I thought Ash knew how to coach a defense.

Not honeydicking for Chris ash or anything. And I didnt know that it was going to be THIS bad this year. But i do recall "the great Greg Schiano" struggling for years until they got it together.

Its gonna take a while longer to clean up the Flood apparently.

Can't blame Flood for terrible preparation and game planning.

We have more talent than in 2001 so the comparison is weak imo

Yeah. Look at it this way. The foundation that Schiano built was neglected by Flood. So as Ash tries to do some serious rebuilding, theres a leak here, some mold there, a pipe bursting in the basement...

We look pretty damn good so far in the second one quarter. Hopefully we can carry thru to the 3rd and 4th. Also hold for the quarter and we receive the 2nd half kickoff. Some of you folks need to think beyond one play or two. Given everything and a poor start I think we are in great shape and looking for 3 points before the half.

Grant...there you go!! Thank you!! And we get the ball starting the second half. Momentum in our favor? You bet ya.....

Unless you have not been watching in the past few years, either you have no clue or you are smoking something if you thought we were going to be fine.

I actually think our D is better than it has been in the last 2 seasons so far this season considering that it is a complete new system. Our kids are better conditioned than before no doubt.

We don't really have a serviceable QB.

Options teams will always stack of yards. Key is to keep them between the 20's.

I couldnt care less about yardage totals but bad teams have way too easy a time getting into our endzone

In the 1st quarter #31 made one of the worst plays ever. I love #31 and he is our best player but it is not two hands touch in the 1st quarter. That guy didn't have a green jersey on, take him down!
The defense is playing very good after the 1st quarter ended. So is the offense/special teams, scoring 28 in one quarter is pretty good.

2nd quarter he certainly looked like he was coachin' some D! I was wrong about this game...I thought we were toast. This is awesome

Yup..the safeties are a huge liability but that's nothing new.

Ohio St was/is stacked with nfl talent. That was not Ash. That was Meyers star studded recruiting class coming of age. Ash was just in the right place at the right time
So was Luke Fickell before Ash got there. So why did he fail and Urban bring in Ash to win the natty????

Wasn't Fickell the other DC? Urban always has 2 d-coordinators for the most part go back over the years and look. 1 of the osu fans said he Ash wasn't the main/head dc though

This thread implies that RU will get OSU type defensive talent. Kind of a reach

Unfortunately for us starting next week we won't have the luxury of playing some of the worst opponents in the country so falling behind by 14/21 and trying come back won't be an option.

See the UW game.

Defensive adjustments made after the 1st quarter worked like a charm

We are playing New Mexico. They lost to New Mexico State so let's not act like it was an impressive feat.

If we were playing OSU, Michigan, MSU, etc the ending would have been identical to the UW game. You cant sleepwalk through the first 1st quarter and expect to win any games in the B1G.

Kids line up right, are most usually in position, very few broken plays, few penalties, very disciplined. That's coaching. You can't do much more.

The rest is talent. You can't coach that. But you can recruit it. Give Ash a few classes to get it.

+1.

To me, Ash is not doing a great job for the first three games but deserves a pass for this year. Flood pretty much left the cupboard bare and as I watch the WMU vs Illinois, I saw that Fleck also had a 1-11 first year. Like Fleck, Ash is young and I am sure that he will improve as time passes.

Funny, I mentioned that we have almost no off side penalty on offense and next play we were off side. We don't have the penalties that we had with Flood.

Ohio State's defense was stacked with talent before he got there, yet it was garbage for multiple years between the firing of Tressel and the arrival of Ash. It took about half a season for Ash's system to take hold on defense. Ohio State has not looked back defensively since then

That OSU fan was incorrect. Ash implemented his style and system, and ran the defense. Fickell is a Linebackers coach, recruiter, and motivator with a "co-dc" title so they can justify paying him more

We have Flood's players, agree with Doug. Especially Kyle who missed out on those receivers three years ago like Blacknall.

New Mexico hit us with some new looks that they had not shown over last two seasons. Once adjustments were made we held them to 7 pts the rest of the game.
