Istanbul Airport terrorist bombing

Most likely yet another Erdoğan false-flag tbh.

It's sad to see what he's done to that country in less than a decade.

Very different implications depending on who claims responsibility, ISIS vs PKK.

My wife and I hav been through that airport about 12 times in the past few years including most recently with our son just six months ago in December so hearing about this hits a bit too close to home. Sad to see so many lives lost and feel lucky to have avoided any issues during our travels.

Granted anything can happen anywhere these days but I have zero desire to travel internationally right now. The world is simply not a safe place.

Was just there twice for multi hour layover trips in Europe. Airport is really nice and actually HUGE. Very westernized airport with all the common amenities , shops, restaurants , etc. actually a nicer airport than nearly all those I've been to in US.

BUT on our way out they did an extremely intense security check of passengers at the gate. With a private security company loaded up with like 10-12 people. Again this was at the gate inside the airport. Felt very odd and almost like they knew something. This was 3 weeks ago

Istanbul is a beautiful city. Or at least was. Not sure I'd want to travel internationally right now either, VK.

Just recently Turkey moved to strip the legacy of Ataturk. This is the country the EU wants to take up the slack for UK. Oh and they are the NATO member that lets ISIS members in and out over the border with Syria

"Turkey’s leaders plan to remove references in the constitution binding public servants to the ideology of the nation’s secular founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, as part of a comprehensive overhaul of the state, its principles and institutions under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan."

About 30 minutes before the bombing I heard an alert on the radio warning of a potential attack in Turkey. Sounds like there was notice but not enough specifics.

And about 24 hours from now, we'll know all about the people who committed the act and what their plan was down to the smallest detail. That's because the authorities probably knew who they were all along.

First Brussles and now Istanbul...damn. Thoughts go out...

Unfortunately, Having traveled Europe a lot in the past 20 years...this does not astonish me in the least bit. The total lack of security in the airports in Europe as compared to US astonishs me every time. Terrorists have figured that out...and I hope the leaders there wake up and do something about it...

So the ISIS snake Turkey and Edrojan we're playing with bit them?

Airport security is designed to protect passengers on planes but not in airports. Anyone can storm an airport in the US. The counter terrorism playbook is outdated. You can kill mass amount of people that are waiting in security line than on the plane. I said this to my wife at Disney when we were waiting to get through security.

VJK, you know the old saying. You are more likely to die in a car crash. Don't let them change your way of life. Just be more aware of your surroundings.

I understand that position but I wonder if that is exactly what they (ISIS) wants? We flew into Munich last year right in the middle of the mass immigration through Austria and Germany and many people tried to convince us to cancel our trip. We went and everything worked out fine. I think it would be akin to a foreigner being afraid to fly into Orlando because of what happened at Pulse.

I was in the Budapest, Vienna, Frankfurt, Nuremberg and Munich airports last October. I saw no difference in actual airport security from all the airports in the US. If someone is intent on walking into an airport (any airport) and blowing themselves up there isn't a whole lot you can do.

People forget that someone remotely detonated a bomb in a locker at one of the NY airports almost 40 years ago. My old boss married the widow of one of the victims of that attack.

sort of off topic...

but I got buddies flying through that airport this Saturday on the way to Kenya, this event will probably change their itinerary?

Probably not. My brother and his family were on a similar flight through Istanbul to Kenya the day before the attack. Scary stuff.

Isn't that exactly what anti gun nuts are trying to do?

there is no such thing as security, there is literally nothing to prevent me or a terrorist from walking into the subway or path train at rush hour and doing the same thing. How is anyone going to stop someone BEFORE they get to a security checkpoint at an airport? its impossible.

Agree. If airports become 100% safe through increased security, then you find a different target (mall, sporting event, crowded sidewalk, etc.). You can't have security for every person, everywhere, all the time.

Terrorists threatened previously lots of spots in our area, Times Square and the tunnels and bridges off the top of my head.

The whole point of terrorism to make you not do things you would normally do. So if you cancel plans, you hand them a win.

ISIS hasn't claimed responsibility. There are lots of other terrorist groups in Turkey.

There is a lot going on there, too much for talking points that certain people want to use instead of actually defeating them.
