Other than true die-hards, the rest of the football world most certainly has us losing to the #1 team in the nation. At best, the gamblers are trying to figure out if we can somehow beat the spread. You have to think that playing our usual game will not be enough to win this game. Even though OSU has had some real WTF games this year, they have managed to win all of them.

Our coaching staff certainly realizes the magnitude of playing this team and I cannot wait to see just what new wrinkles are added to our game plans on both sides of the ball. With the comments by Meyers about showing the world just how good they are you have to wonder just how they plan to come at us.

This game may well show all of us just how creative our coaching staff is and how much risk they are willing to take. If we go down, I want to see something that shows we are not going quietly into that good night.

Agree...if we come out running on 1st and 2nd down and throwing 4 yard slants on 3rd and 8, I'll be dissapointed. It is what drove me nuts at the PSU game. Try to win the damn game.

On D it would have been nice to put a Spy on JT. as he runs almost as much as he passes. But in that we only had from Wednesday to put that in I do not expect that to happen and only 1 player IMHO will be able to do that job. Longa and he is slightly injured to boot.
What we will do on D, I hope would put pressure on QB blitz, as Indy has sacks against them we should as well. But JT even under pressure throws a nice ball.
On O we are a running team and McDaneils will stick to that rule. but we will get some passes open be it Carroo or Carlton. Again if Indiana can pass on them there is no reason we can not. That said when we do run it must be dives and not counter or delays. attack straight on for quick break out plays Make the initial block, as for prolong blocking will be our shortcoming. superior talent is hard to maintain long blocks that come with longer plays

This game is hard to predict. On one hand, Ohio State really has not looked good all year - they look very beatable. Indiana gave them a hard time without Sudfeld for goodness sake! But on the other hand, we pretty much said the same thing last year. We thought we could contain their offense if we employed the same strategy VT did. But then they turned on another gear and blew us away. You can argue that game against Rutgers was their "turning point" last year.

I agree that we need to try something different. Meyer is too good of a coach to try the same conventional approach - establish the run blah blah blah. I hope they employ wrinkles that totally throws them off. Maybe play Carroo and Agudosi at the same time. Put Laviano in with Rettig as a decoy. Crap like that. Ok, maybe not that last one. That's crazy. But you get the point.

This is it. And I too was frustrated and will be going crazy...play not to lose, instead of playing to win

We're gonna do exactly "what we do:"

Run the ball first.

Take into account the FACT that OSU has the #2 Pass Efficiency D in the nation and we might actually RUN MORE than usual tomorrow night.

** OSU looks "very beatable"? Sure...by a few teams in the Top 10! :scream:

Grant needs at least 7-10 touches, assuming he's fine. they HAVE to get Agudosi involved somehow, not even a debate. IF him and Carroo are in at the same time they can't defend both, and that will open up Patton and the run game.

3 catches against the 108th ranked Pass D in the nation and all of a sudden Agudosi can't be defended...by the #2 Pass D in the nation....now I know we're getting close to kickoff! LET'S GO RU!!!! [cheers]

Some trick plays to keep them honest. Double pass, fake punt/FG, hook and lateral, double reverse...maybe even the old statue of liberty. Even if it doesn't work, at least keep them from unloading on CL and take some pressure off the OL.

Defensively we should take some risks with our "Slice" and Safety blitz. Things we haven't used much this season.

If OSU has any weakness this year, it's in defending the run. So we need to be aggressive, but we need to run the damn ball.

I'd feel a lot better about RU keeping it somewhat competitive if #4 was 100 percent. That's the only area where we have a clear-cut edge.
Need at least one TD on special teams to have a prayer of being in the game late in the third quarter.

We have to come out and punch them in the mouth. Then, punch them again and again. Eliminate any intimidaton factor by them early, then see how they respond!
If we come out tentative, conservative, we lose big.

To our surprise both the MSU and Indy game we started off Passing

You are so sad for an alum and fan... just let people BELIEVE what they want...you're always attempting to deflate others and for some reason... influence how they think about a game and opponent...Did you ever play any sports in high school or college?... BTW: We're a heavy Dog to the tOSU band too... it's ok to DREAM B1G even for this inept team ...

Bob - your incessant, unprovoked attacks, since I've been back, are against board regulations, and I'm pretty sure you know that by now. Move along, mind your own business, and stop making comments that make absolutely no sense which make you look like a fool. You literally add nothing to any post when you attack me, and others, as such.

BTW - I wear my colors all the time, and I wear them proud, and you better bet your damn old ass, that I will be cheering my living head off, come 8 o'clock tommorow night.

MOVE ON.

But did you get a Block "R" tattooed on your good times? Now that would be special.

Who has time for 'incessant, unprovoked attacks' when we should all be reading the Rutgers Basketball Encyclopedia - Issue 1984 by Jellyman. Foreword by Chris Remley.

I'm on page 35,683 of this issue. It's where he begins to analyze the refractive index of various brands of backboards and how that impacted our perimeter game. Chapter 450 was about elevated humidity in the locker rooms that year and the purchase of a Maytag dehumidifier. A must read for serious basketball fans.

To those who think they understand college sports yet have not immersed themselves in Jellyman's voluminous writings, think again.

ROFLMFAO!!!

So you guys are okay with lots of sacks and INT'S then right? Cause dropping back and trying to throw bombs all day against this defense is going to result in one or the other.

Hate to break this to people so deep into the season but we are a play action offense and we will need to get something going on the ground likely before we can throw effectively. When we have a more seasoned qb, we may be able to pass first and work into the run but that's just not realistic these days, especially against Ohio State

How about some wildcat formations featuring Grant? Some triple-option action with Carroo in the backfield? Or do we play vanilla, emphasizing the basics: short passes, run at them, etc.?

Will play by the book, conservatively, until deficit and time require otherwise. Soft D between the 20s, vanilla offense with probably one trick play in plus territory.

Flood realistically playing for moral victory here, regardless of what he says. RU might just have one player (Carroo) if that, who would start on OSU.

They have not played up to their ability, which is why the QB change....JT is in there to motivate the others to play better. If they are still in a funk even with him, RU may keep it within two scores.

I expect a conservative gameplan.

I don't like our odds of running against that star-studded cast. I'd rather take my chances with a 3-step quick passing attack with an occasional bomb just to keep them honest. Ground game should be mostly draws sprinkled with simple north-south runs to minimize team speed difference.

To keep the defense from keying on inside runs, I would motion Grant pre-snap and run "ghost action" to threaten a reverse.

I would also incorporate "heavy" sets with multiple RBs and TEs and see OSU's personnel response. If they match-up keep LBs on the field, it would be interesting to see us audible to a spread formation and see if we can get a favorable match-up one-on-one.

So you want to go with 4 WR's?

On Offense.. throw on first.. have a lot of hot reads for blitzes.. spread the field and do hurry up... make it harder for them to bltz.. our max protect thing just makes it easier for the D.. so many of them are in tight they can blitz from anywhere and be in the area whether it is run or pass.

On defense.. make the blitzes more reasonable.. Barret will want to run often. Send a DB on a blitz.. ONE OF THEM.. someone who might go unblocked. Have others show blitz.. but not blitz. Its not rocket science. Urban Meyers offense with Barret should be similar to all those WVU offenses we have faced over the years. Hopefully, we remember how to D that.

I realize we are likely to lose and would be likely to lose based on personnel alone even if had everyone we expected to have this year. I'd just like to see us be smart about it an an attempt to win. Put the players in the position to make plays. Don't take them out of the game by losing it on the drawing board.

Did we attempt to win versus MSU?

We run for 240 yards each back scores a TD=28 points Then Carroo get the hat trick again add 21 points and Grant get one and so does Patton and Carlton
So we score=> 70 points and we eat the clock and even if osu never punts but only manage 63 it is still a Rutgers win!

I thought we had a shot to keep it very respectable with Jones at QB for OSU. Barrett is the better QB. That along with Meyer basically saying he is coming in to run up the score for the pollsters means it is going to be a rough night. To stay in the game:

1. Someone has to spy on Barrett. Not enough DBs to do that so has to be a LB, but two are injured. If he's not injured, I'd give that job to Turay.
2. Keep Bosa controlled at LOS. Denman is in for a rough night against Bosa. Best bet may be to have TEs chip block him on every play.
3. Gain positive yards on first down. OSU DL will make life miserable for Laviano if he is regularly dropping back to pass.
4. Spread the ball around on Offense. OSU will likely shut down a hobbled Carroo with Apple so the others have to step up, get separation and catch the ball.
5. Win the turnover battle.

Overall a tall order, but possible.

What is Carroo's status? What kind of injury does he have.

He is really good, wish he played at tOSU.

If OSU has any weakness this year, it's in defending the run. So we need to be aggressive, but we need to run the damn ball.

I agree with this. On the game against PSU, Barkley was having a feast on those running plays to the outside (mostly to the left, away from Bosa) over and over again. We got a trio of fresh, good, rotating RB's to do it.

Big difference between changing offensive philosophy and sprinkling in some wrinkles.

The reason why we ran effectively against MSU was because of the early bombs we laid on them. After that the safeties had to respect Carroo and his big play ability. The old 80s football 101 thinking of establishing the run to open up the pass may very well work against bottom feeder Big 12 teams. But not against the #1 team in the country. I can almost guarantee that if we decide to make sure we run the ball first against Ohio State before we attempt a pass that it will be a long day for the offense. You will not beat Urban that way - no way. He is too good for that conventional stuff.

I did that. Well, it's actually only a little lowercase tattooed 'r' most of the time. But when the dance team walks by, or we score a TD, it turns into a Block R.

Unfortunately you MUST take into account the BIG difference between the #2 secondary in the nation, OSU, and the 72nd ranked (MSU) secondary in the nation.
