Is Simpson Around Next Season?

So, um, yeah, at the end of the day, Rutgers two best players, that happen to be Caucasian, transfer?
I honestly thought he was speaking about Gavin Griffiths and palmquist. Lol had to realize he's talking about Spencer and mulcahy. Maybe what he doesn't realize is that those guys left late in the game for NIL money. Coaches didn't push them out, actually caught them by surprise. Spencer joined national champs for a chance to play in final four. Maybe mulcahy left because he felt he would be taken off the ball, but coaches planned on him being here. I understand you're trolling but don't want anyone thats reading and doesn't know these details to fall into your social Media attention seeking nonsense. "Look at me, look at me I'm bored so I'll argue about race with strangers for entertainment and an ego boost."

Career 36% shooter, 26% from 3. Average 2 TO per game this season. The facts are the facts.

I’m struggling to see a way he stays.

Small guard who is already being passed by freshman on this current roster, with Harper coming in
SImpson has stated he is looking forward to playing with the 2024 recruits because it will bring further success to the program. His performance has regressed since the end of lasts season but still has the potential to be a productive bench player if he can make jump shots off the dribble.

Unlike all our other threads, which are completely necessary.

I thought OP's question was very fair. Was it premature? Sure, IF WE WERE THE ONES WHO HAD TO ANSWER IT. We don't. We're fans on a message board. We can speculate as far ahead as we like.
I’m willing to bet JM and DS are both going to be very inconsistent this year. I’d be shocked if Simpson doesn’t have a shot to get his starting role back. Personally I just think it’s a little immature and ridiculous that we write off basically every player (football & basketball) any time they go on a cold stretch. Remember, Simpson was the guy that straightened us out last year in the B1G tournament

It can be very important to teams to have players come off the bench that can provide a spark to the offense. It's possible that will become part of Simpson's role this year.

Next season is so far away, especially in the portal era, that it is a waste of energy to debate what will happen at this stage.

Are you kidding me with the garbage? Maybe like with drivers licenses, you need to pass a basic basketball IQ test to be able to start a new thread here. I mean just stupid.

Derrick plays amazing D, gets steals and disrupts the other guards flow which doesnt show on the stat sheet. Always is the first one running on a fast break. One of our only guys on the team who can actually make a layup! Lol. And he’s only a sophomore !!! Sure hope he’s been “passed by” by Fernandes who’s a fifth year senior. I mean do you think before you post

I’m trying to ignore stupidity but this one is so extreme it warrants a response. Simpson actually played pretty well last night. Davis had his best game by far and Noah had his best game against real competition. They earned their minutes and Derek will get his as well. It does seem though that Davis is the truest PG of the trio.

Even if Derek's minutes get cut, the benefit of scrimmaging with Dylan for a season may outweigh any extra playing time elsewhere.

I agree with this guy. Different games there will be different guards who have better games. This wasn’t a good one for Derek but it seemed like a confidence thing. He could have bear his man so many times. He had a step on his guy but then would stop and bring the ball back out. He needs to drive and dish, drive and finish, or drive, stop on a dime and hit that mid range. He’s very good at all these but just did this maybe 2 times all game.
He’s a better defender than Noah, better finisher and shooter than Jmike, and he’s been the closer from the free throw line multiple games this year. I hope he bounces back and realizes what he’s best at offensively. Defensively, he played well this game.
As vital as Mag was to the press last year, I think the press is better this year when the guards are up front. When it’s Derek and Jmike, the press is elite.

JMike is a better floor general than Simpson. That’s already apparent just a few games into his college career.

The O slowed considerably when Simpson came in.
Too much dribbling.
If this continues his playing time will decrease.
If that happens he will consider his options at the end of the year.
In this crazy world of college sports every player will do that.
But this thread is severely premature.

Still not sure why a few people are saying he had a bad game last night. Maybe watch a little closer and then decide. He did a lot of little things that help win games. Someone said he can’t shoot? He’s leading the team in 3 pt % and it’s a very nice 45.6%. FT shooting has been great. I think his strength is his pull up but he’s been just a hair off on those. When those go down he’s dangerous.

Also last night was a game where the refs let them play physical underneath. Cliff had a lot of blocks and one foul. Derek in other games would get to the line but the refs weren’t calling it. That’s a game to game thing with refs too.

I am confident Noah will start all year at guard, but so far the following has happened: Simpson looked like the guy to start for a stretch, A Williams popped up for a few games and looked like the guy, and now JMike steps up and he’s the guy. I hope it settles in with one of them being the clear guy to start at guard, but we may deal with inconsistency and a bit of a revolving door. JMike looked great last night, but expecting that type of consistency out of a freshman may not happen. Some games it will be a Derek game and sometimes a JMike game…..that’s a good thing as hopefully each have the other one’s backs. I was very happy to see that Simpson was actually one of the biggest bench cheerleaders for JMike every time he scored. Good team leadership shown by a guy whose minutes were cut.

He scored the first bucket after the team went through a five minute scoring drought in the second half. The bucket was an important change in momentum. He looked aggressive on that play going to the basket.

But I agree that in general he has been tentative… perhaps unselfish in a way. It was only a year ago that he was anointed a better Geo (including by Geo himself).
He was also fortunate on that play that the help defender didn't read the scouting report and played the pass.

I just don’t see him accepting a bench role, nor should he really. While he has been inconsistent this year, assuming he plays better as the season moves on, he would probably be courted by a bunch of P5 teams to start next year.

I just don’t see him as good enough to start on what should be a loaded team next year. It will likely be more a Simpson decision then Pike one

As for people moaning I started this thread, piss off. I’ve been on these message boards for 15 years and a thread about a current player, their play this year, and their future is more on topic then 75% of what gets posted.

The reality is so many of you fans are delusional about how good a particular players is he because he’s a “Rutgers Guy,” and you get in your feelings about any discussion that might question their ability. Which I remind you, they are getting paid for nowadays

Surprisingly Derek's play this season has been the opposite of how he ended last season. It's a little surprising that he's not made more of an impact. His 3 point shooting has improved but his overall shooting is down from last year. I don't see him struggling like this all season though.

Is it a possibility that he could enter the portal - yes

- Ja'Michael's progress the rest of the season bears watching here.
- Inclusion of Harper and J. Williams changes the allocation of minutes.
- Portal transfers - RU could attract serious attention from some very good players who want to join Dylan & Ace.
- '25 recruiting class could also keep Derek down in the rotation. Pike's had some elite players visit already.
- He may want to be somewhere where he's starting or playing significant minutes.

Lots of factors involved here and lots of season to go that will determine some of this.

Also, ignore the clowns calling this thread dumb. You caught them off guard and they don't want it discussed. There are like 5-6 potential roster changes that could occur after the season for different reasons. Several of them will be worthy of threads that these self anointed board police will try to shut down immediately. Says more about them and their inability to look ahead. Just like the people here that can't see a player's potential and scream they should give their scholarship back and never play again.

Rutgers listed Cliff at 6’11”. He measured 6’9” at the combine. Rutgers listed Ron Harper Jr at 6-6. He measured 6’4” at Toronto. Rutgers had Caleb McConnell listed at 6’7”, he measured 6’5.5” at Oklahoma G league. Simpson is 6’1”.
Yeah, those are off by about 2", but I think Noah is bigger than 5'9" and JD bigger than 6'0". In the team photo, JD actually looks like one of our bigger guards.

Back to Simpson…fact is you just never know. Another program may pay him more, play him more, etc.

I would imagine that many other programs as well as NBA teams list their players a couple inches taller.....the point being that its likely all relative. For instance, JaMichael seemed within a couple inches of Richmond who is listed as 6'6" and is probably actually 6'4".

Always been that way, starting in HS in multiple sports. Yes it’s all relative.

where does the recent “Fire Pike” thread rank?
Of course a thousand Rutgers Al threads don’t count in this dumbest thread ranking. We can only debate the worst threads started by someone else.

Everyone every year could not be around next season in the portal era. It's just wayyyy too early to have any serious discussion on it at this point. We have played 1 B1G game. Soooo much bball to be played

Simpson hopefully continues to develop and will be an experienced energy spark off the bench next season

Add in that there are only 4 guards slated for next year and he is needed.

Davis, Simpson, Williams and Harper.

Not counting Griffiths as I see him as a 3 as I am sure of the back court ball handling against any kind of 1-1 pressure.
