Here's your #1 NBA 2025 draft pick

Don't be ridiculous. Of course he does. Ace is one dimensional, although much of this might be Pike's fault. He doesn't defend, doesn't rebound, hasn't shot well from the foul line, and might be averaging less than two assists per game. Quite honestly, he doesn't appear to have a high basketball IQ either. I heard a basketball commentator say that he saw Flagg score 6 points in a game prior to going to Duke and he was still the best player on the floor.
"Doesn't rebound" "doesn't defend" sometimes I wonder lol ..are people forming their own opinions or do they just go with whatever the narrative is? Best rebounder on the team, not saying much but he and Flagg avg the same amount of rebounds. Also where are you guys getting this from that he doesn't defend? Based on what? Leads the team in blocks..

When Dylan gets healthy we are going to go on a mini run. 3 straight wins.

He had 42 points, 4 of 6 from 3 and attempted 17 foul shots making 16…Someone was paying attention if they fouled him.

Why can’t Dylan and this kid both be great prospects.
They are. For some reason people need to denigrate Flagg to build up Dylan. Its silly.

What I don't understand about this narrative is who or what did pike give up by bringing these 2 players in? If anything it was a huge risk not bringing in better talent to surround them with. Recruits haven't panned out over the last couple of years. I like the class they have signed up for next year though. I just don't understand how bringing in Dylan and Ace can be seen as a negative for Rutgers.
I'd say he gave up his culture. You can really have your culture set on a team run by freshman.

The intensity and sophistication of NBA defense is exponentially higher than anything any of these players are seeing at the college level.
Nah…explain how Sloth Jokic is unstoppable. Intensity ratchets up in the playoffs and overall athleticism is higher but on a nightly basis games are merely offense exhibitions where players are most interested in their ppg for their next contract negotiations.

…who only chose to come here to showcase offensive talent. I’m sure our “players’ coach” sold them on that opportunity.

In short, if we had Flagg instead of Bailey this Frankenstein team that Pike assembled had a much better chance for success.

In other news water is wet and you’ll pay taxes in 2025.

Irrelevant stat line....Flagg is going to be 1st and in the long line of Top Picks who bust.....As long Ace and Dylan go in the Top 3 to 5, they're more than fine. Flagg doesn't have the upside of Ace or Dylan.
Give us your scouting report on Flagg and why it differs from NBA scouts and experts, not some media whore looking for controversy.

Answer: expert opinions differ from homer opinions. After every Rutgers recruit commits you see the same elated, orgasmic reactions here. Almost all of these same recruits later sucked and left, to be replaced by new players who are even worse (Martini, Derkack, Hayes).

These guys are already loaded and will be NBA rookies next year. Money is not as big with them. But I can't find any argument for Ace as a negative unless you can tell me the talent that would've entered the program in his place. And it would have to be someone pretty good players lol but I respect your opinion.

I don’t think Ace Bailey is “loaded” to the extent that hundreds of thousands of dollars don’t matter to him.

But yes without knowing details I can’t really make any argument. That’s why I said IF they ate up a lot of the resources.

We’re told they didn’t get any school-affiliated NIL. Therefore Shelby finds it hard to believe the incoming other players broke the bank. Instead, ISO (in Shelby’s opinion) Pike significantly overestimated the talent of all of them.

Team would still not be good...so if Rutgers goes on a late surge fueled by Ace and Dylan I feel like many of you would be quiet and frustrated with that success. The negative attitudes about these guys is crazy to me. Lol like Rutgers had a winning culture to sacrifice? Everything about Rutgers basketball was on the downtrend besides ace sticking to his commitment yet the posters on the Rutgers board are the most negative about them. People are upset Simpson, transferred, you want developmental recruits that will be here for 4 years despite the current climate of college basketball, you say ace doesn't rebound or defend, that Flagg is far and away better despite their stats being identical. The negative mindset is strong and those that don't even understand the game adopt it. This an interesting phenomenon lol maybe big time players should not go to schools like Rutgers. At a school like duke ace would have a 5 and 4 star supporting cast and a fan base that is proud of him and want to boost his draft status.

You've been on the board throughout. You don't remember all of the players pike tried to get in the portal? These were the backup plans. They struck out on the big man, the veteran pg, the shooter, the wing defender, stuck out on every single one of them. Then they brought in Acuff, pj hayes, dercak he didn't over estimate he just couldn't land the talent he wanted.

Not saying upgrading talent was a mistake. It’s more about who they are surrounded by. The rest of our team is a disaster in roster makeup. My point is more geared towards having continuity in your program with older players who have culture/system knowledge(aka Cliff in this example). A guy like Martini has upperclassman experience but not in our program.

Thank you as I haven’t really looked at their program and credit to their coach for that.
Maybe Pike needs to
Look at the freshman at this stage too and let them loose rather than these older players who don’t derive value.
He should be playing the 4 freshman, Dylan, Ace , Lathan and Grant major minutes. Ace should be pulled less as his stamina has gotten better . Lathan and Grant can obviously handle more minutes . Dylan has to get his health back.
In looking at Boxscores lots of the top guards playing 36-38 minutes. Smith from Purdue played all 40 and Blackwell played 37. All of the top teams that are guard dependent have them playing 36-38 minutes a game. Before ACE Baldwin got hurt the last 2 games he was playing 40.

Not sure about that. IIRC Martini was an early pickup and people raved about the pedigree of Acuff and Derkack, who certainly wasn’t an afterthought bc Pike’s recruiting his brother. The only player I’m aware of who Pike wanted and didn’t get was a lefty from Cal Santa Clara or Irvine some other Cal school. I don’t recall real interest in the two bigs Michigan got or the guy from Drexel. There’s the rumor that Sommerville insisted on no portal bigs be offered, and I believe that because Pike may have agreed as a hedge for a longer-term player.

Anyhow, tell me who Pike was looking to add but fell short.

This board is chock full of 99% diehard Rutgers fans who’s days are made and saddened by the outcomes of our games.

So your thought of many of us suddenly becoming quiet and frustrated if we had a legitimate run and success is bull shit!!!!

Duke’s culture seems just fine with 3 freshmen starting . . .
Their culture is different, but their youth is even better, and deeper than ours and they brought in veteran guards like James and Proctor, plus Gillis to keep thing under control. A much more talented team overall, really not a comp.

Definitely a more talented team, but led by 3 freshman, and ranked #4 in the country.

The big man from Drexel, Matt alocco was supposed to come with martini. There was another pg I can't remember his name but Acuff was brought in after striking out on alocco and this other guard and the wing defender I was referring to might be the same guy as the lefty shooter you are referring to. But you have to at least remember Matt alocco if you remember Martini. Idk how this isn't at the front of everyones mind. It was discussed here daily.

There would have to be a lot of eating of crows if these kids end up turning this thing around. We shall see...

No,
There would be acknowledgment these young men turned it around.
Just like every other fanbase in the country who’s teams do a 180.
Well hopefully some of those guys change the sentiment on this board Currently . A few negative posters are influencing everyone's opinion. Team would be better off without these two, it's such a ridiculous assumption. I think it's more so Ace that people have a problem with and I don't understand it. I would understand if the team was good last year..

That's the cause of the negativity, last year. Last years bad team was better after 16 games than the current team. 9-7 after 16 games. Even those of us that tried to caution against sky high expectations didn't think we'd be 8-8 at this point. There is just a lot of bad basketball being played, and coached.

You're not listening so I will have to repeat. You stated this roster is all we could afford even with the two stars not dipping into our NIL pot.
1. Martini was a very early commit, sought for leadership, interior defense and wing shooting. No shopping around. He was a priority.
2. Acuff and Derkack were prized gets too (their accolades), and Derkack's brother's recruitment solidifies that.
3. The probable commitment to Sommerville to not recruit another big, which eliminates the Drexel center (Williams as an NIL -related loss)
4. Hayes, who knows how high on Pike's draft board he was. Iowa wanted him too (had other high major interest). Doesn't matter to your incorrect opinion.
5. It was known all along that Allocco would transfer to the midwest, near where he's from. That, and even disregarding the incoming and existing backcourt players not named Harper above we wouldn't have anywhere near the minutes for him that he'd get at ND.
6. Same with Jadon Jones, the CA guy I mentioned (Long Beach St.) who's at Oklahoma. Not enough minutes and also went to a much higher profile program. Small chance it was an NIL-related loss.
7. Teams don't get everyone they prioritize.

So no, this was the roster Pike brought here and expected would be a good fit around Ace and Dylan. It's not about NIL. He's probably getting what he expected out of Sommerville but certainly isn't getting from Martini, Hayes or Derkack what he expected on either end.

Not having to pay Ace and Dylan made our NIL pot more than adequate to get better production than we got.

Half of your post is speculation.. alocco and martini were on campus for a visit the same day. There was another pg they were trying to get before Acuff as well. Not sure what you mean by not enough minutes. Alocco would start here no problem. You want to run with the Somerville story I'm running with the amari Williams story because it makes the most sense. No minutes for jadon Jones either huh? Gotta be kidding me lol Hayes was brought in after Jones came on a visit but chose to go elsewhere. Yes he chose Oklahoma which is what I meant by pike not getting the talent he wanted. Shelby just likes to be negative. There is plenty to be negative about without adding your extra Shelby sauce lol

If bringing in 2 of the top 3 recruits “changes the philosophy” of your team then I’d argue the philosophy of your team needs to change.

Shouldn’t every team’s culture include bringing in elite talent?

When you bring in and build your team around 2 top recruits and don't really bring forward anyone built on your philosophy, you abandon your philosophy. Bring in top talent and still have a Mag, a Simpson, a Cliff, a Wolf, a Davis, bringing your culture forward, then you have a chance.

Who’s being negative ? Of course I’m speculating. But None of your examples suggest we didn’t have the coin for any of them and we got the best roster we could afford. That excuse doesnt hold water.

I didn’t say Pike didnt get all the talent he wanted. I’m refuting your point that it was due to not having enough NIL for better players. Baloney. Pike whiffed. Crappy year for that to happen, but it did

Have seen it mentioned here often. Corporate sponsorship and not NIL that Pike appropriates.

I agree with most of this except Jordan. Kid certainly has his flaws but unlike the others wasn’t brought here as a one year deal. He has 2 more years of eligibility after this. He wasn’t expected to be a 3 point shooter. I don’t think anyone would’ve expected him to play 23 mpg but that’s a different story. By all counts 7 ppg, 4 rpg and 2.5 apg is more than anyone would’ve forecasted from him. If anything he exceeded what could’ve reasonably been expected from him this year.

Martini is the biggest failure. 43% shooting from the floor is grossly awful for a forward / big. Never mind his D. PJ is a terrible defender hand hasn’t been good from long range against real teams. He was a late pick up though so I’m certain he wasn’t plan A or B.

What is the evidence that any of the people mentioning it actually know what they are talking about? Have you seen the kind of nonsense that gets posted here?

It is certainly correct that they got a lot of NIL money that was not controlled by Pike. People assume this means that they did not also get Rutgers NIL money, post it here, and people read those assumptions posted here and accept them as fact. I've also seen the opposite posted here (also just by a random poster without any supporting evidence).

Certainly plausible that they also got RU NIL. My gut tells me that they got enough the other way so that they’d want RU to have plenty for a decent portal haul. But, who knows.

Shelby knows I didn't say anything about nil. Shelby was speculating that ace and Dylan drained Rutgers' nil budget and that's the reason Rutgers couldn't bring in better talent. Jersey legend simply said that several other players were being pursued before settling on the current group. Shelby then began to move the goal posts to argue against the roster being inadequate because of nil when Shelby originally was speculating that these were pikes first choice of transfers .

You’ve got it all wrong. Go back and look. Shelby refuted your point about not having enough NIL for a better roster, also adding that Ace and Dylan got their outside of the Rutgers pot.

But you did get one thing right, the proper grammatical use of “Shelby”.
