Griffiths freshmen season has been a disappointment based on his ranking out of high school.His profile mentioned that he was one of the best shooters and that he was a go to scorer.What we have seen is glimpses of talent but mostly stationary position in corners waiting for a pass that rarely comes from Rutgers guards.Player development obviously is lacking .Bailey and Harper will be taking most of the shots next season but Griffiths can be effective if he gains confidence from the coaching staff .

So were Baker and McConnel clearly not hard workers because they were skinny freshmen?
That's not what I'm seeing. He certainly takes some 3s when he gets a look. In fact I think he should shoot more of those. But what I increasingly see is Griffiths being aggressive driving successfully past the perimeter defender, drawing a crowd of defenders, and not passing the ball to all the players he just got open, and then forcing a tough shot or getting turned over. He's also using screens and curls to get open. He needs to hit those shots more consistently.
The game at this level is slowing down for him, on O and D, but still too fast for him to be good. And he needs to shoot a higher percent obviously.
Yea, I don't see the immediate pickup of his dribble at all. Not sure what he's watching
I have not seen him take on a defender when they are in defensive position in front of him. He drives to the basket when the lane is there or the defender is closing out to stop the 3 attempt. I haven't seen him make any one on one moves. Maybe I missed it, I'm no expert but from my perspective he is missing that aspect .
I also didn't see his best game where he went for 20+ so maybe he showed some things there I haven't seen.

Maybe....we don't know how much, but gavin is partly where he is at right now because physically he is not prepared to play B1G basketball. I can't let it slide that people are giving him the "hard worker" tag. That is a kick in the face of our players that have put in the time to have their bodies ready for the b1G.
He needs to add muscle no doubt. No need to tag him as a hard worker or not a hard worker just because he's skinny.
The best read BY FAR in this entire thread. Somebody earlier said "he can't drive" or something similar and I spit my drink out laughing so hard. He might not LOOK "quick," when he's on the move, but his strides are deceivingly long, he CAN allude people and he gets places in a very good way sometimes where, in high school, he'd be able to score. Now....different game,...and ZERO coaching to help him grow this year, as a player on the court, let alone run an offense to set plays for the kid to be open.
Not a single person on the team, or coming in next year, will benefit more from a high-level offensive minded assistant coach IMHO.
I'm not implying it's coaching related. Younger players struggling to deal with the speed of the college game have a hard time doing two things at once. Some players can't see the court well ever. I recall one painful play vs PSU where Gavin drove from the wing and pulled two defenders. Now wide open, Fernandes set up at the 3 point line and held his hands out for the pass that never came as Gavin was stripped trying to force a shot. The pass was so obvious. Fernandes was expecting it and looked exasperated at Gavin. Was that coaching or just a young player too sped up to make the read?

3) Against Purdue Gavin fed Cliff - A SENIOR - in the. paint, drawing the defender on GG to double Cliff, and Cliff didn't look to get the ball right back to Gavin for the wide-open look from the right wing (which he loves). So, yeah, it's NOT just the true frosh out there, not seeing these things, it's guys who have been around and are in SERIOUS need of better offensive coaching
What I've noticed is if Gavin starts to drive and is cut off well he does look to pass. If he gets into the lane and beats the first man he is looking to shoot and not kick, but a lot of times that's when help is coming so a pass might be the better option

By the time he is a junior he will be a very, very good player. Right now I think he's been over aggressive and forcing up shots. I'm not sure that's going to improve his confidence.
I just don't get why people keep saying this. What have we seen that makes anyone sure that he'll be a very, very good player? I see no indication outside of his star rating.
Gavin looked good today on defense. He really is starting to get. When he is making a decision he is being decisive.

Gavin played well tonight except hitting his shots. Based on his career it still seems likely that he will improve there. But he should feel free to start hitting shots at his earliest convenience.
Completely agree. He even was one on one with Young a couple times and somehow didn't get beat
He's seeing the floor. Seeing his man. Making better rotations. No more deer in headlights look on defense
Next step is hitting shots. A few in and out. Next game he hits a couple 3's!
I am going to lean on the recruiting rankings and his confidence pulling the trigger.

He stands still many times over and that inhibits him from getting the ball many times over. I see the confidence rising on the Defensive side of the ball and now I want to see him being more aggressive in WANTING the ball on offense. Move with out the ball...use picks as if he means it...and call for the ball! Once that happens the confidence will jump on that side.
Once it happens look out because we will have a 4/5th scoring option and that will make us very dangerous to play. I equate it to Hyatt when he gets on a streak--changes our game. Thing is he is so inconsistent and you don't know if you get good Hyatt or bad Hyatt. Good Hyatt hustles, gets rebounds, and shoots well. Just only happens for short periods of time or is nonexistent.

Had some nice effort, fighting for rebounds, and passes to Cliff.

Thats the point...he doesn't move well without the ball or call for it enough. Clearly they aren't using him out there and only relying on him to be a catch and shoot type.
