turn down wide open looks....if Harper hits a couple and McConnell or Mathis knock down one more, this isn't a sluggish game, it's a 30 point rout...

I don't think anyone looks sharp or explosive vs a zone....that's what it was and recap makes sense.

Maryland and Ohio State up next and we have 4 capable shooters on the court when McConnell plays. That's all you can ask for.

I'm still really concerned over the slow starts to the game. Not sure how a coach can cure this. I mean, this coaching staff is LEGIT and great. I really hope they can come up with something.

I don't know if I've ever seen a flatter shot than Harper's. I certainly haven't seen anyone with a high 3 pt % with a shot like this ... Shouldn't the coaches be correcting this?

one difference with the increased level of competition is that RU is going from the hunted back to the hunter again in almost all its league games. Obviously the last 4 cupcake non conference games they didnt feel too comfortable in that roll and now they become the team hunting where by looking at that position this year they seem to do well in. Also some of these schools may have a letdown overlooking RU

this was a Maine zone not Syracuse...settling for open 3s when they can dominate inside by working harder, moving the ball quicker and not becoming lazy didnt help the team today. This is not a good shooting team..its not up and down..its not a good shooting team, repeat its not a good shooting team. Game could have alot easier and put away earlier by playing smarter

Bac, nice recap. If you don't mind, what section do you sit in? You seem to see the whole floor in your recaps.

Kiss was wildly inconsistent at Quinnpic as well. He plays because Mathis’s and Harper are not shooting well and their shots are not respected by defenses. Teams will continue to give Harper space and pack their defense. Pikiell should have gave Mcconnel more time earlier on. He was a deer in the head lights because it was early, he played 3 minutes a game and was on a short leash. Teams should have a solid six to seven players. Rutgers offense looks inconsistent and not thought out because they have depth but it is not all great. Still lots of young players having their progression. Pikiel is a Coach first, recruiter second, and salesmen third. He will always talk up his players.

I think Pikiells biggest mistake of the season thus far was putting way too much pressure on Baker as a sophomore and not giving McConnell more time against teams they blew out by 20.

Myles Johnson is the biggest story. When is the last time that RU had a freshman center get a double-double against anyone?! His upside is tremendous. As for Geo, his shot wasn’t falling today but I will take 9 assists any time, any where. That was the stat of the game. Baker took 11shots -not too many for the team’s best offensive player. He only made 3 of them, but he more than made up for it with 9 assists. That’s growth!

We had an easier time going inside after we made all those 3s in a row and had to move out of zone for a few possessions.

If you pass up open 3s you might as well give up

Few thoughts.......
1. Really liked Myles Johnson's game on the glass, but he had several possessions in the 1st half where he did a poor job rotating defensively. I have been disappointed with his defense.
2. Geo Baker needs to step it up defensively. Too many guys in all different uniforms blowing by him
3. We saw a few more possessions of zone again
4. Would like to see the staff give Eugene more rest. Think he is at his best playing 28ish minutes.
5. I like what I see with team chemistry. I think in the dog days of February it really helps. May translate in an extra win or two.
6. Let's not go overboard with McConnell. Too many fans are judging players value by how they did on their last 4 3 point attempts. Offensively the game was slow and deliberate because of the zone. I still need to see a lot before I have confidence in him more than a guy who can spell Baker for 6-8 minutes.
7. Harper did not play a single minute at the 4. Doorson, Eugene, Johnson and Carter played 80 minutes. Not sure why. I guess domination on glass.
8. Thought Mathis had a solid game against a defense that wouldn't think would suit his game.

Very good observations. You raise one important observation --namely that Geo and Eugene are talented players but not dominant players and there needs to be stepped up play from other players to take the defensive focus off GEO and Eugene. Geo is in a tough spot playing 3 roles and it's taking a physical toll on him --he's the point guard, key perimeter defender and needed scorer. Something has to suffer and it's been his offense and shooting. And Eugene is a good scrappy player but not complete player who needs to improve his shot selection and not force his offense.

I thought the offense played really well in the 2nd half. We had wide open looks on many possessions but just missed the shots.

I actually think we had wide open looks in the first half too, but just missed them. In fact, I made a point the the person who came with me that we had 3 or 4 3 point shots go halfway down and pop out (Not that that counts for anything). I think the key was in the first 5 minutes of the 2nd half, Rutgers made a few threes and Maine adjusted. Then Rutgers was able to go inside with ease.

As coach PIKE said "we got good looks in the 2st half they just werent dropping.."

My humble opinion is we are seeing the freshmen step up(I find that amazing !!)
Myles Johnson with a rare frosh double double
Mathis...spelling GEO at point guard
Harper Jr...17 minutes
McConnell...14pts, 4Rebs, 3assts, 2 steals
:boxing::boxing:I dont recall a better freshman group!:boxing::boxing:

I think Harper will be fine. The rest of his game is great. Defense looks solid, finishes well and is a good athlete. Shot well in HS from deep, i think he will figure it out and the coaches arent adjusting his shot mid-season to mess up his whole psyche.

The story of that game despite the W and 17 points was Eugene looking disinterested on D and playing just overall out of control. I think this was a legit holiday lull that cannot happen every single year. The spaced out scheduling of Saturdays prob adds to it.

Geo looked disinterested as well somehow. Constantly overplaying on D this game possibly due to lesser comp but we cant do this any longer.

McConnell and Johnson were the biggest pluses for me along with Mathis. I think these 3 young bucks are going to be huge for us. McConnell looks poised, shot looks good, plays good D and makes smart plays. DOES NOT FORCE IT. Also loved when he truck sticked #3 at mid court drawing a foul. Mathis is coming along as a slasher and generally plays tenacious D. Johnson was a beast, ripped boards from peoples hands, major slams and played with poise.

Love your post games, but for this one you should have put away your keyboard after “Yes, it’s Maine.”. The Rutgers frosh played against better competition in high school. No need for the giddiness about the numbers put up by Caleb and Myles. We’ve been down that path too many times with new guys on the roster. OOC success has quickly turned to B1G embarrassment. How about we talk after we see what they do against Northwestern, Nebraska and Penn State?

I concur with what Hawk states here. Yes, Pike wants the kids to stop shooting so many threes, and one had to wonder why the shooting of threes went up this game and not down. The reason as Hawk observed is because Maine collapsed down in a zone begging us to shoot threes. If some of those shots went in, we may have seen a more balanced attack and forced Maine out of their zone play. We will see this a lot the rest of season until we can prove to shoot well from the outside. We have to keep our opponents honest, and all that will take if for a few more threes to get knocked down and that will open up the post and low post game we currently have with our young bigs.

As for understanding the coaching where I noticed fans here including the OP critcized Pike heavily yesterday when we were down, have to realize that when you're breaking in a lot of freshmen you have to be patient with their skill levels and understanding of the game at this level. Remember, they were all stars where they played and excelled at driving, dribbling and shooting consistently, but in no way did that really prepare them for this new level where even overmatched teams like Maine still have players as good as the best players they faced in high school. Not to just defend Pike or the staff, but they're trying to mix and match and see what will gel long term as the kids progress.

As for players like Thiam, I'm very disappointed with his play. If he's unable to knock down a shot early, he curls up in a ball and disappears. By this year, he should be a consistent scorer of around 6-10 points and he has failed miserably. The kid just lacks confidence and consistency and it shows. As for Doucoure, I think we all can now accept that he will be gone by the end of the year. Yes, he was a so-called four star but we now see that was based off of size and raw talent and not an actual skill set. Our young players like Johnson and even Carter have surpassed him already. If he is to see any floor time, he will have to prove himself in practice. The fact that we have not seen him in the last few games tells me he may be forced to transfer at season's end. But still, I do expect to see him play, especially in B1G play as some of our younger kids will get into foul trouble. It's just a shame he couldn't have developed into a solid player for us.

One last final comment: As Caleb McConnell continues to develop, I would like to see him more as our point guard, because then it frees up Geo to play his more natural position as a 2 guard. If this develops, expect Geo to become more of a consistent player we saw at the end of last season. Geo is too talented to be so out of sorts. I think he feels he has to carry the team sometimes and tries to force it too much.

Myles had an good game but his defense needs some work. This was Maine and he had several inches over their bigs. We will see if he gets time against Maryland and their bigs.
