Greg Schiano: Rutgers goals, his controversial Giants play (Q & A)

Greg seems very religious. I don't remember as much last time.

He's always been Father Greg. I think living in Midwest, he just got to air it out more. Recall at end of Louisville game the first thing he did was look-up and point. Some of that religion wore off on me watching Nova ("Please God no")

I was wondering what people might think about his Paterno comments of him being admired etc..

I didn’t have too much of an issue of him admiring paterno “as a coach”. Question seemed strictly about coaching.

More of an issue with him saying it wa me a tragedy for Paterno,

See I don't pull it out like that "as a coach" and those two sections kind of go hand in hand...I still think he admires Paterno the man too not just the coach. I think he's always felt a closeness to him.....I don't know the answer to this but has GS ever said anything condemning Paterno's non action or anything of that sort?

I dont think Greg referring to what happened with Paterno as a "tragedy" means that he is absolving or acquitting Joe from his culpability in what happened. for anyone who knew and had a positive relationship with Joe, seeing how his final year of his life destroyed his legacy is unfortunate and sad, even if it was deserved.

I'm glad the whole giants thing wasnt rehashed. But hes in the right there. This whole idea that both teams agree that the game is over when theres time left on the clock is terrible. And then Coughlin makes this ludicrous argument about injuries and respecting players livelihood. And the media bought it hook line and sinker. Play till the game ends. Coughlin was caught off guard plain and simple. I hope we still use that play. Because it worked a few times.

Macmillan dictionary defines tragedy as: "a very sad event that causes people to suffer or die."
https://www.macmillandictionary.com/dictionary/american/tragedy

Greg's answer seems to be 100% correct to me:
"The whole situation was a tragedy for him and everyone involved."

It was a very sad event for Paterno and all of the victims and their families. People suffered and Joe died shortly after he was fired as head coach of Penn State. IIRC, he even said that he should have handled it differently. Of course, that does not make it any better for the victims.

That was difficult for me to parse out, because like many people, the whole situation seemed to reek of football over everything else.

Irrespective of your personal beliefs the “religious” stuff means something to kids and their families. There’s a reason when every kid commits and/or decommits they mention God.

Notice, however, that he says Urban is a man of faith - I don’t recall Urban putting that out there. Because while you say “every kid”, it is for a fact only some kids that feel this way. I always wonder how off putting it might be for the rest.

There are plenty of coaches who never mention God, faith, etc. I would presume the kids that don’t like the religious stuff would go play for them. I don’t even find this issue all that notable except for fans who seem to think that it is.

I think it is beyond closeness. There was an SI article after he was let go by Tampa Bay. It mentioned Schiano's prized possession was a framed tie of Joe's given to him by Joe's wife after he died.

Classy interview including the shout out to Coach Stringer, which is more than a shout out, really.

I’m sure there’ll be those that focus on the Paterno comment and try to stir shit up over it.

Agree with you on the Giants play. Always thought why do Giants get to decide when game over when opponent still has s chance. And I’m a Giants fan.

That is exactly the point - the kids that are not comfortable with this will choose other schools when possible. RU can’t afford to miss on players because they don’t feel comfortable with the coaches personal life. So why make it an issue?

Because all of recruiting is a sales pitch, and you have got to have one. The whole family thing is Schiano's pitch, and faith and love go along with that. So, some kids will receive that message and other's won't. Just like any other sales pitch.

Given the state of our program, history and facilities, I think it's a pretty smart pitch. There is not a lot to sell here. Chris Ash's sales pitch was that "you can be part of the process, a member of a team that will get better incrementally, and some day, long after you have graduated, the team may actually win." That was a bad pitch.

Again, who’s making it an issue other than you? I don’t recall a single recruit every saying I’m not going to this or that school because the coach is into God. Conversely, I’ve seen countless kids thanking God when playing, picking a school, etc.

I’m not personally into the whole God thing publicly when it comes to sports (despite my personal beliefs) but this is a total non-issue.

Wow you’re dumb. He was one of our best QBs if all time in spite of mistakes when he was young. I’d take him back today though Sit has an even stronger arm.

Yep, Nova was so great the Penn St DC promised his secondary 4 INTs - and they got them. He wasn't called "Turnova" for nothing. One of my fav games was when crowd booed so bad that GS had to put Dodd in, and he threw a circus catch to Sanu on the way to saving the game. Nobody said a prayer and threw into triple coverage like Nova. Omg it was so bad.

While Schiano is fairly public with his religious faith, I don't ever recall that he has made that faith as part of his recruiting pitch or his coaching of players. He has recruited and welcomed players from all different religious backgrounds, including none. As far as I know, he has not treated anyone differently because of their religious faith or lack thereof.

To be clear, I was saying the faith, IMHO goes along with his family pitch. It compliments it. I fully agree that faith is not a basis for his recruiting certain kids, and that I have never gotten the impression all were not welcome regardless of faith.

And I am saying that I don't believe that faith is part of Schiano's "family pitch". I would be surprised if he mentions it at all, unless asked about it.

On the first day I met the woman I had a sense would one day become my wife, I told her my faith in God would always be the most important thing in my life. At the time I said it, I was just being honest - but after I said it, I was particularly attentive to her response. If she responded one way, I knew I needed to go in a different direction - but if she responded the other way, I had confirmation that I had finally found the woman I was looking for. Thankfully it was the latter.

Actually this has absolutely nothing to do with God and religion. If my potential new boss was constantly professing that he is a diehard, nothing comes before Penn State fan, I think I would be uncomfortable if he found out that I can't stand PSU and live for the day when RU beats them like a drum and that the entire football program should have received the death penalty. I'd worry he'd look down his nose at me, be defensive and hold it against me. Might sway me to skip the offer the offer and "take my talents" elsewhere, as the kids like to say.

Why would a coach want to make the >30% of kids that don't believe feel like they are not welcome? I also think that you not understanding this also makes my point. as does your contention that you would drop the women of your dreams for not being on board with your viewpoint.

Anyway, we can disagree about this. Can't stand Urban, but in this regard, I think he takes the better approach. The coach's personal viewpoints should stay personal since he needs to seen as an equal leader of all the players.
