All the fretting by the board coming into this game was for naught. This evening by games end Rutgers was running away with a solid 91-64 win over Quad 3 Columbia. The 27 point margin was their largest of the season and in some ways their most needed win . Make no mistake this game was a MUST win for ANY future NCAA hopes to remain. Rutgers did that but they also did what was needed for the program and fanbase by securing this one in impressive fashion. It marked the first time ALL year long that Rutgers by and large played a complete 40 minute game. Rutgers came out firing on all cylinders on offense and while not perfect on defense seemed to gather more prowess as the game wore on and that wore the Lions down who didnt have the pop in them to mount a comeback.

Columbia came in 11-1. I know they played weak schedule but winning at a high percentage and this was a confident team. There was a win over Villanova in there back in November. Not a team intimidated to play the big boys and they were not tonight. I thought they were well coached and had a good gameplan for a two pronged attack on Rutgers either by the back door or by the three point line. I thought the Lions were flustered at first getting down 18-6 but they hung in there and stuck to their gameplan. Some timely 3 point shooting kept them hanging around in the first half a few times cutting the defecit to 6. It seemed like RU was having a bit trouble lowering the knockout haymaker and that would continue for about for the first part of the 2nd half.

To me Rutgers bugaboo all season long has been putting their opponents away and building off of leads. While Rutgers was in control and Columbia was not exactly able to contain the Ace (first half) and Dylan (2nd half) show, I think most Rutgers fans had to be wondering was the inflection point coming this time. All year long Rutgers would be in this position and rarely had success but tonight....tonight was different. RU overcame a bit of a monkey on their back. After Columbia chopped the lead to 8 on yet another 3 after a desperate save inbound that went to an open Kenny Noland, things began to change. 54-46 and then timeout. It was a turning point and a step forward for the development of this team and there really was no looking back after that.

Dylan Harper...now I am going to back up a bit to the first half. I havent listened to anything Pike said in post game so do not know if this was his intention BUT Harper was only 1-3 fg in the first half, some say he was hurt. As the half wore on and I looked at his stats, I sort of got the impression that with Ace unguardable by Columbia, Pikes message to Harper was to be the floor general. Get Ace and others the ball and rebound the hell out of the ball. I believe Dylan had 6 assists and 6 boards at half and RU still had scored 44 points with only a sole 3 point shot from Harper. Was this a little plan by Pike to shake things up. Dylan was then unleashed in the 2nd half and a couple of treys but it was after timeout that he really turned the jets on. Finding the seam in the zone Dylan got a layup then played great D in getting a steal and an easy transition score. He was relentless with yet another steal but unfortunately Ace blew the layup. Saw some impressive defense out of Dylan all game long. Everyone and their mother knows he can score but exploiting other facets of his game may be the key to unlocking some of this teams hidden potential. Lets watch this going forward. It definitely does not hurt that Ace put up 17 in the first half. When Ace is making ridiculous NBA shots with ease boy does that relieve alot of the pressure for Dylan to have to be the man on offense EVERYTIME down the court. By the time Dylan's superlative little stretch was over with dagger 3, Rutgers had a new biggest lead of 64-48 and Columbia was forced to call timeout.

The Lions would not get closer than 66-55 and in fact we saw the best Rutgers defense and focus in the last 10:20 as Columbia was limited to overall just 9 points the rest of the way and at one point just 1 made fg over 7 minutes. This was a team that had made 12 of 23 fg at one point in the first half and I mentioned I did not like they were still shooting over 50% at half. Well Columbia would go 12 of 36 fg the rest of the way including a hideous 1-13 stretch late in the game. Rutgers defense had worn the Lions down who were throwing up bricks. Credit the defensive effort by Rutgers because they stuck to it. Rutgers really stopped the back door and generated turnovers. Unlike the Princeton game, this time the strategy was concentrated on the interior and there were a ton of open looks for Columbia on the perimter. They went 11-28 but De La Rosa was just 3-11 and RU limited him to just 17. Only Noland with 16 on 4-5 3 point shooting was able to get going and Columbia just did not have the bench players to compete with Rutgers.

Rutgers when faced with the question "What are you going to do now?" responded better than they ever did this season turning a game where Columbia was hanging around just one run away from making it a game to turn into one of those old fashion feel good games where even in the late stages you were laying back in your chair and unbuttoning your top pants button. A first for me this year! So that to me is progress. No it doesnt erase 11 games and it does not mean we need to start talking NCAA again BUT it was a needed step we had to see. Winning a game by 5 or 10 is a go through the motions thing. Rutgers did not go through the motions. It was their finest full 40 minutes of the season. One can hem and haw about some stretches or some individual play or shots that are not going down but you cannot complain at all about the performance tonight. Crashing the boards, committed to playing defense and exploiting and attacking the wilting Lions late were all big plusses. Getting out to a great start was big to set the tone for the rest of the game to put Rutgers in position to control throughout. Ace was sick early and J Will and J Mike were hitting. RU was up 7-0 on offensive rebounds and I believe turned the ball over just 1 time while forcing Columbia into some early cough ups.

Individually it all starts with Dylan. A sublime stat line not seen for over 40 years at Rutgers. 16 points, 12 assists, 11 boards and 3 steals. 5-7 fg in the 2nd and only 10 fg on the night but Dylan provided so much more as said earlier. Best defense I have seen from him all year and he made his teammates look better and dare I say this team looked like a team. Ace was NBA Ace in the first half. I think 17 on 8-10 or 11 fg shooting. Ended up 11-18 fg for a team leading 24 points and also came down with 8 boards and 2 blocks. J Will had key stretches offensively in the first and then later in the 2nd half in finding the seams. Just 22 minutes, got banged up a bit but finished with 9 points on 4-10 fg and he made a difference in slowing down De La Rosa. J Mike had his best game this year by far if not one of his best ever at RU. I know everyone cringes a bit at him shooting 3s but he delivered a couple of daggers. 11 points on 4-8 shooting and a nifty 7 assists and 3 steals. Was definitely a key part in stopping the ball going inside tonight. If if if we could get that in Big 10 games...great tonight but going to need these nights every night in league play. Summerville very solid tonight offensively. Columbia really couldnt defend him when he got the ball...5-7 fg 11 points in just 19 minutes, 5 boards, 2 offensive. EO was solid as well in 14 minutes with 5 boards. Again against Columbia they look better than they are. Versus the Big 10 I am still unconvinced of the different liabilities they bring.

Unfortunately the rest of the bench really did not provide much. Acuff hit two very late garbage time 3s but before those 3 attempts was just 0-4 fg and did not like his game tonight. The others went a dreadful 2-12 including Hayes just 1-5 on treys and he got caught celebrating and RU was burned the other way with Hayes picking up a foul. Hayes had a couple of rebounds and assists but his playing time will go away if he cannot connect on a better rate from 3 and these were open misses. Derkack didnt have one of his best games either. Just 1-5 fg, he still forces some tough shots. Did make 3 free throws and got 2 steals so he did contribute in some other ways but thought he should be able to finish more against the likes of Columbia but he was limited to just 16 minutes as J Mike is really taking over his minutes. Martini put up 2 bricks in just 9 minutes and I just do not think its going to happen here. Awesome to see Noble drain that 3 with the shot clock expiring. I do not care what Pike wanted. There was still like 12 second left in the game so Columbia would get the ball..play the game and I dont mind running the score up. You do you Noble with the assist from Derkack.

Team stats we see the eye popping assist number. I dont know if its a record but 26 assists...WOWEE. Rebounding RU cleaned up at 45-31 including a decisive 14-3 margin offensively. Just 4 turnovers to the Lions 14. The only somewhat negative stat was the 11-34 32% from 3 vs the zone. RU was 25-42 on 2 point fgs and I think after a few tough possessions they generally figured out the Columbia zone

Onward and upwards. We close 2024 not where we want this team to be but a big opportunity to change course at a vulnerable Indiana Thursday and if....and its a big IF, Rutgers can steal that one, it sets up an interesting and opportunistic stretch of 3 straight games at the RAC that could salvage the season. Til then....HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE AND BEST OF LUCK IN 2025!

Happy New Year

Exactly what I was hoping for save Dylan going for 20+. He SHOULD have been approaching 10 assists in every game so far.. especially after A&M decided to take him out of the game.. glad to see him get over that hump.

Oh.. and Ace.. THAT was teh kind of turn-around J that is prefect.. he shoots it well when in rhythm.. but when he does these one on one moves to put it up.. yeah, some fall, but at this level with team defense being what it is in college... bad idea... just make a move to teh hoop to get a foul or dish it.. you can get plenty of turn-around J opportunities like today's with off-ball motion and friendly teammates.

D was much more.. ummm.. assertive? reactive? urgent? They paid more attention to both team and individual D this game.. it was good to see.

Great recap, had many same sentiments that this game was progress and a step in the right direction. Glad Noble shot that ball, right in Pike’s face as well, we need points and we need to win by as large a margin as possible. Good for you Noble! Question for you @bac2therac, where would RU sit right now if we had beaten Princeton and Kennesaw? We still would not have any great wins, I know we would be out of the tourney but curious if we would be in the 5-8 out or 9-12 out? Or worse? Not sure how much it would help as once again our best wins are PSU at home and ND and that’s not very good. Just trying to figure how much those bad losses are pushing us down.

Excellent recap. Though I wouldn't say the fretting was unwarranted. Lose tonight and Tournament was almost certainly out of question based on regular season play. As it is, still a big long shot.

We still would not have any great wins, I know we would be out of the tourney but curious if we would be in the 15-8 out or 9-12 out? Not sure how much it would help as once again our best wins are PSU at home and ND and that’s not very good. Just trying to figure how much those bad losses are pushing us down.
hard to say where the NET would be..even if we won each game by 1, the NET is more interested in effiency so NET would only be slightly better

yet the Kennesaw State loss is abhorrent to the resume. I think the Princeton loss can be excused because it would be one loss to a borderline Q2/3.

but for resume purposes, having a clean profile is an enormous asset. RU does have a Q2 win over Penn State who may or may not be a ncaa team so that is a start, they have an everyday improving sos that will wind up in the top 50 if not top 30..their nonconference sos will probably end up under 150 so its passable...but truthfully NEEDS to be much tougher going forward. Put those Q3 losses as wins and RU is 5-3 in Q1/2/3 which is a decent starting point. I wouldnt have RU in the field at 10-3 but they would definitely be considered and but probably not even the first four out but in the last grouping of 16 out. Remember look at all the Big 10 schools right now competing for bids...only Minnesota, Washington and USC really do not have shots. RU would be just above them....Nebby, Northwestern, Iowa, Indiana probably all far short at the moment. I would have Oregon, UCLA, Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Maryland, Purdue, Wisconsin and Ohio State in with Penn State likely just out

Good recap but.....and RU still had scored 44 points with only a sole 3 point shot from Harper. Was this a little plan by Pike to shake things up.

Lol. This was all Harper. He didnt force it and made a number of excellent passes. Pike would have to be fired if his plan was to get JDavis shots in the 1st half instead of Harper.

If Harper shoots 3 times in the 1st half in any future game, I'm likely going to blow a gasket. Davis with how many shots in the 1st half? Lathan trying to post up in the 2nd half when Dylan had it on the wing. Pike just can't bring himself to define everyone's role offensively.

We didn't seem to know what to do on numerous offensive possessions. Having Dylan and Ace hid that. Ace was killing it in the 1st half from the foul line. Why didnt the staff have Ace at the foul line at all in the 2nd half? All they think about is defense.

That effort Dylan put into defense tonight was great. Getting that Columbia player called for that 5 second count, and just the hustle for turnovers and rebounds. Plus the assists and clear chemistry with Bailey and Davis in particular. I was at the game tonight - I don't think I've ever seen a college basketball player as good as him. So polished at his age and yet he's only going to continue to get better.

The team (as Pike likes to say) shared the ball today. Our playmakers got into the paint and found open shooters/cutters. In my opinion. We need 1-2 shooters (Hayes, Acuff or Martini) on the floor at all times. Hayes has the second best plus/minus (Dylan is first), Martini has the best eFG and the team plays best with an extra shooters on the floor. RU can’t afford line ups with Derkack and JMike on the floor at the same time. Today, JMike finally was able to efficiently score but I don’t think we can count on that very often.

You posted this after watching the game?

Harper did have something on his knee when on the bench and he did not participate in 2nd half warmups. There is no way he should have been in the game over the last 7 minutes considering an injury plus having Indiana on Jan 2. At least he should have been yanked after getting the triple double.
Harper has sat on the bench during second half warmups every game this season.

He hasn't participated in second half warmups all year.

This is the Dylan Harper I want to see from here on. Assists and team rebounding for this team is key.

This was Ace’s best game in college to date. He didn’t force to action. Moved the ball even when he was hot in the first half.

Note to Rutgers players, when Ace is hot get him the ball. He should touch the ball on every possession when he is playing like he did in the first half. Let him make the decision. He moved the ball faster and didn’t force things. In the second half he seemed to stand stationary too much. When he is like that, Dylan/JMike have to get him involved. And Ace has to move more too.

Hopefully this was PJs worse shooting game of the season. He got the open looks everyone was calling for. But his shot was off.

JMike’s defense is needed. Best defender on the team. If he can hit open shots that will get him more minutes.

Liked Lathan again, did well in his minutes. Three freshmen in double digits scoring.

Martini seldom shoots. Would hope he has great metrics for someone who will only take premium looks, but can’t be relied upon for offense because of that.

Of the guys coming off the bench (I’m counting EO/LS as single starters) the one I’m most hopeful for a breakout is PJ. I think his D is okay, understands spacing, doesn’t try to do too much. If he can get hot for a game or two (say 3/5 from 3) I think he’ll be a nice player.

Don’t think we could have expected anything more than what we’re getting from the five. EO has definitely improved and that Lathan takes way too much heat for a freshman big.

I’ve been VERY tough on JMike but game is on upswing.

Within every game JD and JW earn my cheers and give me headaches.

Continuation of above plus all others elevating game a tick (if playing at a 6 (out of ten) get it up to a 7, if at a 3, get it up to a 4).

Every game is gonna be a war, but there is definitely in my opinion a path to the tournament. It could come down to a couple of wins in the Big Ten tournament.

Pike disagrees with you regarding PJ’s D. He gets minutes in the 1st half but isnt trusted to play in the 2nd half. It is going to take a lot of improvement for the staff to trust him defensively.

PJ needs to stop celebrating his made 3s and get back on defense

Rutgers played a great game.Columbia might have a slight excuse having played on Saturday and then Monday against Rutgers. The next game for Rutgers will be Thursday which will require travel on New Years Day to Indiana which leaves little time for game preparation.Nobody is going to feel sorry for Rutgers.Travel is only going to get worse with the addition of the four west coast teams.

Columbia played mostly zone
They actually played a lot less zone than I expected - maybe half and half ... and surprisingly started the game in man to man. When RU got to a lead - maybe at 18-6, Columbia switched to the 2-3 zone ... and RU struggled for a couple of possessions ... then figured out that Bailey should be the player flashing to the just-below-foul line area (which is how you break the 2-3 zone - by getting into the middle of it).

Bailey is simply uncoverable when he receives the ball just below the foul line in the middle of a zone - and that 12-14 foot jump shot is his bread and butter, and nearly automatic. Against ANY team that shifts to a 2-3 versus RU they should immediately shift the offense to Bailey flashing.

In the 2nd half, Columbia adjusted a bit and had 1 of their 2 "up" defenders in the zone sag to the foul line, cutting off the pass to Bailey at that spot (did not sag when another player flashed - like Ogbole - why oh why would you EVER have Ogbole flash there!!! - or Derkack - 3 open looks). But RU found another way to penetrate into the middle of the zone - with a screen allowing either Harper or Williams to dribble penetrate into the open middle from the top of the key - and either take the jump shot, go to the rim, or pass to the wing. Davis also got some penetration - but from the wing - allowing him to pass to open RUI shooters, especially Harper.

P.S. On Hayes: I do not care what his plus/minus is - in his case it is entirely deceptive. His defense is just simply, subpar. He CAN get minutes - but not if he misses the open 3. Against Columbia he got about 8-9 open looks, took 5 - and missed all but one. He was 1-5 from 3 in the 1st half, got a couple of minutes in the 2nd half and passed on 2 open looks - and was pulled. He has no utility unless he is making 40% of his 3's. The problem is that though he is 40% on the year, he has plenty of games like this one when he is 1-3 to 1-5.

P.P.S. Though not a huge part of this thread (and I will do a post mortem where I discuss the game more fully), Martini got 10 minutes of completely valueless playing time ... valueless to RU that is. More on this later.

Road games yes, home games no .Rutgers should be favorite against Wisconsin and Purdue and maybe even UCLA if they win the two prior home games.
Wisconsin and Purdue will be real close. bart says RU +1.5, but I could see us as a slight favorite. Going to be real tight. 1 of those games might actually be a pick em

Acuff, Martini and PJ need to do a better job of getting in a great position for 3's. Often they look lackadaisical and unnecessarily a step or 2 out of position when they catch the ball. PJ not as much as the other two, there is opportunity to improve.

If those three hit threes, they get more playing time. I would imagine they have the absolute green light to shoot whenever on a good look. Those three should be scurrying around and always looking to get in the best possible position when they catch the ball for an opportunity to shoot.

I will say that some of the passes to Martini in the corner have been bad passes. Not enough attention to detail on the passes around the outside by some of his teammates.

Maybe someone may have suggested this before, but you do a nice job on these game summaries. Nicer than some of the blogs that are out there. Have you ever considered starting a blog, and getting some advertising to get a little $$$ for your efforts?

PJ needs to stop celebrating his made 3s and get back on defense
Is this your critique of his game. Haven’t been counting, but not sure how often that many celebrations have hurt us.

I think the comments are PJ are skewed to the negative. You reject his plus minus saying they’re entirely meaningless, but I think an argument can be made that depending upon many factors, especially who else is on the floor and what the individual players being asked to do plus minus is more often than not meaningless so it does not apply to PJs specifically. You also said that his defense is either subpar or very subpar there’s truth to that, but there are other players on the Painter team who is this? but I’d say that I’ve seen Jeremiah and Ace dead blown by many times or missed assignments. Many times, and that goes on mentioned may be fairly, and that their office is more varied and effective but the fact remains that there are plenty of things needed to be worked on defensively. Finally you dismiss is 40% shooting from three because one game it’ll be very good and another game. Quite poor. I’m sure this is the case with plenty of players but 40% over. Over a 13 game stretch is still 40%. A few hot games mixed in with a field goal. Games over that stretch is neither in another self for plus or minus in terms of wins. That is a one for five game may not influence the outcome, wear a four for seven game they win it for us.

Happy Recap! Let’s Go Mets!!

It’s such a treat watching Ace and Dylan.

Even if the year turns into a total disaster, it’s fun watching players who not only will play in the NBA but will be stars. I was also amazed how many of Dylan’s rebounds were one armed. I’m not sure I’ve seen that by a guard.

Thought the alley oop pass from Dylan to Ace might have been the pass of the year. Somerville backward pass #2.

We needed a blowout win against a team that beat Nova and had only loss.

I thought Ogbole, who is slowly but surely improving, and JWill were very good early. Wish JWill would do it for 40.

JMike had possibly his best offensive game. I was even more impressed by the lack of turnovers.

Derkack was quiet but does his thing and draws fouls. Thankfully he was 3-3.

PJ was an enigma. 4 of the 5 shots were great wide open threes. He hits two more in the first half we are up by 15 instead of a single digit lead. Is it going to come? Or are we doomed to Thiam and Gavin and it never comes. Like his spirit but too much celebrating after one basket.

I wasn’t down on Martini yesterday. No real minutes.

Now the negative, hard to get mad at JMike but the last two first half’s he has not been good defensively at all. He repeatedly gets burned by three point step backs, is slow on switches. Columbia should not have only been down 9 at the half. We gave up way too many threes. Picky perhaps but worried as it seems to be a pattern. And JMike’s steal at half court in the 2nd half and the ensuing break dunk was Jacob Young or Simpson like on the break. Kudos.

The other nightmare is foul shooting. Sure we went 8-12, not horrible. But four out of five starters going 1-2 is not going to cut it in a close game or a road game. Somerville and Derkack saved us from another disaster.

Finally I’m going to toot my own horn. I had season tix for the Hinson years. So I am maybe one of maybe a few thousand, guessing less, who saw Hinson’s triple double and Dylan’s triple double. Kinda cool.

Happy New Year and Beat Indiana!

NO.....Assist totals are going to be higher facing a lot of zone.
why? Doesn't zone just invite shooting over it or penetration? We have seen what Harper mostly does on penetration.. he scores or dies trying... but mostly scores. It is the quick doubles preventing penetration that invites assists to my way of thinking but I am open to correction if my thinking is all wrong.

1. no guard pressure slows things down a lot
2. you are beating the zones with passing over dribbling

Yes....but only fan to see Dylan and Hinsons triple double and be at Simpson's 8 year old birthday party.

Happy New Year's unit...and hoping for a RU and a St. Joe's (yes I root for him) NCAA berth and run.
