Game 24 Northwestern: Meaningful

Agree with a lot of your post but not the part about Rutgers having no business winning the game. We were the better team, played lights out defense for 12-14 minutes of the first half and part of the second half. Yeah turnovers are maddening but if Coach doesn’t go into the freeze up 9 with 5 minutes left , we would have had an easier close out and might have won going away. 3 straight possessions went to the shot clock , after getting the lead to 9 on well executed offense, with only one leading to a lucky basket by Geo. I did not like the strategy there. Hate when you play not to lose instead of playing to win. Almost bit us in the ass . . However, the biggest takeaway last night was that our freshman can ratchet up the defense and that will lead to run outs and easy points off turnovers the rest of the way . Plus we got away with Eugene playing like his worse game of the year until his late 3, layup and 2 foul shots .

Yeah, I rushed this post so I couldn't fully articulate my point. The better team won last night.

I was just saying that if you showed me our shooting stats and the turnover differential I'd have guessed we lost by 15.

I said "a big step back."

After they lost Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker, they went 12-6 and were an 8 seed. That's the neighborhood I expect them to be in next year. Heck they might go 14-6 this season, they'll just get a higher seed because the league is stronger.

They'll be at least a tier above Rutgers next year. Although we do always seem to play them tough.
They will finish a place or two below where they finish this year . I always love when we play them as I think we match up great with them even when they have Happ .

True but stats sometimes do not tell the story. Except for some difficult threes they hit all game they did next to nothing offensively . Their defense was nothing compared to how we played defense last night and we absolutely killed them on the boards.

Nate Reuvers is going to be really, really good for them. Different kind of player than Happ (more a shooter than a post guy) but they're not taking any kind of big step back.

My son is a recent Wisconsin grad and follows the program closely; he begs to differ. His big criticism of Greg Gard is that he has not recruited anywhere near as well as Bo Ryan. He sees them taking a big step back next year, but who knows. I don't follow them nearly as closely as he does. They will be very guard heavy next year with only Reuvers (who I also like) in the front court. One thing I'm certain of, however, is that they will not miss Happ's FT shooting!

Wisconsin picked up Happ's replacement with a transfer from Ohio State....Obviously he will not be as good as Happ, but will be a fit for their system.

I don't see Wisconsin falling off at all, their guards will have them solid next year.

With regard to Iowa, our perimeter defense will need to be very sound. While I don’t think we have to worry about getting beat off the dribble, they are pretty good in transition and get a lot of good off ball movement and cuts to free guys up for shots.

Offensively, you have to assume we will have to endure a couple of scoring drought periods which we need to minimize. I am ok with missed shots but the dumb turnovers have to stop.

Is that guy any good...Potter?

We will find out more about the Wisconsin guards when there is more of an allocation of the shot clock not in Happ's hands.

Anytime you limit the opponent to 5 offensive rebounds you are definitely controlling 1 of the glasses
This stat is incredible. Pike was probably so pumped about it

Happ's game opens things up for the guards. They will have a harder time getting open looks without him there for sure

Bac, glad to see you give Caleb credit and post that he is getting it done game after game since in the other thread you said it was one good game. Get on board the Caleb train. It's going to be a fun ride

Neither Trice or Davidson are break down guards. They seem to both have a clutch gene as they have made some tough late shot clock tough 3’s down the stretch of games. Our length should bother both of them going forward and they will be less open from three as we will not have to double Happ’s replacement and they will get less kick out 3’s. Potter is okay but no where near the skills Happ has exhibited . Like our matchup going forward.

Re Caleb...not sure what you are talking about. I have giving him credit all year. However some here are way ahead of themselves based one 25 point game He has had good games overall but i could also point out a few where he was no factor

Relax with him is all i am saying. Pike is bringing him along nicely without putting pressure on him

Saying he is better than Kiss and should get more minutes isn't getting way ahead of anything. If anything it's overdue

um WHERE DID I SAY KISS WAS BETTER..hello you are fake news

Caleb is doing well....the pitting of players vs each other and declaring some better than others and declaring who will play more minutes as other sit next year is hurting discussion around here.

Recent league history indicates that someone is going to fall off. If one looks at Kenpom rankings for the past ten years, most often there are multiple teams that are worse than 100. This year is the aberration, not the rule. Now, it could be that all programs are getting it together at the same time (there are ZERO teams worse than 100 this year), but that would be bucking recent history.

It really is way too early to predict next year. Injuries, coaching changes, and transfers will all happen. Some recruits will not pan out and other players will not develop.

If Rutgers can take another step forward and become about the 60th best team in the NCAA then recent history shows that it is very likely that they'll also move up the league standings.

Loll I didn't say you said kiss was better sooo actually your post is the fake news. Try reading it again

Taking a look at the last 15 seasons:
2019 - n/a (so far)
2018 - Illinois (102), Minnesota (117), Rutgers (130)
2017 - Nebraska (107), Rutgers (135)
2016 - Illinois (125), PSU (140), Minnesota (192), Rutgers (279)
2015 - Nebraska (121), Northwestern (122), Rutgers (198)
2014 - Northwestern (134)
2013 - Northwestern (132), Nebraska (136), PSU (161)
2012 - Iowa (101), PSU (133), Nebraska (152)
2011 - n/a
2010 - PSU (101), Iowa (174)
2009 - Indiana (209)
2008 - PSU (130), Michigan (137), Iowa (146), Northwestern (191)
2007 - Northwestern (136), PSU (147), Minnesota (160)
2006 - PSU (116), Northwestern (123), Purdue (155)
2005 - Purdue (123), Northwestern (124), Michigan (128), PSU (216)

Interestingly, the only B1G teams in the last 15 seasons that *haven't* finished below 100 in kenpom have been OSU, MSU, Wisconsin, and Maryland (only in the B1G since 2014-15).

Anyway, my take: We had absolutely no right winning this game shooting 3-16 from 3 and 8-15 from the free throw line and committing 15 turnovers.

My take away from NW game is that if RU makes 3 more 3pts, 4 more fts and 5 less TOs RU blows out NW. RU won in spite of poor offensive #s but found a way to win. That’s a good sign.

Agree that they can’t start slow like they did against Mich against Iowa.

GO RU
