Hispanics and Blacks protest to get into Univ of Cal Berkerly

No Longer Black and White
Why liberals should let California’s affirmative-action ban stand.

There needs to be more information to make a claim that Asians are actually taking spots from whites. While the article states there are less of a percentage from 5 years ago, what it doesn't state is the number of applications. That number could have dropped, as well.

More data is needed, which that article doesn't provide.

A few decades of affirmative action can't erase 400+ years of systematic oppression. I don't think it's possible.

So your solution to 400+ years of oppression to one group is to go and oppress the other groups... Great Logic there! Saddam did the same in Iraq when he came to power... DUMBEST ARGUMENT EVER!

Calling someone a POS are very strong words. I hope that you are ready to back those words up. Let me know when and where you want to call me a POS to my face.
You would actually want to fight with some random anonymous person on the internet because they call you a name? Why do you care what some random anonymous person on the internet calls you?

Your overreaction to that guy's name-calling says even more about you than what you said about the person you basically slandered by presupposing he would show up for an interview in sagging pants, unable to pronounce the word "asked" properly just because he's black.

Or, perhaps he should take his tough guy persona straight into the RU locker room and let his sentiments be known since he is a fan of the team...or maybe half the team since the rest are pant-sagging, illerate fools except on Saturday's of course.

So what does this say about Michael Nutter:

PHILADELPHIA — Mayor Michael A. Nutter, telling marauding black youths “you have damaged your own race,” imposed a tougher curfew Monday in response to the latest “flash mob” — spontaneous groups of teens who attack people at random on the streets of the city’s tourist and fashionable shopping districts.

“Take those God-darn hoodies down, especially in the summer,” Mr. Nutter, the city’s third black mayor, said in an angry lecture aimed at black teens. “Pull your pants up and buy a belt ‘cause no one wants to see your underwear or the crack of your butt.”

If you walk into somebody’s office with your hair uncombed and a pick in the back, and your shoes untied, and your pants half down, tattoos up and down your arms and on your neck, and you wonder why somebody won’t hire you? They don’t hire you ‘cause you look like you’re crazy,” the mayor said. “You have damaged your own race.”

In the article above, the mayor was not making an assumption about how anybody would behave. He's making a point that when people do behave a certain way, they won't get the results they're hoping for.

What you did, although it might not have been your intent to do so, was make an assumption about how an individual you never met would behave based solely on his race.

See the difference?

Because of the way they pronounced the word "asked".
Who's "they"?

The only person in this thread that attempted to put a "pronunciation" on the word "asked" was @RealityCheck2 when he assigned that mis-pronunciation, along with the saggy-jeans critique, to @RU-Choppin-Ohio, a person he's never met and of whom he knows nothing about other than having picked up on RU-Choppin-Ohio's implied race.

Now, if RU-Choppin-Ohio posted a YouTube video of himself at the time of his interview, and in fact was wearing sagging jeans and mispronouncing the word "asked" while wearing an "I Love Brooklyn" t-shirt, then I suppose you might have a point.

I saw an article yesterday about Lebron James choosing to wear a less baggy uniform and shorrter shorts to send a message to youth about the importance of appearance. Is he racist?

There are 10 university of California locations or campuses which are at different levels. 40% of the students in the UC school system are considered low income. Cal Berkeley and UCLA are considered the best of the UC schools. They should apply to the lower level schools in the system.

New Jersey also has different level of schools, Rutgers New Brunswick, Rutgers Newark and Camden, Montclair State , William Paterson, Passaic Community College, and Ramapo College. The student at William Paterson most likely won't be able to handle the work at Rutgers New Brunswick.
BUT......... Our politicians and Admin allow less qualified students into RUNB. We allow students from NB, Newark and Camden with lower admission standards then any other student from NJ. Heck we have the Targum editorial protesting the new Honors College as being elitist. We wonder why some of our ratintigs are so low? This is one of the reasons.

Wow....I wonder how our team of mostly black and some Hispanic student-athletes would feel about some of the sentiments expressed in this thread. Some of you so called fans root for these players on saturdays but beside that most of them are inept, uneducated, products of affirmative action losers who should be taking remedial classes at Middlesex County College...but hey as long as Leonte or Janarion scores that TD then its all good!

The better question is, how would the team feel if it is mandated that the team comprise of 5% Asians, minimum.

Not sure who you're asking, but since it's right after one of my posts, I'll answer it.

No, it's not racist. Not sure how that's related to anything said in this thread though.

Wasn't really asking anyone in particular. It was more of a follow up to the Mayor's quotes. Was wondering if it was ok for black people to point out the importance of appearance to black youth but not ok for white people.

Anybody can point out to everybody that dressing appropriately for things like job interviews is a smart thing to do without ever being racist. OTOH, it's not hard to accidentally turn social commentary into a racist statement simply by not being careful with phrasing or word use.

And while I'm extremely far from being politically correct, I think phrasing and word use matter because we're not mind-readers and, especially on the internet, cannot easily determine intentions.

I always thought it was interesting that Affirmative Action basically pigeonholes minorities the same way Fran Lawrence did, only Fran Lawrence was nearly tarred and feather for saying it.

I love it when a bunch of old white dudes get together to complain....it's pretty funny.

This thread reminds me of a time when I called a company about an open job position (unskilled job as a college kid), discussed my direct experience on the phone and was told I was a probably good fit for the position....came in for the interview on the same exact day because I needed a job as a poor college student and was immediately told....."that job has been filled". My response, "But, I just called"......" I'm sorry, that job has been filled".

Similar to:

The sins of the father shall be visited upon the son a thousand times?

Ah ha! That proves it right there. They took one lokk at you and said we ain't hiring no black dude. You know how many times I applied for a job I was qualified for only to be told no thanks? Too many to count.

Another great thread for recruits and parents to read.

Are you saying we should stifle free speech and discussions of real issues in order to appeal to minority recruits and their parents?

There is a spot for you on the staff at Mizzou!

Pretty much all colleges in the nation do what you describe. Including those at the top of the rankings. In almost all cases, there are a wide ranging set of factors above and beyond academic qualifications that are considered. It's far from only being about race or nationality or socioeconimics.

So "qualified", as applied to college admissions, is not a very black and white concept.

That's when you want to have that little Dateline moment. Have somebody else who looks different go through the same process. When they show up and they say hey come on in, let's get you some paperwork to fill out etc; then you've got them. Time to shut em down.

For sure. How many have and continue to get a seat at the proverbial table, be it regarding a school admission, job etc due to a connection.

You appear to have either not read or not understood his post.

The thing you're missing is that he applied for a job that they told him he was qualified for just to change their minds when they saw him, apparently without any further discussion. He cannot be certain what it was about his appearance that changed their minds, but his qualifications probably didn't change from phone conversation to meeting in person. Unless he is eight feet tall and applying for a job as a midget, and failed to mention that on the phone.

In your case, as you presented it, the only person who thinks you were qualified was you. Which, if the job in question required reading comprehension, is not entirely surprising. [winking]

Not exactly my point. I'm not really talking about privilege here.

People get in sometimes because they've done something interesting outside of school. Like starting a business. Or having a consistency in volunteerism. Or because they've shown an unusual, non-academic aptitude of some sort (the arts is an obvious and common example, but there are others). Or because they lived through some unusual and difficult circumstances having nothing to do with race. Etc.

And the sign said, "Long-haired freaky people need not apply"
So I tucked my hair up under my hat and I went in to ask him why
He said, "You look like a fine upstanding young man, I think you'll do"
So I took off my hat, I said, "Imagine that, huh, me workin' for you"
Whoa, oh, oh

Your story sounds bad. Are you a long-haired freaky person? Did you have other visual differences that stood out and may have caused a negative reaction, such as piercings or tattoos? Were you dressed well? Did much time pass so it was theoretically possible the job actually had been filled? Yes, I know it was the same day. If you called at 8:30 AM and came in at 3:30 PM, it's possible someone beat you to it. It's hard to come up with any other reasons for their reaction upon seeing you other than the one you are implying - which would be unacceptable.

Yes, I'm an idiot. I went to apply for jobs wearing dirty wrinkled clothes. I also had a face tattoo and one of these......

The agitators are t he racists, looking to favor minority race over others who may be more qualified. Oh, and BT W, how about more white FB and BB players because they have been discriminated against for 50 years.

I spent 30 minutes on the phone yesterday with one of the people from the major donor office. I discussed my displeasure, explained my concerns, and laid out financially how their decision will alter my commitment. What did you do?

I have emailed the AD many times, and I donated to the GoFundMe among other endeavors. The response from RU was clear. They don't care. I am convinced they will not care unless there is some other media sh$tstorm. Frankly even if Greg Brown or someone else ponied up big bucks, the process would still get botched. Until then we as fans need to collectively remind them of money and scandal, not ethics, or winning, or arrests, or thinks normal places might look at.

How about we just lower our expectations for Rutgers to what we would expect from a 'Special Needs' institution. They're obviously not prepared to thrive in the real world.

This way you are never really disappointed and occasionally pleasantly surprised.

Because we deserve better. The current situation is unacceptable and frankly I'm increasingly convinced it has little to do with money and more to do with bumbling.

You know, I thought my questions were posed with respect and you answer with that? Heck, I even said that if the answers to those questions were no across the board, it certainly sounds race-related. You didn't even address some of my questions like visible tats, piercings, or how much later in the day it was. Thanks for elevating the level of discourse. o_O

Not saying we don't deserve better but reality is what it is.
