-We met Brian Leonhard at the Hale Center. Apparently he's working out on campus.
-Hate the orange Tenn Vols QB pinnies

I'm just a 25 yr removed HS football player but I'll relay my buddy's comments.

-Laviano is the better QB right now. Better footwork and seems like he can "put the ball in the necessary window" better than Rettig can.
-Justin Goodwin was the best RB on the field today
-Cioffi is a ballhawk. Seems like a CB more than a safety
-Looks like Blessuan Austin is getting 1st team reps. Flood wants to give him the chance to start.
-Players are pretty "chippy"
-Vance Matthews is "a contributing college WR"
-Tariq Cole could be special if he's coached up.

Are you saying he looks more like a CB for his size? Because the ball hawk comment sounds like Safety to me...

Exactly what I was thinking.

He looked like a great fit at safety during the spring game. His bulkier build also indicates he'll be playing safety.

For years it always seemed to me like we played 2 run-support safeties and none that operated like a ball hawk. Theybalways seemed to hitbwell on runs... But often arrived in time to hit or tackle WRs on long routes. Rarely breaking up passes before the WR had a shoit at it. Harmon changed that a bit. I would be very happy with one safety that breaks up passes and gets ints. Let the LBs handle the tackling.

Why do you say Cioffi looks more like a cb?

Yeah I would think a "ball hawker" would be better suited at safety to be able to make big, game changing plays rather than at CB.

Good to hear he is still continuing his quality play from the Spring Game this year where he had the incredible interception which alone was insane....and then ran it back 95 yards for a TD to top it all off!

Thanks for the post!

Now POSTS LIKE THESE are the best part of the forum!

And also just a random thought, but how does a thread like this only have 402 views while other threads of WAY lesser quality have 1000's!

I am hoping.and guessing that since this thread is only an hour and a half old that maybe people just were busy with dinner and family stuff and won't be able to check it until late tonight or early tomorrow....

Goodwin has very good skills as a running back. The problem has been the fact that he goes down on first contact. Seeing that there was no tackling yet, I'm not majorly surprised he looked very good. James, Hicks, and Martin are very good when it comes to YAC.

Coach Flood commented today on why Hicks is so good, it's because his lower body is so strong and he runs thru tackles so well he wears you down, yet still has great speed.
You really don't see that quality in a running back until you need to bring him to the ground.
Goodwin will have a nice roll on this team, but we have three superior returning running backs on our roster on game day.
That's not a dig at Goodwin, that how good those three backs are.

Thanks for the pair of eyes Trooper!

If we can get any kind of consistency from the QB position and this OL can gel, we could have a special running game this season.

Read that Blessaun and Wharton are the first team CBs. No Boggs ? Is he on the field practicing ?

The RB situation is interesting as I wasn't expecting to hear Goodwin's name mentioned in the top tier of our RBs. I thought it was pretty clear from watching the games last year that there was substantial separation between Hicks/Martin/James and Peoples/Goodwin. Maybe Goodwin has really improved in the off-season (in fairness, he was already really good)
The more I hear about the progress of this Defense, the more optimistic I am about the season. These guys are not only talented and fast, but bigger and more experienced.I love Cioffi at Safety and think he is going to have a great year. I also think the secondary is really going to surprise people...all conjecture of course but these young guys seem to have boatloads of talent and Peele's aggressive style is fun to watch.

I would like to see Stephenson move back to corner and let Hester, Jacobs and Ciofi man safety.
