Basketball INSTANT REACTION: Rutgers Basketball falls to No. 14 Illinois 86-63

Makes sense. Today, we played uninterested and didn’t have Shannon either.
We played decent except for last 10 mins. On the road and got to within 5. With Shannon this is a top 10 team we match up awful against.

We're pretty sucky, but Illinois also does this to people: 87-73 @ Michigan, 96-66 vs. Northwestern, 97-73 vs. Mizzou. They're damn good and I think also a uniquely bad matchup for RU

Direct message me is fine
On
Agree. Our only two NCAA appearances were doing weird Covid times. One was a play in where we couldn't execute a single inbound play. Last year we should have made the NCAA if we could finish. We could not and then got abused in the NIT. Not having high expectations for next year despite the talent because it won't be developed before they leave for greener NBA pastures.
Expectations for next year should be minimal. This is a bad coaching staff that does not develop players.

It’s a bad team
Hummel was right on our Guards suck
“Rutgers And Cliff Miss Paul, Mag was a huge loss last year cost us the Tournament “

This is not a good team

And to think Maryland beat them on this same court by 9 last week.

Maryland has a killer in Young. With the way Cliff was playing today if we had Young it’s down to the wire. It’s the same reason that SHU is playing so well - Richmond is a killer.

We don’t have one so everything needs to break right and it still might not be good enough.

Probably gone, agreed. He was an unheralded late signing red shirt. The opposite of an over hyped recruit
I'll go back and read the threads and then get back to you. I recall lots of excitement but then again I'm talking about RU fans and not the services.

"We are excited to welcome Antonio Chol to the Rutgers basketball family," head coach Steve Pikiell said. "In Antonio we get another big-time shooter, who at 6-foot-8 can do a lot of things on the basketball court. He's a high-energy guy. Whenever you can bring in a high-flying, high-energy player who can really shoot the basketball"

Chol is rated a three-star by 247Sports and the No. 5 ranked player in New York for the Class of 2023

(Guess it was a tough year for NY lol) .. he should have red shirted last year or stayed in school vs. Enrolling early.

You can’t go by what the head coach said in a press conference.

Pike can’t say we grabbed a flier on a 3 star who won’t help us for a few years and probably won’t be here all 4 years.

I dont know why some of our fanbase have blind optimism toward guys that basically no one recruited...guys like Geo are the rare exception...just look at Pikes track record with recruits that did not pan out. Recruiting diamonds in the rough is why we are in the situation right now for this season

Illinois was getting a lot of open looks with good ball movement.
We got plenty of good looks too. And the commentators were saying that Illinois has the lowest assist ratio in the league or something.

I do agree they looked great as a top 10 team should. But it doesn’t change my opinion that our players get plenty of good looks and just clank them.

I’d say less blind optimism and more like grasping onto glimmers of hope as we got our clocks cleaned in recruiting by programs not rebuilding after a 20 year dumpster fire with more to sell and offer. .

The biggest issue is it’s not like this is year 2 or 3 for Pike. He’s been here for awhile. He should know what type of player you need to recruit at this level. For the life of me I never understood bringing in Chol when we did. What was the point of a 3 star player who wasn’t ready to contribute reclassing last year.
I really wanted another transfer last year alongside Cam. Depth was clearly an issue. But no, we went with certain over powered and outmatched non big ten type players I won’t mention. We have a ton of holes going into next year. This looks like a wasted season for Gavin. Who consistently contributes next year besides Ace and Dylan? Maybe Mag?

Can’t blame him…but wow was he mis-rated. No wonder he fell to us.
Somewhere I saw a list of the highest ranked Rutgers basketball recruits. Gavin was at the top the first time a saw the list. Mike Rosario I think was #2.
When I later checked the list Ace and Dylan were #1 and #2. Gavin was #3 recruit for Rutgers...ever.
Sobering if you watch Gavin play this season.

I know..of course. That's the only quick thing I could find because searching this site wouldn't go back far enough to get the reaction around here back then.

Reflecting back…….

We cut it down to 5. Then wheels felloff. One thing missing was someone to calm the team down and slow it down.
Took a lot of energy to get the score closer so quickly. We needed 1 person to take over and settle everyone down. As quickly as the score got closer, it ballooned.

What about Ron Harper and Caleb??

The wheels fell off as soon as, down 5, Cliff missed a layup under the rim, got the offensive rebound, and missed the layin again. Illini run started right after that. Cliff had a good overall game, but I knew it was downhill from there as soon as that happened. Sigh.

It's not really that surprising. Fans always over value "diamonds in the rough" and don't understand "exception that proves the rule".

How many posts over the years said roughly:
"Rutgers doesn't recruit one and done players. Look at the 5-star players who disappointed here. We have a different type of program. We recruit 4 years players. HC Pike doesn't recruit mercenaries. One and done players don't win championships. Look at how Kentucky and Duke and Kansas flame out. It's teams led by experienced seniors. That the type of program we run."

Funny how that narrative got dropped once Ace and then Harper committed.

You (not you specifically but general you) can have all the "diamonds in the rough" you want.
I'll take the team of 5-star one and done talent every time.

Blue bloods have 4 and 5 star players all over their rosters. Counting Gavin, next year we’ll have 3 and still a weak supporting cast.

Am concerned next year won’t be much better than this.

What about Ron Harper and Caleb??
they had offers at major schools no? I believe Seton Hall was pursuing him as well as Nebraska.

Caleb had offers from WVU, Umass, wichita state

guys like Oskar, Derek, Wolf, Jalen, Reiber all were not recruited by anyone with a pulse although Hurely at ASU may have shown Derek some interest

sustaining success or moving up requires a higher level of recruiting, didnt get that with Pike for a couple years. Thankfully that is not an issue for next years class but its the biggest reason why we are in this situation for this season...and last seasons lack of depth which doomed RU in the end

thats's your evidence of him being "over-hyped"? LOL 🤣

that's standard press release stuff. Of course the school and Pike are gonna say nice things/ pump up the resume

but expectations for him have been very low from the start and have remained so.

Chol = over-hyped?

youre funny.

they were better than the bunch of 5 i just named which were all on the team last season plus Chol...another one i forgot about

thats 6 guys who would make up a bad team in the MAAC

Great . 2 pages of comments at the time of his commitment . Come on man, really? There are always some “looks like a good pick up” type posts when we get a kid.

But the almost overwhelming and consistent narrative on the kid is that he’s raw, a project, and not likely to contribute much (at least not immediately). There are some who think he can eventually contribute due to his length and apparent shooting ability and athleticism. I hope they’re right

But again the overwhelming consensus on chol has been very subdued - the exact opposite of over-hyped.

Yeah NOW everyone is subdued. "I recall lots of excitement but then again I'm talking about RU fans and not the services." That's what I said.

you come and say yeah it was only coach speak coach and then I show you the fan comments that 100% my original comment above. And no. You still reject it. Moving the goal posts.

"apparent shooting ability" lol. Guy is 1 of 12 this year and 14% career so far from 3.

If he was this long term project the they shouldn't have blown his red shirt last year for 4 games.
