Now this game...this game was fun to watch. Similar in score to some other games, but so much more to take from. Team showed energy right from the get go and finally got a chance to build some confidence with early shots going down. Geo Baker and Corey lighting it up early. A 47 point first half. RU just stuck to their game plan and wore a scrappy Bryant down.

So very important for this team to get confidence shooting the ball. Geo Baker a phenomanal game as a freshmen playing beyond his years. 29 points...7-10 from 3, 10-14 fg, I do not care what the level of opponent is that is the kind of superlative performance where you know you have something special. Geo's poise and demeanor as a freshmen is quite remarkable just 5 games into his college campaign. Looks like Pike did a yeomans job in practice trying to get some plays where Geo could be open for a kickout 3. Leaps and bounds better game by game.

Corey Sanders stepped up. This was the type of effort you want to see from Corey as a junior, so when 4 games into the season we were seeing just some run of the mill type stats and impact on the game, it was troubling. Kudos to Pike for pushing the buttons and kudos to Corey for responding like he is capable of. His flurry of offense led by his defensive effort in the first half really got the energy going for the team. 8-14 shooting, 19 points, 5 assists.

Game where everyone seemed to chip on some point. Williams gave his usual warrior effort and Doorson got some valuable time out there..much needed to get his feet wet. Thiam and Eugene didnt particularly shoot well tonight but that will happen and they just were not the focal point of the offense. Doucoure coming along nicely.

2nd half defense was very good...only gave up 20 points, really took away the 3 point shooting opportunities for Bryant and made them go inside where they were rushed and missed layups and RU did good job in disrupting any 2nd chances. First half D not as sharp but Bryant wanted to set a quick tempo...very okay with that because the offense was clicking....RU buckled down and wore them out in the 2nd. Bryant actually closed to 12 I think but then RU outscored them 20-3 the rest of the way. RU never wavered in their game plan and think Pike is doing an excellent job with rotations and substitution patterns for this game

This is the kind of feel good game that the fans can really gain some optimism in knowing yeah we might have a 3 point shooter after all, just need to be patient. And we will see, there will certainly be bumps in the roads with some of the young players as we hit tougher competition but they all seem to have had breakout games already so we may just be scratching the surface.

Onto ECU...I fear one of those Hartford type letdowns but without it being so close. Real season starts next Tuesday against FSU which is going to be a real measuring stick

Geo Baker’s coming out party was something to behold. Kid has a smooth shot, but he can score in multiple ways.

Agree on all points and would like to give more props to Mamadou. Having a big that can make that foul line jumper could be important in conference games to pull the opposing center out of the paint.

Geo scoring from deep will also open the floor and Corey may be the biggest beneficiary of that.

Great energy tonight from the usual suspects like Mike and Eugene, but also from Shaq and of course Corey (especially on defense).

A great night all around -- and a real treat for the fans.

this is great, cannot have a turkey effect on Friday! Going into FSU...what's that thing called? Tur-Dunk-Game? Bring it!

Williams was great in the second half driving to the basket.

yes....fearless

the team was much more aggressive on offense than in some of the previous games, you have to think that Pike was really getting into them in practice the past few days and it showed

I actually left the RAC with a slightly less positive feeling about this team than when the game started.

Sounds crazy, but I thought there was a long stretch in the middle of the 2nd half where our defense and rebounding were bad. Bryant never really made us pay. In that stretch we were outrebounded and guys were getting torched off the dribble. Maybe I look for perfection, but that's what I saw.

What got me down on '17-''18
1. Deshawn Freeman was going through the motions. His defense was atrocious and had bad body language. He has not had a good start so far and I am mildly concerned

2. Souf. Yes he is needed to give us minutes off the bench. Corey couldn't get a breather in the 2nd half because Souf couldn't defend a Bryant guard. Don't know if this will bite us Friday or in the near future, but Corey can't play at 100% at over 32 minutes

3. Thiam. I am sorry, but at some point we need to conclude he can't shoot and score at this level. This team desperately needs 20+ minutes without 0,3 and 5 on floor. Issa really gives us nothing. There is nothing he does well and too many liabilities. Maybe I am premature writing him off. Let me be wrong here.

4. If we get 1 injury to our top 6 players we are toast. Realistically it is doubtful we go through the entire year with nothing

Disagree with the season starts vs FSU. Our 5 opponents have been terrible. ECU is a major step up. 1 in 3 chance we lose on Friday.

Man. I was going to post that you would make a post like this. I actually texted someone who also posts here that you would make a post after our best game by far that you felt worse about things. So predictable. It’s what you do even if it makes no sense.

I do agree that I am worried about Thiam. Souf should never be on the court so they are just going to have to work in the rotation without him. I mean he was again beyond bad. It was a joke at first. But Dadika should be getting his minutes. He can stay in front of his man on D.

BAC, great points all around..Let me add a few:
1) The chemistry developing between Corey and Geo is starting to take shape and will only improve game by game; the superlatives to describe Geo's game would not be enough to describe how well he played and shot. Our leader and most important player, Corey gave us a glimpse of how he can carry this team and make everyone better. Tonight was fun but just the beginning.
2) The defensive intensity from the opening tip was great to see and I think if we start that way, get some steals and easy offense, then the pressure to shoot well lessens up a bit, and the guys play loose and shoot better as a result;
3) The Duke has some offensive game . He can flat out shoot that 12-15 foot foul line open look he will be getting and will also hit his foul shots. He has real good form. His defense and shot blocking tonite even though it was against a smaller team was awesome because he hardly fouled;
4) Shaquille getting some minutes was important because we are going to need him against the bigger teams in the Big 10, especially Purdue and Minnesota. He moved a little better and can help on the boards and for a couple of put backs;
5) The hustle and drives to the hoop and defense by Mike was outstanding as was Eugene's effort even though his shot did not fall tonite;
6) Those posters questioning the early season soft schedule, hopefully are seeing why Pike set it up that way. He is integrating the freshman, finding out if he can play 3 guards often with Corey , Mike, and Geo; getting Eugene and Issa more confident , trying to figure out the rotation and who plays well together. Coach will likely settle on an 8 man rotation, with Mike , Eugene and Shaquille or Sa but not both, coming off the bench . Unlikely we see Souf much in Big 10 play.;
7) Finally , we will go as far as our defense carries us..and if the team comes out with the intensity they played with from the opening tap , we will be in every game.

- Freeman needs to get more involved in the offense and you are not the first to notice bad body language.
- Souf hardly played after committing a foul on the Bryant Guard when driving to the hoop in the first half. The bigger concern that I have is what you touch on whereby Sanders and Baker can't play 30 - 35 minutes every game as Baker will hit the "freshman wall' at some point. That's why it's critical that Souf can handle meaningful minutes to spell Baker; Sanders and WIlliams.
- I have my concerns on Thiam as well on his outside shooting.

Don't want to be Debbie Downer because there were many bright spots:

- Baker. I love the way he plays.
- Dourcore - committed 1 foul maybe and had strong game defensively and offensively
- Corey - got the message.
- Eugene
- Mike Williams
- Shaq Doorson got in some minutes.

The games are running together. Cleveland state I believe was our best game by far. Not even close.

Our intensity all 40 minutes was very impressive. Tonight it was spurts.

knovking down shots makes things look better than they are and shooting bricks off good looks makes things look bad.

It will be interesting to see if ECU can keep it close. They beat Cleveland State 72-69 and we beat Cleveland State 70-38. We will be the best defense they've faced as well as their first road game. I'm guessing we're better by 15 points, especially at our place.

Trying to allocate 200 minutes. In a perfect world.

Baker 32
Sanders 32
Williams 28
Freeman 26
Duke 20
Total 138

Those 62 minutes
Eugene 20
Door Sa' n. (See what I did) 14

28 left and that's where it is Souf or Thiam or burn the tank of the Big 3 guards

IMHO, Way too negative after a night like tonight. But, I too was disappointed with Freeman. He has been way too inconsistent with his effort, intensity and decision making for a Senior captain. That needs to change.

He's being outplayed by Eugene right now. Freeman needs to keep his head up when double teams come and find the open man.

I would argue that you are thrown off by Cleveland State just being a bunch of brick layers. They had plenty of open looks. Bryant just happened to have some guys that can put the ball in the basket.

Others have said this but I agree that the one disappointment so far as been Freeman. He had a great game against St John's but since then he's forced shots , dribbled too much especially when double-teamed and just hasn't been in the flow of the offense. His forte is being around the basket , not making 15-18 ft jump shots. That being said, his role is different this year. There are more options on offense this year and Freeman needs to settle in and content himself with a lesser role on offense.

I thought Doucoure had his best game yet. Seemed confident in the offense , has a decent shot from 10-12ft out and has controlled his fouling. It will be interesting to see how does against better competition. I fear his fouling may again become a problem.

All that matters is whether or not we knock down shots. Geo and Corey knocking down shots and gaining confidence is huge going into the tougher part of the schedule.

By the way Green Corey is driving and kicking often. Making the extra pass as you asked for. He needs to stop making lazy passes at the top of the key though.

Intensity in the defensive side was more than fine.

I just do not think Souf is at this level...a two minute guy if needed when Big 10 play comes around
Bench play can be critical when B1G games commence where fouls and injuries have greater meaning.

our defense got better as the game wore on as did our intensity those are things I love to see. I think you are looking for perfection and judging too hard here. The positives of Baker and Corey which led to a much more fluid looking offense. Not sure what you are expecting out of a game like this. I think it was clearly our best game of the year. We are not going to play at a pace that holds our opponents under 40. The fact that we have evidence that Baker can shoot should alleviate your fears right off the bat. Not worried about Freeman because he didnt have to do anything last night, its not about him getting the shots. I would much rather get others involved

Souf will not play much...thats the bottom line

Thiam..yes you are being premature

4. agree mostly, but again this is a team that will have to fight for everything, it has less talent and shooters than almost all of the league.

Bryant has been a terrible rebounding team and got 11 offensive rebounds in the 2nd half. Sanders played the entire 2nd half save 1 possession and the 90 second garbage time. It was a 12 point game with 7 minutes left. We finished the game on a 18-2 run.

totally disagree, I thought Cleveland State game was riddled with inconsistencies...this our best game taking into consideration all aspects

making shots counts, of course we will look better, that is how it works

I don’t know how ANYONE can have a less positive feeling about this team after last night’s performance. I mean seriously FIG.

That said, I happen to agree with your three player concerns about Freeman, Souf, and Thiam. Freeman seems like he’s in a funk, and Souf is basically useless if he can’t even defend low major players, and I too am concerned with the minutes that our other three guards will have to play as a result.

With Thiam, I think we have to hope that he’s just a streaky player who is in a bad streak right now. Hopefully as he matures, his peaks will last longer than his valleys, and even in those valleys, he can contribute in other ways (defense, rebounding, passing).

The one thing that’s pretty clear about this team — and the main reason you (FIG) should not feel less positive about this team — is that we have shown an ability to win games with different guys playing the starring role. Freeman excelled against SJU, Thiam had a couple games where he carried us, Eugene carried us last game, and Sanders and Baker have each had a couple games where they dominated, and Williams has been instant offense off the bench in most games.

So, yeah, Freeman and Thiam have had a couple subpar games, but they will come around. This team is developing real diversity. And we finally found a guy who can drain threes.

To me, this all adds up to a net +

My take aways:

1) Absolutely love Geo's game;
2) This is going to be a great learning year for Doucoure who will sometimes hold his own, will sometimes show his inexperience;
3) Like the development out of Issa.
4) To me, Eugene and Deshawn are a toss-up; disappointed in Deshawn's decision making when he gets the bal on the post;
5) Good game for Corey, esp in terms of shooting confidence, but I hated those lazy passes in first half;
6) Was concerned with our defensive rotation at times--will improve but the competition wil improve by a lot;
6) I know their record and their ranking, but I thought outside of SJU, Bryant was the best team we've played. With the guy who was tossed early in the game, I think they'll be tough in their conference;
7) Do not want season over (from fan's perspective) by early Feb; hoping for a fun season all the way though B10 tourney.

Degaz,

Coming in to the season I assumed a certain production out of Freeman, thought that Souf would be a capable back up, and was hoping/wishing Thaim would improve.

Maybe Freeman turns it around, but he was completely disinterested. Souf was needed to give Corey rest and made it 1 possession. Thaim is a bad shooter. No way to massage it. Some of the misses he has had this year are frightening.

Yes. you have to feel good about Baker. you have to feel real good about Duocore.

If we were so good in this game why would our point guard need to play 18 minutes in the 2nd half against one of the worst D1 teams who had one of their better players get thrown out. Either blame for Pikiell for not being disciplined for taking Sanders out or realize the game was closer than it should have been.

Bottom line we need a 4th and 5th guard/wing to collect 28 minutes to provide rest for 0 3 and 5. we don't. If you combine that with freeman staying in a funk (i really hope this changes) you have a recipe for a 2-16 B1G record.

Thiam is not a bad shooter, Pike keeps saying that he is one of the best shooters on the team along with Geo. The kid is streaky, but we've seen what he can do when he gets hot like he did against Cleveland State.

Not in a funk by any means. No one is enjoying being 5-0 more than me (tons are enjoying it equally). I just thought we played this game in spurts and faced a terrible opponent on a bad night. I had tons of good things to say about the Cleveland state game. Our effort there was all 40 minutes.

I think Pike is playing the starters late in game to get them the feel together and to install you have to work hard to the end....No problem with Corey's minutes. Obviously Corey could have come out at the 5 minute mark and RU still would have won comfortably. Look Corey will play 34-35 minutes, sometimes more, most stars on a team do, whether thats good for his game or this team, yeah I expect the best players to be used hard, thats how it is everywhere, we just do not have the depth and there is nothing wrong with that. its year 2, help is on the way

FIG, in basketball as in life if you expect perfection you'll always be disappointed.

I love going to our games, cheering on our guys, and being entertained. The fact that the team is flawed makes me enjoy these victories even more.

I guess we'll see at season's end. I don't know you, and you don't know me.

True...it's basketball...missee shots, some turnovers, guys are going to get beat in dribble penetrate, beat for a rebound, etc. All you can do is try to minimize some of it and win the game. There is a reason why teams play help defense. So if I see Sanders or anyone gets beat, I don't get freaked out because someone has the role of sliding over and then other guys rotate to help and then recover when the ball moves. This is also why ball movement is so important on offense.....it puts stress on the defense
