I believe we've been in and out of the Top 25 this season 3 times and each time the next game was a loss. Is this correct? Is it because each time it was the strength of the opponent or do we just play better as the hunter rather than the hunted? Even during the good years under Greg in football, this seemed to be the pattern.

Games are won/loss based on matchups and location of the game.Indiana had the most talented player and tremendous crowd support similar to the RAC.

Nice post. I had no idea this trend has gone back this far. The fact 4 of those 8 games were losses to unranked teams.

i believe this is our 2nd time being ranked this year. First time, we lost to MSU on the road and now IU on the road. Tough games to win regardless of being ranked or not (not to mention, IU was ranked higher than us)
The main issue is we were screwed being on a 5 game winning streak starting with the Wake Forest blowout and then beat # 1 Purdue and beat down Maryland and were 2-0 that week then having to play the 3rd game on Sunday against Iowa before the polls came out on Monday. We lost but still ended the week 2-1 including it breaking a 5 game win streak and Purdue. We should have been ranked 19-25 range. But they screw us and only give us 13 votes total. Clueless national media.

Then we go on another 2-0 week beating Northwestern on the road and Ohio State at home and get ranked like 23 when if they put us in at 19-25 even after Iowa loss we would have gone up to 15. Once you are at 15 or above , teams have lost all year and still stay ranked. We would have as well. To go from 13 votes to ranked shows you how clueless media was about us.

We lose in a 1 game week at MSU and they bump us out , which never should have happened.

We then hammer Penn State who was hot by 20 and lose a tough one at Iowa , which wasn’t getting votes and respect until they went on the streak they are on now ( because of their early E. Illinois loss) . They do not move us back in.
We then hammer Minnesota by 35 and beat MSU at MSG for a 2-0 week and they move us. back to # 24.
That ‘s the history and why we get bumped after losing to a tough BiG 10 team on the road. If we were ranked properly we never would have left the polls despite the losses to Iowa , MSU and now to Indiana.

If they had us properly at 15 , we would never have been bumped out and the 2-0 week last week with all the ranked teams losing to unranked teams every week , would still have us there. The Indiana loss to another ranked team on the road would have hardly moved us if we were 15 but because we are 24, that makes things different. Interesting to see if we beat Illinois if they keep us in going 1-1 for the week at 2 of the hardest places to play in the country.

I'd probably call it a streak, not a trend. I don't think this is directional - it's just a bad run.

Biggest disappointments in there were the home losses to OSU and Maryland.

The OSU game in 2021 was the "revenge" game after Myles Johnson had fouled out in 15 minutes in Columbus and we squandered a 10 point halftime lead. We were cold from the arc (25%) while OSU was hot (42%), and got outrebounded - Baker had just 4 points on 2-10 shooting (0-5 from the arc), and OSU outscored us by 14 at the FT line.

Against Maryland we were even worse from the arc (23%) and were outscored by 16 aft the FT line. McConnell, Mathis, and Harper combined for 4-22 (0-10 3P) and 15 pts (7 at the FT line).
