Is there any chance Laviano doesn't start Saturday?

I think most of us agree that Laviano is not getting it done. He may have a good attitude and be a good leader but he just does not have the tools to work in this offense, and in my opinion never will.

Is they any chance that someone else will start against Iowa? I'm not saying another qb gives us a better chance to beat Iowa, but I KNOW that with laviano starting we have zero chance. In fact, I can't see us winning any games other than Illinois and maybe Indiana with Laviano under center. Someone else may give us a chance against the middle of the pact teams like Minnesota, Penn State, and Maryland. Keeping him in there could be the difference between bowling and not.

Do you think there is any chance Ash and mehringer see it this way? I hope so, but I don't believe they do unfortunately.

Think he will start. But he will have a very short leash. Question is, who is next? Could make an argument for Gio or Oden. Hope it is not Allen.

There is no chance someone else starts. But, by putting in Allen when CL was "frustrated," (I think that's the word Ash used), Ash showed that he will pull Laviano if Laviano is mentally off.. Ash must think that CL is the best he's got, which doesn't say much about our QBs.

Months ago Bobby predicted Odin starts by game 4. This was of course before Allen.

You have to figure if there were a better option he'd be in there by now. I'm guessing he starts.
This ! Why so many of you can't get this simple point?

You continually write posts and start threads , CL this and CL that. Meanwhile we probably have a 3 or 4 coaches that sit down every night of the week and especially game day and look at the QB position lineup on the wall and just shake their heads. Their jobs are based on wins and losses and they do not care what we think what the press thinks. They put the person out there who they think will give us the best chance of winning, Right now it is CL.

I sit in the stands and just shake my head with some of his throws and how he is put in a offense that he is not suited for but I don't think someone is better right now sitting on the bench. if there was , they would be on the field.

Thing is though, it's hard for me to believe oden would be worse. If he handed off or ran on every down, he'd be at worst equal to Laviano who has had maybe 3 good plays all season (and remember that we played Howard for 2 of those plays).

One thing that is clear, is that Ash holds every player accountable in practice. It sounded to me like Coach Ash was sending a message to the team (which I'm sure he's done directly) that how you play in practice will determine whether or not you play in games.

Whether Allen is really the #2 at this point, I don't know. What I do know though is that putting him in the game based on what he did during the week, should motivate every player on the team to step it up during practice, and that type of attitude, and expectations will make this team better by the end of the season at every position.

Ash wants everyone to compete and to do it every week during practice. Oden is going to need to earn the starting job and prove that he's ready. Laviano is definitely isn't setting the bar high, but I'm sure the coaching staff won't make a change to a true freshman unless they really feel he's ready. As far as Rescigno, Allen, and Rettig, it seems to be clear that these guys have been making mistakes during practice, and Coach Ash hasn't had a problem shuffling the backup role to whoever he feels has performed best in practice.

Hopefully Oden is a quick learner.

Don't know where you got that info. The reports from camp are that Allen has struggled with his passing.
How many pass plays were called when Gio or Tylin were in the game??? Allen had 2 pass plays called & both attempts had me holding my breath.

I only wish I could "like" this post more than once.

Both came in when we had a big lead against Howard, the plan was to grind down the clock.

Allen's passes were awful, BUT that was his first game action in what 2 or 3 years? I'd have to see a little more before killing him. Laviano continues to have several short passes thrown behind players. If he was only given one series to show what he could do, it would likely look just as bad.

Laviano is probably the best option we have. It's sad, but true; however, Laviano's passing is worse than last year (probably due to the new system) and his running game is non-existent. If Gio or Tylin can offer anything at all in the passing game, it's worth making the switch imo. Both provide much more of a running option. I'd like to see them get a chance to throw a few passes early in a game and get a full quarter or two to find a groove.

I think Laviano starts but has a very short leash. It appears to me that Laviano is the quintessential practice player who come gameday chokes big time. I've played with and against those types of players decades ago. I don't know what it is about them, but when the spotlight is on them they shrivel up. Yes, he threw a gorgeous ball to Harris on that long TD pass, but he can't hit basic 7 and 10 yard routes. He throws behind the receivers constantly or at their feet or over their head. Plus he hardly steps into his throws and throws many of his passes on his back foot. This is a recipe of failure and it's why IMO, he's not an FBS QB.

2nd pass could have been a TD the receiver was held....don't know why you were holding your breath there was ZERO chance the pass in the end zone could be intercepted

The whole point of the thread is if we think the coaches will change their decision this week. CL played poorly last week. We doubt know how close Allen or Gio are to starting. From the videos released this summer, Gio was throwing well and can run. Maybe he just needed some time and the coaches believe he now offers us the best chance.

I would like to nominate this as post of the season. Spot on. The concept of them playing anyone other than the best guy or as some people have said, maybe they are holding out someone else to save them for Iowa to not play our hand is just silly.

I think it's 100% CL starts but I got to believe that Ash and the OC will definitely have a contingency plan or some specific packages for Allen and Gio. I also have to believe that the leash is getting shorter with CL, especially if he starts out like he did on Saturday. No way in hell Oden plays against Iowa.

Its amazing a Big Ten team does not have a valid D1 qb on its team.

That argument would make sense if they didn't have Goody over Hicks. The coaches probably are playing kids that have bought in the most but not always the most talented.

RC, I think it's because we just can't believe that out of the other 4 on the bench, none of them can move the team better, or is just better then Laviano. And, if he is the best we got, it's really sad. Because, the kid is challenged, to be nice.

I predicted Allen first off the bench last week.
I'm predicting Rettig plays this week...lol
Ash has been very unpredictable with his personnel IMO.:D

Don't laugh, I would, do it, I would go with the g u y who can throw
the ball, the heck with trying to put it a new system we are not ready for.
The whole conference knows our QBs can't throw. Let's shake it up.

+1. Gone by the middle of the 1st quarter if we have our usual start of the game. 3 and out, 3 and out, 3 and out.

I want rettig to get an entire game, he has a gun, cant be worse.

I would be happy just seeing anyone besides CL for a few series just to see what happens. Regardless, I appreciate the coaching staff for their honestly in Laviano's assessment. I cant recall seeing a QB miss so glaringly on soo many passes, most of which were not long bombs, just 5-10 yards routes.
