J Will

I think that JWill is there somewhere.....should make a huge difference Year 3, being 24? years old, not having Ace and Dylan around. I think we have a different JWill.

Big problem doesn't go away.....he can't shoot in a sport where guards must be able to shoot.
Sounds like the kind of guy you'd want to take the last shot in a big game. 😄

Careful of what you wish for. You need to know what his price tag is and what other players are staying and going.

I cant have derkack, jwill and jamike coming back

I can have jamike and jwill and then make sure wvery other perimeter player is a good 3 point shooter

If jamike and jwill come back i have more money to fill other positions.
Price tag? What part of his game deserves a payday. You can't let a PG with a career stat line of 2 apg hold you hostage.

Why have the ball in his hands? He dribbles way too much and slows the offense down. I guess Pike likes this ?
Agree, but it’s not like there was a plethora of other options for Harper to pass to.

#1 Harper create his own shot…and we’ve seen in recent games he’s struggled with walk off opportunities

#2 Acuff, but no mobility to create if not open immediately.

#3 JWill, weaker shooter but mobility to do something in the final seconds.

stop making excuses for him....he ****ed up in huge spots last night and he hasnt been good all season long

you do enough criticizing for us both...nobody better than you at pointing out every single thing wrong with Rutgers...so i'm good thanks

it's not an excuse to say when a guy sells out on D his O is going to suffer. it's just a fact. so the end of OT 3 i'm giving him a pass on. dylan was trapped with no dribble and a guy in his face so he kicked it to him. wasn't suppose to be the play...wasn't what RU wanted...credit to USC for focing us into that shot. the FTs he definitely needs to make 1 of 2 at least. he didn't get it done. it sucks but you have to give him credit for how hard he defended which got us to that spot in the first place. sh*t he almost got that steal at the end when he ripped the ball away from their big but couldn't hold onto it.

i root for guys that defend and play hard. he also seems like he is very well liked on the team and i think he's a lot more of a dawg than people give him credit for he is smiling but doing a lot of "get under your skin" type stuff than most realize. like GRF said, if he comes cheap with a reduced roll i'd be thrilled he's back. i want as many guys here for 3 and 4 years as possible. with our limited $$$ i think it's one of our best ways to gain a competitive advantage.

the point is its not a one game thing....objectively he had a bad year and it hurt the team big time...very inconsistent from game to game and usually some headscratching bad plays or fouls or flopping on the ground. Last night was collectively just more of the same from him and the rest of team...you are getting fooled by a stretch of good play but ignoring the issues staring at you.

Program needs to move forward and you cant do that with guys who will hold you back...J will is a lesser Hyatt another guy that Pike brought in as a transfer that had issues his final 2 years. J Will missed 2 free throws, shooting at just 60%, had a terrible time receiving an inbound and also took a really bad shot holding onto the ball with about minute or less in regulaton not to mention his wide open 3 point miss where he is shooting 25%.

There is no reason to believe he will somehow morph into a new player since we have evidence he couldnt even step up this season with 2 guys as the main focal points of the offense...hes played 4 years and he provided zero leadership on a team screaming for it.

To his credit was best defender on the team.

Then again so was Simpson and driven out of town.

He lost that game twice tonight.

That was just piss poor and truly believe he was a main reason as to why this season was so poor
Harper hurt us AGAIN down the stretch getting picked and then fouling at the other end, just like Geo got picked against Houston. Why? because both are 2 guards and not point guards. When we were playing well and coming back, JMike was mostly at the point and Harper the 2. JMike doesn't get picked and we don't have JWill's awful play down the stretch, plus Dylan is free to get open, that is if Pike runs something for him.

the last of a true point guard is glaring...cannot inbound the ball to someone who you can trust....then acuff bringing the ball up, usc expertly denied Harper the ball and acuff was flummoxed, passed to J Will who just selfish dribbled for 9 seconds before taking an awful jump shot in a key moment

hellva job pointing out his flaws...no one better than you

i'm well aware of his game and i'm not fooled by anything.

he does try and do too much on offense at times. he is out of control at times. he needs to shoot it better. but he's also the best on ball defender we have. he's had a bunch of good to really good games this season that have lead to wins. he's also a leader and a captain. if he wants to come back at a reasonable NIL number with a roll suited to his strengths...i'm happily taking him.

the alternative is to get yet another low major guy and pray he plays well above what we are going to be able to pay him. nope...keep your guys you can keep. get one or two IMPACT transfers and let's get to work. trying to fill in 9/10 guys is going to lead to more of the same on the court and another 1K posts about everything wrong with the team next season from you.

If we have a budget of $2,000,000 (making sh1t up because I have no idea). Jwill gets $50,000 and JaMike gets $25,000 and you now have $1,925,000 to spend elsewhere

OR

Spend $700,000 on a Top 10 portal PG and have only $1,300,000 left to fill the roster. PLEASE don't blow it on lathan.
Out of J Will, Dercack and J Mike, I would take J MIke.

You can't be my general of the army and be smiling and laughing when a soldiers head gets blown off in battle.

This was a team full of soft losers. Blow it up Pike and if you're going to get fired, at least find some dogs who want to raise hell every night on defense and give you a chance. Not the puppy shit soft team I saw on the floor this year.

J Mike is a dog. Thats a kid I want on my team. Doesn't laugh, locked in and grinding every time he plays. I want him back. I want Grant who has an attitude on him. I can live with those guys.

Give one example of jwills leadership deserving of the C on his chest? He didn’t deserve it. It should have been stripped of him after his performance and actions at Kennesaw.

You want me to give examples of leadership when I'm not with the team in the locker room or at practices and I see nothing except what I what on TV/in person? Is that a real question?

It's like some of you didn't even play sports growing up. Being a leader/captain is ALL about what you are doing when none of us are watching. Half you guys want a guy thrown off the team if he has a bad shooting night and now you want to talk about stripping a guy of being a leader because we lost to a team we should've beaten. He earned the C because his teammates and coaches respected him. In general that is a guy I want on my team. Again, can talk about roles and $$$ and all that as well as that definitely plays a factor in all this. But it's like you guys see a guy smile when he's going through some adversity (hint: this is a technique taught by sports psychologists to actually overcome adversity) and you want him sent to the Gulag.

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^ 😩

You guys are morons. Without JWill this game js a 10-15 point loss. He fueled the comeback. Having him shoot the FTs and the 3 at the end was due to bad coaching and play drawing up. We should have never been in that position. We scored 7 points in the first 10 minutes of the game, that’s why we lost. Martini a starter, 0 points. Dercack and Hayes unplayable. That’s why we lost, not JWill

??

He had 6 points and 4 assists in 42 minutes. It's unfair to blame him solely for the loss but "fueled the comeback"? I don't think so.

I played a sport at this level, so I know exactly what goes into being an athlete. Not just cyo or middle school. And part of being a leader and wearing a C on your chest is being accountable and being a good positive representative of the program. I am not in practice either. But my eyes have not deceived me in person or on tv while watching him perform at games and events that I have been to. I continually see him playing to the cameras, rolling around, questioning every call, whining to the refs, flopping and being a bad example to a team loaded with newcomers and freshmen. So a sport psychologist tells you to openly joke with the competitors and perform on the bench while your team is getting blown out? I hope that’s humor.

And this post that you replied to had nothing to do with a bad shooting night or his athletic performance. It was questioning his leadership and antics over his 2 years.

you feel that way...

his coaches and teammates feel a different kind of way.

i'm going with them... 🤷‍♂️

I hear ya.

Pike said the team did not pick captains this year. And this was a bad choice by pike.

The issue is not just Jwill, although he is the most glaring because of his antics. But this team was lacking and void of true leadership. Pike picked Jwill and martini to be captains mostly because they were the elder statesmen. He alluded to that in an early season interview. He obviously expected more. But the roster construction was awful.

That's fair. I can't argue how good of a captain he was just like I wouldn't argue whether he should have been one. It's definitely possible it was only because elder statesmen and he didn't do as good of a job as they wanted.

I think my overarching theme is even though the team was a massive disappointment I still would like to see guys return. This program NEEDS kids to play here 3 and 4 years, because we can't outspend people in the portal. I'm for sure not saying I want JWill back to be the starting point guard and play 30 minutes a game and take crunch time shots. I'm saying if the price is right NIL wise bring back the guy for year 3 and spend money on getting that jacob young/cam spencer type impact transfer and let's get to work. He can certainly be a guy you bring in for energy, for full court pressure on defense, to handle the ball when your primary ball handler needs his rest.

Yea I’m also not for running people off after one year. But he has been in the program for 3 years (sat out one). And I don’t see progression as a player and I can’t stand his antics. I would take my chances with others.

I have mentioned I sit behind the bench multiple times a year. And he is not what I would want in my huddle or on my bench.

I don't think we should run anyone off. The questions should be "how much priority do we put on keeping this person?" I don't think JWill should be a high priority (i.e. we should not allocate him a lot of NIL or refrain from recruiting over him) but if he wants to stay he should have a spot on the roster.

Great discussion! Thank you, especially to the two posters who provided such intelligent back-and-forth.

IMO JWill is every coach's nightmare.

Watching him lead the defensive charge in the second half that "almost" brought us the win makes you drool at his potential to be a true leader. How do you reconcile the fact that the fight seems to be there, but he just doesn't care?

The opportunity is there for him to show exceptional leadership, but he chokes away the win twice.

I assume Pike named him Captain because he thought he would mature into the role and understand how the leadership role was right there for the taking.

All the potential in the world, and he doesn't seem to even be aware of the importance. Redundant, I know.

You guys all wanted Simpson gone.

You know what he could do? Hit foul shots.

68% JWill at end of game or 88% Simpson?

Be careful what you wish for and I told you so.

Derkack missing foul shots at Kennesaw?
I would have liked Simpson shooting.

SMH
Mrs. Simpson, you're still responding on this board? Geez, isnt it time to move on?!

Simpson, Derkack. Both horrendous shooters.... but at least Dercack got to the line. Have a nice day.

Jwill can take his Ice skates and JMike and slide to Rider or St Peter’s. We need true Power 4 talent and they are not that. Yes we can all point to 4-5 games in the season where they look ok to good. It’s the other 25 games + it’s a problem.

Neither are PG’s and neither can shoot well enough to be legit 2’s.

If Pike was disciplined and didn’t have favoritism then maybe keep one for 8-12 min a game based on matchup

Right now we have 3 point guards on next season’s roster. Unless one leaves, I cannot see us bringing in a fourth point.

We have one “shooting “ guard in a freshman Powers. And one”wing” in Derkack.

The rest of the roster are not perimeter defenders, or ball handlers.

3 PG’s where?

JWill, JMike, Lino Mark
Ok so Lino Mark incoming freshman! I apologize i thought you meant on the current roster.

Optimistic on Lino! Undersized explosive and very fast with the ball.

I do cautiously like his potential and hopefully he picks up the defensive schemes quickly.

The other 2 are not PG’s at this level and will hopefully transfer .

There is definitely a role for JMike on next year’s team and I really hope he stays. Playing 18 minutes/game he had the 2nd highest Assist/Turnover rate in the B1G at 3.44. (the only guy ahead of him played only 10 minutes/game). He started the season shooting poorly, but improved his shooting as the season progressed. Finished at 33.3% from three, 37% overall, and 65% on free throws. JMike obviously knows the system and is a steady/efficient player handling the ball and distributing. He does need to be more selective when driving to the hoop and getting amongst the trees. And he plays very good defense on the perimeter and on the press.

he isnt fine and you know it. in fact he probably provides less than Hyatt...he provides zero leadership as well and time and time again will make the wrong play

I’m here. Good kid, good effort. Horrible decision making and I don’t want the lone senior leader of a young team laughing and joking in crunch time. I think at one point, Dylan was like shaking his head at him, like dude, stop.

Watching the body language coming off the court, you could tell Dylan was crushed.

I like JMike as a leader - retain him for culture and continuity. Actually thought we had some success with him bringing the ball up the court.

You want Dercack to keep the line open with his younger brother. And think Dercack will improve in year 2.
