- Apparently King Rice is very high on the UMass' Short List

- Would be a good opportunity for Rice to leave Monmouth as Justin Robinson graduated and hence I can't see Monmouth being as dominant in MAAC play.

- On the consulting team for UMass is Eddie Fogler - who is close to King Rice via their UNC roots.

- UMass had a top 30 recruiting class last year (they played as freshmen this year) and King Rice - who is a players' coach - may be able to retain the class.

- May be a complete irrelevant point however while watching the Monmouth NIT game last night, I thought King Rice looked somewhat disinterested.

- Also Monmouth's President recently resigned.

this program has become a tough sell for sure. Its been an afterthought for awhile in the A10 when it should be dominating it.

Still think UMass and UConn should give up their I-A football fantasies and take their basketball to the Big East. UMass-UConn would be a damn good rivalry in anything.

But yeah, they should be better in the A-10 than they are, although the A-10 is such a different animal now I'm not so sure what SHOULD be going on it.

The Big East is not expanding and wise to do so. when you get 70 % of your teams in you are doing something right. Having the round robin for games is the way to go also really gives you the low down on who the best teams are.

The small Catholic schools in the Big East have done a terrific job establishing niches for recruiting and the results on the court speaks for itself.

Ah, so that's the reason for the second collection.

Just kidding

Not sure if state schools mix in well here- we all recall the parochial schools don't play nice in the sandbox - certainly did not with us.

King Rice withdrew his name frorm UMass consideration last week as UMass would only offer $800K and Duquense is willing to offer $1M for the gig. Thus all reports are that the HC gig at Duquense is King Rice's job to lose. UMass is going after Dooley of FGCU and if he turns it down - then possibly Joe Becker from Vermont.

FGCU to UMass is going to be a hard sell. Last guy with success at FGCU ended up at USC. I think Dooley waits.

The difference is that Enfield led a team to the sweet 16 and since he beat a 2 seed he was the flavor of the month.

Dooley wants out of FGCU really badly. So bad that after last season he interviewed with Mark Gottfried for a job as an assistant at NC State. He's pretty fortunate he did not get that job.

I don't really care where King Rice goes but it's off-season so I guess why not have a thread about this?

that really says something about the situation at UMass right now when a school that hasnt made the NCAA in 40 years and has been so bad for that time is more attractive and can put up more money than UMass. They really did sell their soul to the devil with Calipari and are now paying the price

Marcus Camby is 60 years old? That makes me almost ready to collect social security. How can that be?

Duquesne offered nowhere close to $1M but they did offer to double Rice's current salary..He refused their offer but not for any reason you will ever read in print.

Have to believe the problem there is the Administration.

It strikes me that if you can put together a competitive program at a place like St Bonnie you can do the same at Duquesne.

It's a nice school in a great location right near Downtown Pittsburgh and you're accessible to NYC , Philly and Ohio which are all good areas for players and have a ton of Catholic HS's.

Why not ?

They were a final four team in the mid-90s with one of the best college basketball players of our lifetimes.

and your point is what...that was 20 years ago. Umass sold their soul and have never recovered

My point is that you made an absurd overstatement of fact and made a judgement based on that which was sweeping and oversimplified. In addition to a Final Four in 1996 they were in the tournament THREE YEARS AGO as a six seed. You are way off base.

Who would that be ?

Really? Marcus Camby.

When talking about UMass players don't forget Dr.J played for the Minutemen for 2 years.
But that was around 47 years ago

UMass has been on the decline...how can you say its not....

UMass has made ONLY TWO NCAA appearances in twenty years....21....only 1 in 19 years....so you seem absurd attacking what I said. They just fired their coach a former well liked player that got them to the NCAA 3 years ago. They are in the midst of a scandal and even the Winthrop coach just bailed on them. They are offering less money than a school that hasnt been to the NCAA in 40 years but please carry on in saying I am offbase to say the program has been paying for the Calipari issue. They had their Final 4 stripped from them from that time. 10 of their 20 seasons since Calipari left have been losing seasons. No do not confuse UMass with Dayton or VCU or even St Joes for that matter. The shine has been off this program for some time.

Rumors and More Rumors:

- Kelsey dropped out of the UMass gig because he may be going to Xavier.
- Chris Mack may be going to Indiana.
- Candidates for UMass gig: Joe Dooley; Joe Becker (Vermont) and Caputo from Miami

Hmmm makes sense as Vermont coach backed off Duquense. Wonder if Mike Rice can get Dukes job?

BE to BE?

don't see it happening. Xavier is a better job right now too.
No Mack going to Indiana, not Georgetown.

Mack is a Xavier alum and Kelsey was his associate head (both former players there too). The approach seems to be keep it in the family, so if Mack is going to leave Xavier would have Kelsey high on their list.

However, Kelsey has a bit of a weird history with his career. He took Skip Prosser's death very hard and struggled interviewing until the Winthrop opportunity.

I wouldn't be surprised if Xavier brings in Kelsey and then Steele takes a job elsewhere to get the HC experience. Steele could also be a candidate at Butler if Holtmann leaves, as he is an alum/former Butler player.
