Iowa fan needs advice on RU tailgating

Really, almost all trash is removed during the game. Certainly the bagged trash is.
Post-game tailgating can add some new trash, but that is pretty much all bagged and contained.

Well I just cleaned up the trash in this thread, so it should look much cleaner now.

Again, guys, thanks for all the great information. I will definitely reach out on the forum again in early September and hopefully coordinate a place to meet up. Really looking forward to it.

Our crew all grew up together in Iowa and, as mentioned, we do one Iowa road game each year. We are scattered across the country (Iowa, Salt Lake, Las Vegas, Denver, Kansas City, Phoenix). This will be our 16th annual trip. Normally we bring our tailgating trailer with us, but the logistics of staying in the city will not allow for it this year. It was tough enough finding a place to stow the trailer in DC for the Maryland game two years ago -- I can only imagine the nightmare of trying to find a spot in NYC.

Really shouldn't be that hard unless you plan on staying in the city during your trip. It's not too congested once you get about 20 min south of New Brunswick

Take the time to meet some RU tailgaters. Just walk up and say howdy. Almost all will offer you a drink and share some great food. They will be happy to welcome you to NJ. Most enjoy talking BIG football. Have a great time!

Have you never heard of the elks and is none of your group a member. There are lodges all over the country and a lot have areas for campers at a reasonable price. Even if they don't a lot will feed your at least a power line and let you stay for a night of two.

I'm gonna tap the breaks on this love fest for a minute.

It's great that everyone is inviting the Iowa fans to their tailgate - and I would certainly do the same. HOWEVER, we have rules, here.

They have to bring Corn Fed Wimmin.
I got one.....she is originally from S Dakota.

We will be looking for a fun group to stop and visit with for a while. I wish they would hurry up and announce the game time. We are staying in Manhatten and taking the train down prior. Kind of want to make morning plans or evening plans depending on game time.

What/who is/are the Screws I keep hearing talk of?

Definition #1 = More generally known as the RU Screw. Apparently a well known event to most Rutgers grads involving the administration's long standing policy of making students lives a living hell at the worst possible times.

Definition #2 = A well known husband and wife tag team of posters and big RU boosters. From what I read universally liked and respected by everyone they come in contact with inside and outside the RU community.

that would be me, MrsScrew, my husband MrScrew, aka, RUScrew85 and our merry band of a tailgating group. You are more than welcome to stop by for some food and a cocktail or 5. You will find that pretty much everyone in the Blue Lot is a very friendly place to opposing fans.

Have a group of 12 that are heading to the Iowa-Rutgers game for our annual road trip. Pretty feisty group that likes to have a good time with the other team's fans. Want to know the best spot to tailgate. Looking for a lively atmosphere/raucous environment.

Thanks in advance,

Blue Lot. Get there early to get a spot up front. Full Stop.

Thought you guys might want to see this. We can all share in our hatred of that perennial power, Iowa State.

Not sure what you did to piss them off but they are suffering so badly in the little brother syndrome that they have to resort to ridiculing the Big Ten

Don't give them clicks. I posted it all for you here.

Rutgers Fails To Make AP All-Time Top 85
By ClonesJer on Aug 3, 2016, 8:37a 6

Jim O'Connor-USA TODAY Sports

On Tuesday, the Associated Press released their All-Time Top 100 NCAA Football Programs. In extremely embarrassing fashion, one of the Big Ten's programs came in very low on the rankings.

 TWEET SHARE (28)
Yesterday, the AP released their All-Time Top 100 NCAA football programs based the following criteria:

  • Weeks in the Top 25 (1 point per)
  • Weeks ranked #1 (1 point per)
  • Count of National Championships (10 points per)
While a number of Big 10 programs performed quite well, their accomplishments were largely overshadowed by the dismal performance of one of the conference's newer members. The AP All-Time poll puts Rutgers University on the outside looking in at the rest of the Top 85.
The Scarlet Knights shamefully rank in 86th place, which is only 12 places above Iowa Pre-Flight, a program that only existed for three seasons. Even football "powerhouse" Fordham, the school famous only for being the sole academic institution named from a combination of a President's name and a type of meat, ranks higher. In fact, the only Power 5 program to rank lower is SEC bottom-feeder Vanderbilt, which is largely excusable because, come on, it's Vanderbilt.
Rutgers University was originally chartered in 1766 -- that's a decade before the United States declared independence. It is the 8th oldest college in the country and has been playing (and sucking) at football for well over half of that time - 147 years to be exact. In that time they have had a few highs, like the undefeated season of 1876, the NFL career of long-snapper Andrew Depaola, and the surprising fact that they only have a losing record against 6 of the other 13 Big Ten Programs. But largely, there have been lows, lots and lots of lows... So many lows.
Add yesterday's embarrassment, one that drags down the good name of the Big Ten conference with it, as one of it's most disheartening examples of athletic incompetence.
POLL
Is Rutgers football an embarrassment to the Big Ten, and the greater college football landscape as a whole?
  • Yes.
  • Yep.
  • Yeah.

Not sure what you did to piss them off

Last time RU and ISU met on the field, RU kicked butt in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Last time RU and ISU met on the basketball court, RU beat them in the NIT semi-finals.

I guess they hold a grudge.

Ah... that makes perfect sense. Not being an Iowa State fan I didn't realize you guys alreadykicked their butts twice. Yeah they will Harbor that for a long time.

what year is that photo from? it's not from last year...no tents or flag poles and there was nowhere close to that number of students in the front of the Blue Lot last year.

Aaaaahhhh 2009 .. Blue Lot glory days
Two points.
1- I'm old enough to remember when kegs were allowed. So in terms of stupid parting we had our share back in the day.
2- The Mrs. is right not really a tenable situation particularly with most undergrads under age which wasn't the case in the late Jurassic period, aka my undergraduate years.

1. Ah, the grand ol' days of being able to bring kegs.
2. Did they have electricity back then?

Agree with you both on the issues undergrad overcrowded tailgates ruin the experience for everyone nearby. The glory days refer to when the students actually did still come out to the lots in big numbers. Hasn't happened in last 3 years or so. Need to fix it both for the students and for the overall fan base and RU stadium experience. Just need a solution where everyone can be happy (which there are many) and this has already been discussed on here thoroughly

Dave, as you guys are flying in and staying in Manhattan, I would advise not to rent a car and to take NJ Transit from Penn Station to New Brunswick on gameday. You can either catch a cab or walk (under 1.5 miles to the Stadium with the bars of Easton Ave to ease your trip). Meeting up with a party like the Screws near the stadium to tailgate and you don't need to bring tailgating equipment. Post game, walk back to train and head back to The City. You are almost certain to see Hawkeye fans at Penn Station boarding the trains. You can buy beer for the ride down.

I would second this. As one of the 6 hosts of the Sweet Lou's Tailgate at the front of the Blue Lot along With The Screws, my suggestion be the same. Save the car rental. We will likely be arriving in lot by 7am for that one for a breakfast tailgate. If it is a noon game time the tailgate may be a little lower key/less crazy as opposed to the 12 Hour Blowouts that Michigan and Penn State will be, but fear not the beer and Taylor Ham (Pork Roll) , Egg and Cheese Sandwiches will be flowing.

I would be honored to introduce you Hawkeyes to the New Jersey Breakfast Delicacy of Taylor Ham (Pork Roll)

I happened to be near New Brunswick Station early on the morning as a train pulled in from NYC on Nebraska game day. The Huskers came flowing out of those train cars. I had not seen anything like it since we played in the Garden for the NIT championship.

Hey folks,

I hope you don't mind me bumping this thread.

Here are our plans, would love to hear your advice. We are staying in NYC and plan to take the train in early Saturday morning (now that the game has been announced for 12pm). Since we won't have a car for tailgating, we were planning to bar hop on the walk to the stadium. From what I've read, most folks suggest Easton? I've also ready George St? I'd love to hear any suggestions about what places we should hit up along the way or any suggested routes to take.

What will the crowd be like at these bars? We like to party, but don't necessarily want to be around college kids all morning.

One last question...we were planning to get there around 7am, have breakfast and then start partying. Will places be open that early?

Next weekend can't be here soon enough, looking forward to it!

Easton Ave is where the true RU bars are. George Street is more restaurants.

Just come to the tailgate lots. stroll around, say hello. Pretty much all of us will invite you in for a beer or 3 and some food.

Rutgers is mostly a tailgate scene before games, so truthfully I have no idea what kind of crowd you'll get.

No even sure George Street bars will be open that early??? Easton Ave bars are more thr college crowd, but again, not sure the crowd cause they'll likely be tailgating.

I'd suggest finding a tailgate. Think the experience will be better.

George Street bars definitely not open that early. Old Queens, maybe? Kelly's will be but that is off of Easton. Olive Branch?

Honestly, just skip the bars and come to the tailgates. You will have a much better time.

Hey folks,

Here are our plans, would love to hear your advice.
In case you missed it, I have a pinned thread at the top of the board that links to your thread and a few others that have been started on here with a ton of good information.

I don't know about the bars and restaurants, but I do know some of the tailgates will be going that early.

Ditto that!

Thanks for all the input. We are staying in the city and driving down that morning. Assuming it is a noon game, we will be set up and ready to go at 6:00. Our crew has been to every B10 stadium except RU and are really looking forward to it. Sounds like purchasing a parking pass on the secondary market is the way to go. Here's hoping for a fun time.
If you stick around you will be invited to join several tailgates including mine once you figure out which lot you select. Ref and green are closest, yellow and blue are pretty close then purple and Black. I have been in Blue, Yellow, green and Red and all are fun and should be a good time. Hope that helps

Agree. If u have time afterwards, hit up the bars.

I agree w/those above who are saying the best thing to do is head to the Yellow and/or Blue lots and say hi to folks. Folks w/invite you to join in (unless, as has been said, you're jerks).

Not sure what, if anything, will be open in terms of bar-hopping.

Thanks! In that case, we might try to do both.

I'd save the bars and restaurants until hours after the game. Then you can walk up Easton Avenue (back to the train station) and over to George Street. Easton Avenue will have the college bars and pizza places and George Street will offer the restaurants/bars. Old Bay is across from the Hyatt and is cajun cookin; Old Man Rafferty's is more of a traditional menu and good after a football game. Harvest Moon Brewery good for brews and there's more restaurants and a comedy club around the corner. More expensive dining a little further up George Street. But once you are off campus all of these places are within minutes of each other.

I did see that, tons of great info. I really appreciate it!

And thanks for all the suggestions, I think we'll pass up the bar scene before the game and try tailgating instead.
