I thought Ash knew how to coach a defense.

Hamilton should consider a career in broadcasting. The front 7 is a real liability and the back 4 don't scare anybody either. Other than that, better team defense after the first qtr; not good, just better.I wonder how we would have done if NM was at full strength.

Love these mid game threads. Time to piss off everyone.

For the OP: if you're going to bash Ash for the 1st quarter, how can you not praise him for the 3 other quarters?

For the Jimmie and Joe crew: weren't those the same players that executed pretty well after the 1st quarter?

Going down to Howard or New Mexico by 2-3 TDs is obviously disturbing. But just don't get the un-nuanced: either it's the coaches OR it's the players. The correct answer is, this is a work in progress team. First year HC implementing his systems that obviously do not match our personnel. Just like in every game so far this year we were better as the game went on, it will be telling to see how we end the year. Hopefully it's something to hang your hat on.

Jokes on us apparently.
Someone posted before the game that it was ironic that Greg could defend an option very well but could not do the same against the Spread .Whereas Ash's strength was said to be better against the Spread than the Option..

I won't blame Flood's recruiting for the way RU's D looks under Ash and Niemann,
but will blame Flood and his DC for not bringing out what talent they had and now it's up to Niemann and his position coaches try to make them as good as they can be with proper coaching.
That is not something done quickly, even with the best talent available.
This early in season, Ash shouldn't be blamed for every fault, players shouldn't be called untalented ( or have it implied) along with realizing Flood can't be blamed for everything.
On offense: a new system is being put in and with offensive players having been recruited by Flood because their talent fits the system he used, Ash needs time to
get the talent that's needed for his offense to succeed.
On the D: coaching by previous DCs and position coaches , in my opinion, might not have brought out the potential the D players had when they committed and now the RU D under Ash is paying for that. You can put that under Kyle's watch and place the D woes on Flood and his defensive staff. But that's only my opinion .

What a bunch of trash, you change schemes on both sides of the ball, you lack the talent possessed by the much of the rest of your league/division, you won 4 games last year and the program cratered with multiple disciplinary issues & arrests, by the end of the year the team rolled over and played dead and people are disappointed with Ash so far this year? This type of crap just indicates how clueless many on this board are.

Unfortunately for us starting next week we won't have the luxury of playing some of the worst opponents in the country so falling behind by 14/21 and trying come back won't be an option.

See the UW game.
Thanks for the analysis Einstein. Night and day d from last yearbut thanks for your input

Wasn't Fickell the other DC? Urban always has 2 d-coordinators for the most part go back over the years and look. 1 of the osu fans said he Ash wasn't the main/head dc though
Who were the co-DCs at Florida? I thought Charlie Strong was the man down there.

think about how many big stops the D made yesterday. Over and over it seemed like they made plays on third and short, fourth and short.

Really awesome to see. Great job, D!

I awarded a "like" for the post content. Wished I could have awarded a second for reference to "the Jimmie and Joe crew."

People need to have more patience than this. Despite being under-talented at many positions, we have seen flashes of a very good team this year on both sides of the ball. There is already a lot to be optimistic about. If this team continues getting better, even if we don't have the wins to show for it, there will be a lot to be excited about.

Well look at Washington first quarter. First play RU has a walk-on LB (Andre Hunt) caught in man to man mismatch with fast WRs. The OSU player under Ash in that package probably had 4 *s and ran in 4.4s (OSU LBs and SSs do). RU LBs never even played a down in B1G as Ash said so no surprise Washington goes after one to start the game. The good thing is RU seems to adjust to the problems vs manifesting an ongoing calamity

there are similarities between Ash and Schiano, neither coach has/had the personnel to run the offense or Defense they want to implement, need more speed and talent on both sides of the ball. At this point I will settle for playing hard and seeing improvement week over week as well as beating the teams we should beat and hopefully catching lightning in a bottle some Saturday afternoon and possibly winning one we have no business winning.
